#GlenCampbell is an American rock and country music singer, guitarist, songwriter, television host, and actor. Most people know him as a singer and aren't aware of what an influential guitar player he was. I have compiled examples of Glens playing through the years to show how this guitar legend developed through his early days in the 60s to the 2000s. I hope you find some inspiration in this, and please feel free to like and share.

Glen Campbell. Jerry Reed. Roy Clark. If you're a guitar player and you don't know these men, *get* to know them...three of the great players, regardless of genre. RIP

These guys were phenomenal players, I never knew how good Glen Campbell was until I saw him as a guest on daytime tv.

He just might have been the first "non-rock" guitarist I ever saw regularly. My dad liked country music and watched "Hee Haw" every week. I actually thought that Jerry and Glen were "just" actors at first. I was young...and rather "dense" 😵
@@tonyjones1560 I think many of us were "dense" when younger. I know I was. I didn't recognize the talent of many of these people until the internet came along. Roy was able to play a multitude of instruments and in that regard he is head and shoulders above just about anyone. Chet plays a mean guitar also. And "best ever" is indeed an almost impossible question. I have been awe struck by Roy for many years, and now Im even moreso by Glen. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question!

That would mean so much coming from him, as a huge Glen fan I feel he doesn't get NEARLY enough recognition for his amazing work, although of course that's just the mass public, I know that anyone who's really in the country music industry respects Glen Campbell massively, or at least I'd really hope so...

It's a load of bull is what it is! Also, yeah, Glen had too much talent for any mortal man... and he used it amazingly too... I love you Glen, you are and always will be in my heart. No matter what everyone in my real life says about your music, I love it.
Telling you right now, playing that clear and precise on a 12 string acoustic is brutal stuff. Glen is the definition of a musical legend.
Well I guess it's time to finally recognize the fact that Glenn Campbell was indeed one of the greatest masters of guitar EVER. Not just capable of the technical aspects of great speed and accuracy but tasteful and inventive. He makes the most complex runs look easy and natural. The guy was incredible.

Definitely, he’s one of the few on top of the thing called music. Right there with Bach, Bird, Chick Corea, Jaco, Stevie Wonder, the best of the best and brightest. Flawless singer to boot. Physically gifted plus genius is a nice combination to have, wish I had either lol.

Seriously I had no frickin idea how great his guitar playing was. Usually you only saw him singing a hit song. Now I look at him in a different light. He was and is great.
he also sang high harmony on tour with the beach boys, and all the guitar in any beach boys song is Glen. Watch "The Wrecking Crew" if you haven't seen it.

Short Story but really is True; I Started taking guitar lessons in Albuquerque, New Mexico when I was about 9 yrs old....the school was co owned by a local TV personality named Dick Bills who also was part owner or the NBC affiliate and also owned or part owner of a local night club. Well when I was in 5th grade in Nov 1965 I walked into the lesson the evening before Thanksgiving and they told me I was going to have a substitute teacher. It turned out to be Glen I actually had him for three weeks. He told me he had just come off the road touring with the Beach boys
The school performed a Christmas songs (mostly Accordian students) but Apparently Glen was Mr Bills Nephew which I knew nothing about but Glen taught me three songs two for the show and one for my first lesson. Believe it or not I've got a Kalamazoo Gibson guitar that Kalamazoo gave to Carl Wilson as a Demo who in turn gave it to Glen and Glen ended up giving it to me... Still play it once in a while
Great story and awesome souvenir! Wow!! Van Halen wished he could have had some lessons with Glen - and that was after Van Halen already hit the big time. You got lessons form the very best - a brilliant player and super nice guy. Lucky you! Take care of that guitar. :)

To those who didn't know what an amazing guitarist Glen was - he started out professionally as a guitar session player with The Wrecking Crew. The Wrecking Crew was a legendary group of musicians who were engaged to play on generally - other peoples' recordings. The singing came later. He was renowned in the music industry for his guitar skills before the singing ever got hot for him.
Wow never knew he was on the wrecking crew. Thanks. Amazing stuff. He's been one of my favorites since I was a kid and found a really cool album set my dad had of his. They were all color coded country and western albums. Man I'd love to have them now.
Prince knew the music industry so well and had tons of influence in it. When someone asked him who he believed the best guitarist ever was..he said Glen Campbell without hesitation. That says alot.
When people talk about the greatest guitarists of all time you hear Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, etc, but Glen Campbell really needs to be included in that exclusive group.

And Roy Clark. These two never get mentioned, but they were accurate and insane on the guitar if they wanted to be.
Both Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix were sloppy as hell live. A lot of the country pickers would run circles around them. And since the late 70s there's been dozens of guitarists that neither one of them could hold a candle too. Some aren't even all that well known in the general public. Gary Moore for one, I could make an entire list but it would take hours lol.

