Ripley - Single Point Perspective & Wides - Cinematography Breakdown

  • The use of wide shots that hold for a relatively long time is prevalent throughout Ripley.
    Giving the audience time to look around and soak up the environment, in a way like the characters could be doing at that moment.
    These are often but not always single point perspective shots. Where if extended all the lines would unify into a single vanishing point, sometimes this is broken up by the background, and at other times is fractured by more organic shapes in shot.
    When dealing with shots this wide, in black and white, extra care has to be given to guiding the audiences eye to the characters. Though still allowing them the freedom to look around and learn something about the world.

    I love the long, lingering wide shots, and the fact that the vast majority of the series is shot locked off. For me it made the series feel more indulgent and absorbing while also often adding to the tension and drama. It seems a rare approach these days, and is all the more refreshing for it IMO ;-) Thanks for the breakdown Dale!
