How can we be sure that this style of dance was the one in use during the Baroque age? There are no films or videos from that era. Yet we can be sure that in the seventeenth century it really was danced like this. Artistic sensitivity, musical knowledge and pictorial culture allow us to overcome the temporal distance that separates us from those centuries. Bravo!

One never knows what to do with the hands . All the notations are silent on the subject. Mr. Benne seems to have solved the problem nicely: he has tasteful and graceful movements of his shoulders down to his fingertips. Merci pour votre dance, monsieur benne.
Are they silent for this piece or for the genre in general. I have impression there were hands notated performing opening circles on other pieces? Forgive my ignorance.
Genre in general. In the Feuillet and Pecour notations, there are not even arm hints. Yours is not a silly question.
william jackson Thanks so much! And I’ll look up these notations. My vague impression was that people from the era described them as opening gestures. If they may be like the musical agréments then they should be inserted in a deliberate rhythmic structure, forming a “pattern”, sometimes on strong beat, other times syncopated...I find this style has so much grace, and unlike many other things that have been “codified”, it lacks rigidity, on the contrary very light and fluid! More like the music than the trimmed gardens 😀

Il est faux, cher Monsieur William Jackson, de dire que les bras n'existent pas dans les textes de belle dance. Pierre Rameau dans le Maitre à danser, pour le style français, suivi par les textes anglais, allemands, italiens, espagnols, portugais, etc… décrit un système de bras qui aident l'élan des pas, le naturel de l'équilibre, l'élévation "obligée" de cette époque. Il y a des ronds - de - poignets très sensés, sur les pas de côté, et un système d'opposition aux pas, appelés ronds - du - coude qui vont en avant et en arrière, et des passages de bras entre les deux sortes , et bien d'autres choses en fonction de chaque pas. Ce système, magnifique et réfléchi, très organique, n'est pas utilisé par Béatrice Massin et ses émules : c'est leur droit masi il faut dire ce que l'on fait. Et l'on ne peut soutenir que cela n'existe pas. Peut-être ne le connait-on pas… C. Bayle, chorégraphe, danseuse.

No offense, but this video makes it obvious why baroque music has survived far more than baroque dance. :-)
davehshs : why do you think that watching this video? We’re now doing a lot of new works based on Baroc Dance witch is like an alma matter for dancers! It’s a really important part of our legacy!
@@compagniebeauxchamps As one who has enjoyed much of ballet for years, I was unaware of this "legacy," not having studied the history of dance.
I love much baroque music, but frankly find this form of dance effete and uninteresting.
Keep in mind that, like most aesthetic preferences, my opinion is strictly subjective. However, you must be aware that baroque dance is hardly performed publicly at all, unlike baroque music.