This man was so talented, yet so underrated and actually mocked by the hipsters of the 60s and 70s. But when you see what he was capable of, as a player and a singer, he put most of his rock and pop contemporaries to shame. R.I.P. Glen!🙏✝️❤️
When Eddie Van Halen asks for lessons from Glen Campbell you know he must be something special
It’s hard to say anybody is the absolute best because of all the genres (classical, flamenco, jazz, r&b, country, swing, rock and so on), but overall as a guitarist myself for going on 60 years, I’d have to say he is AMONG the best in any genre he ever attempted. The boy could pick.

Agreed. There is never a 'best', but there are many 'greats' and it's a marvel to live in an age where they not only all played, but we have such access to their music.
check out Jack Pearson. he played briefly with Allman Bros. in the late 90s alongside Dickey. he was doing Duane's slide parts, so obviously he's incredible on slide. he can also hang with straight up world class jazz cats AND also can hang with Tommy Emmanuel on acoustic gypsy Django stuff.

The solo at 4.41 was when Glen was in advanced illness - the man was incredibly gifted. A real artist.
No doubt about it. Even in the advanced stages of dementia he could play the sh!t out of a guitar. I'm still trying to figure out a can opener.

when I was a kid My Grandpa said " someday you'll play guitar like Glen Campbell. I was thinking ( no. I want to play like Jimmy Page!). Grandpa knew what he was talking about!

Interestingly enough, both Campbell and Page were session players before they became famous. Session players have to be able to play anything, play it quickly and play it well.

My father had an LP of his in the early 70’s I think I wore the groves out in it.
I only found out since he died how incredible he was on the guitar.I am no expert but in my opinion he is the best I have heard.Thankfully there is CZcams.

Just discovered that he was this amazing guitar player today, totally by accident. All my memories were of listening to Rhinestone Cowboy on the radio as a kid, had no idea what a talent he was.
I've been playing professionally for more than 40 years and I can't get anywhere near the talent and skills this guy possessed. He was one of a kind for sure.

My favorite Glen Campbell story - he didn't read music as a studio musician with the Wrecking Crew, but he had a great ear. Carol Kay on bass said they would give them a new tune to record and Glen would whisper to her - "Hey Carol, how does this go?" She'd quickly show him and then he would kill it for the record.
When he was reminiscing with members of The Wrecking Crew, he said, "I can hardly read a cmic book, let alone read music".....
I heard him say he could follow the studio lead sheet chord changes but not notation ie riffs and melody lines. In any case he had a great ear, sense of time, and eighth note picking technique.
He once said I can read a little music , but not enough to get in the way of my guitar picking !

That is incorrect.
Fender improperly named the feature Vibrato as that is actual shifting of the pitch of the note. Most amps had tremolo which is volume swelling.
A simple search will find that many Fender (Vox, Magnatone and others as well) amps had not only reverb but tremolo as well in the 60's.
Some were better than others depending on the method of producing the 'effect'.

Used to watch the Glen Campbell Show back in the day. The whole family would watch it. I used to watch his fingers carefully and wonder "how does he do it"? He was GREAT!
Despite his recent passing, Glen Campbell will live forever!
If there is a hereafter, as I believe, his "beautiful noise" should secure forgiveness for whatever transgressions he may have done. Perhaps we shall be re-entertained, in a not so distant time, by all new music from so may past greats.
His daughter, Ashley, has a lot of his talents, too. She is amazing. She and her father were very close.

I'm in my 50's and looking to start playing believe it or not and am just hooked on this guy right now. Man he was friggin good.

To be honest, I was born in the 70s in the UK and I only really knew his two or three famous tunes and always thought of him as just some old C&W singer from the old days, but since he passed I have been on CZcams for hours being hugely entertained (love his duets with say Johnny Cash, Stevie Wonder, etc).
This compilation is fantastic, and Glenn is Fantastic. Thank you and Rest In Peace.
DAMN!!!! Glen could play!!!! It looks like he mixed elements of jazz and country, and made his own sound. But he could play rock, blues, or just about anything he wanted. It's no wonder Eddie Van Halen asked Glen's friend Alice Cooper, if he could get him "guitar lessons with Glen."

4:31 he's smack in the midst of Alzheimer's and it's as good - or better - than any of the other solos in this collection. What an amazing talent - the guitar was part of his soul.
That is amazing and intriguing to me. I know that Alzheimer’s affects short term memory. Maybe the muscle memory is so strong that he could continue playing. I wonder if he could have learned a new song and retained the chord changes and words? His Austin City Limits concert was amazing as well

He was one hell of a guitarist. In fact many of today's greatest guitarists would say that he is one of the greatest. Right up there with Chet Atkins B.B. King Roy Clark Eric Clapton etc.

Hate to say it, but better than Chet Atkins and Roy Clark. Not sure that you can compare Eric and BB King…styles too different. BUt I would put him up there with George Benson whom I think is one of the best of all times.

