In rural Isaan its not anything to do with wealth. They are all lovers of living off the land and very proud of it. If in the city and they return home they cant wait to get out on the land to find whats going for the menu during that season. Even if they build a new house many will still cook outside kitchen and sit outside on the mat when eating and prefer to sleep on the floor. Lizards, frogs to catfish rice paddy crabs, fish and snails and field mice and rats some snakes and small birds and many many tree leaves and small plants This week I caught a field rat in my fish dam after heavy rain and it was snapped up pretty quickly with smiles . Laap ngu. spicy minced rat and sticky rice a common delicacy. It is a way to supplement income selling in the market but its nearly all seasonal. Extended families never starve.
Thanks for taking us along on this adventure Ryan, Damo and Otis. I always find going into the jungle exciting. My wife loves nothing more than to go into the jungle foraging, or as she calls it "hunting" mainly for mushrooms. She is a real Isaan woman and has a nose for what is good and what is not. Whilst she is hunting mushrooms, I am busy looking at all the different species of insects, arachnids and other fauna scuttling around in the undergrowth. Orapan usually comes home with a full basket of goodies! God bless you all 😀❤🙏

The 'Honey Mushrooms' you found are a type of Bolete (maybe Boletellus species). It a reference to the honeycomb-like structure on the bottom of the cap. I miss foraging a bit. Used to live up North. Now in the suburban sprawl of BKK. Nice video. The hard ones near the end are Astraeus hygrometricus. The other 'honey' mushroom is Boletus colossus. The bitter (komb) honey ones are the genus Tylopilus. The dried ones in a bag are Lentinus polychrous. They are farmed too, but also escape into the local jungle. Thanks for taking me back to the jungle :)

My father was good at digging for Cockchafer (แมงกีนูน) in those jungle. That's my childhood life I remembered.
I really enjoyed this episode. This is a bit different but incredibly interesting. A walk through the jungle can be very educational and can be a bit dangerous, but that is educational as well. I would encourage you to do more of these little trips close to home. I am looking forward to seeing you in northern Thailand next month.

In Australia,I used to go out with the indigenous people and collect amazing things in the bush.
Limes ,peppers,mushrooms,yams,many things that you would walk past not knowing they are edible,,and very bloody tasty.

wow, this is straight up my alley. reminds me of when my family home as a child backed onto the bush here in sydney and my mother and i would walk in and forage for mushrooms and herbs to make soups. little bit more of a snake problem here but i love these sort of bushwalks. awesome video

This is the Khorat Plateau, so it's a bit drier than the western and southern parts of Thailand. It's more like savannah or scrub, not the thick Dipterocarp rain forests you find in wetter places. Incidentally, the University where I work has a mushroom research group, I wonder if they have gotten into Lion's Mane yet. Last I talked to them they were experimenting with Chinese medicinal mushrooms (Ling Zhi etc.).
We would love to connect with people researching mushrooms at your University. I believe mushroom research is starting to be pushed forward at University's now. Were you able to connect with anyone and see if they are doing any research on Lion's Mane?
Very interesting episode. Near our home in Chonburi the Kuhn Yi's pick kaffer lime leaves that grow wild in open fields to make Thai pla curry with. My wife's favorite.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, I used to get honey off of the trees with a coconut smoldering husk and a machete. My favorite plant/food was a vine green I remember as "doi-dang" that was like a cucumber plant with Roma tomato-like fruit. We made a soup with it and ground meat and spices. Bamboo shoots was a favorite!!! Not a big fan of insects and worms...they're there!!!

Reminds of a few years back, when I loaded up the Yais in the truck and took them out to the forest around Phanum Rung 3-4 times a year for foraging. I would fish at the lake close by while they foraged. Always a great meal afterwards. Can’t beat nam prit with fresh vegetables from the forest. ❤

I was researching Ancor wat at one time , it is a giant temple in the middle of the jungle , as they researched the area they discovered that the whole jungle used to be agricultural land with a network of irrigation canals farms and houses , so it makes sense that the jungle is overgrown with edible plants, but you need to be careful you don’t fall in a canal and get hurt
Interesting video. When picking mushrooms, I was told by an expert to always snip the mushroom and not pull out the mycelium which is akin to just picking the fruit and not the whole plant. This way it can propagate again. Any experts mushroomers out there agree or disagree?
Yes that’s correct, cut at the base so the mycelium can fruit again 🙏
I will have to go and search the local forest for mushrooms, but I'm always looking up for birds mostly. My girlfriend gets hangry sometimes, but luckily there is always food around every corner in town 😅

There’s a village “community forest/ jungle” 1km from my house which I take my morning walks to with my dog. Supposedly no one is to cut down the trees but locals will take fallen branches for firewood. During dry season they’ll start fires ( leaving them unattended) which is to help the mushrooms grow ( and adds to the haze during this season). People will go there scavenge around for ant nests ( eggs) and certain roots and leaves. Unfortunately many Isaan people are superstitious about the forest thinking there are ghosts roaming about so don’t seem to have interest in taking care of this oasis of greenery. All the wild animals like have been poached except for a couple squirrels. Sadly the locals are too lazy to dump their construction debris or other garbage in a proper dump yard so dump it along the one dirt lane that goes through the community forest. ( no shame)
Seeing how the forest can provide food and medicine makes me wonder how much of this knowledge was lost generations ago in the Western world.
Can you grow ginger in Thailand & how valuable is it?
We have ginger on the farm in Borabue, Maha Sarakham. It's not an expensive item if you have to buy it, so not much money in growing it. It is more of an offset garden item.

My parents used to forage for shiitake mushrooms in the woods outside of Seattle. In Thailand I would be fearful of poisonous snakes.
I've had a few encounters with Cobra's foraging for Mushrooms ... Nearly had a heart attack and ended up taking a few months off before getting the courage to go back.
You can grow from cuttings and still not that the plant out.
I must say I was a bit disappointed with your haul of forage from your local jungle.We get more here in Germany.