Holy cow, that guy was a scary clean picker. Impeccable technique. I had absolutely *no idea* the dude from "True Grit" could play like *that* . The stuff from 2:13 is *extraordinarily* difficult to play. Another GC fan has just been born...
Pure Talent. You can tell he was a great session player he doesn't miss one pick ever. His work on so many records unfortunately has been lost. He couldn't even name the songs he played on. Life of a great session player. And he could sing. And entertain. God bless him.

I had the great good fortune to see Les Paul do one of his Monday night gigs at Fat Tuesday’s in NYC. Capacity: Around 250. Amped, but at just the right level. Crystal clear, so you could hear all the licks perfectly. Proving you don’t have to be loud to impress people with your playing. FYI, he sat at the door afterwards and thanked every guest for coming. I got his autograph and he couldn’t have been more gracious. That’s class. Glen’s playing reminds me of that show. His playing was so fluid and the licks so tasty. Yeah, his big singles were (perhaps) overproduced, but they are beautiful songs. Wichita Lineman is perfect.
His solos and runs had a great relevance to what was been played..He had an ear that was second to none and could structure on the fly. Any budding guitarist could learn so much from his videos alone, I certainly do on a constant basis. Glen Campbell was a great man in every respect.

Glen is undoubtedly one of the Best guitarists in the world. He will remain so....He is missed and Loved! I had the awesome opportunity to appear on stage with Glen many years ago in Delight, Ark (his home town). Glen has always been a great musical influence in my life.

Chris H. Yeah. I have an immense dislike concerning country music. Glen transcended that genre. He played and toured with the beach boys, played as a session guitarist with Sinatra. The song you mentioned, Wichita Lineman is not country in my opinion. Just Americana. It's a beautiful song. I've watched several live versions and he played different solos each time. All of them brilliant. The mere fact that you like Wichita Lineman speaks to your taste in music. You couldn't have picked a better tune. This coming from a British man that likes little American music. Elvis obviously was unbelievable, same with Sinatra, Glen with Wichita Lineman alone belongs in the upper echelons of Americana tupe music.
My Dad and I talk about Country and Western music all the time, we were talking about the Jimmy Webb/Glen Cambpell string of songs, I said to him, the sad thing is, most people won't realise the fact that he was one of the most talented guitarists ever, a true showman, I enjoyed the video, Thank You, and I'm sharing it with my Dad now, and the fact that when The Beatles hit America, Mr. Campbell was the #1 seller of records that year.
I have been obsessing over him. I am smitten and he is darling at every age, as a 17 y/o in 1971 I thought he was a country folk singer and now 65 I'm knowing him and shocked I missed him. I did see him play golf at celebrity golf tournaments in Palm Springs. I started because of the alzheimers (my father) and have been here for days. Glen, what a gift!

Damn ! Being a rock fan for years, I have to admit his skill level is above and beyond that of well known guitar heroes, imagine, what he could do with distortion ? The guys speed and timing and scale knowledge as well as his feel was top level + genius AAA+++
Kevin Leavy.. He certainly had a gift. It's no surprise that bands such as Stone Temple Pilots and Guns&Roses covered Wichita Lineman. Guns&Roses played Wichita Lineman at just about every gig in the past few years. I've watched the CZcams clips of them performing it. They don't come close to doing it as majestically a Glen obviously, but the respect they have for him is obvious and a lovely gesture.
@@brettanderson7832 Wichita Lineman, that Jimmy Webb gem, is such an awesome song. It has my all time favorite lyric in it "I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time". Glenn made it a hit and it'll be his song forever. And as Kevin stated Glenn's guitar skills were off the charts and to think he couldn't read music, just amazing talent.

Not that cheap is necessarily bad, but if you can't make a bad guitar sound good, then you can't play.
I've seen pictures of him with that Teisco in the studio with the Wrecking Crew. Just think, it might be the rhythm guitar in the background of Strangers In The Night.

It blew my mind, when I heard that some rock guitar legends - guitar gods, essentially worshiped Glen Campbell. I was like, "WHAT? That guy from "Hee Haw"?" So I checked out his playing and was amazed. Thank you for putting together this compilation.

Glen's guitar playing somehow got lost in the shuffle of the GoodTime Hour and his commercial success in the early 70s. This is proof he was one of the greatest musicians of all time.
Taco Gillespie The same type of thing happened to Roy Clark. It’s a shame that these guys get overlooked. I did too, but I stumbled upon these videos and was absolutely blown away. I’m not a country fan, but I could listen to Glen play the guitar all day.

Amazing talent. Multiple instruments. So much musical history in one man. His good friend Alice Cooper, said Eddie Van Halen asked if he could arrange a guitar lesson/ sessionwith Glen. That's how great he was. Awesome.
