Zhiyun B500 Bi-Colour LED Light - Review
The new ‘B’ Series from Zhiyun takes a different approach from most other higher output COB leds on the the market at the moment.
Combining everything into the Lamp head, therefore requiring no ballast and no proprietary header cable.

There are three conspicuous fans on the sides and back of the unit, combined with generous vents on the top and bottom.
The whole series is bi-colour, and given the change to a lamp head only form factor you now have the optional H1 controller.
And of course you can still use the ZY Vega app to control the light via Bluetooth along with any of Zhiyuns other compatible lights.
The ZY Vega app has received an update and is now has the option of an rotated iPad mode, which is great as I usually find myself opting for an iPad to control various bits of equipment on shoots.
The shell of the light is a bit more plastic feeling than the previous MOLUS G300, probably a measure to keep weight down. So this likely wouldn’t make it onto a rental houses lighting truck, but if you’re taking care it shouldn’t be a problem.

This is a relatively straight forward process! Having said that there is a risk of damaging your camera so proceed with caution at your own risk!!! Apologies for the preamble, sometimes I like to have a chat and give context… Basically by removing 4 screws within the lens mount you are able to remove the IR cut filter that sits in front of of the cameras sensor. At that point you allow your cam...

The use of wide shots that hold for a relatively long time is prevalent throughout Ripley. Came for a review, stayed for lighting tutorial 🔥🔥
🙌
Only review with actual experience in using for a paid job and comparing to g300 at max power thank you.
I might do a short comparing the output on both…
your mirror imaged top down video sure does make it confusing to see you turning screws clockwise to remove them.
Interesting. I was under the impression that the 4k didn't have an IR cut filter, hence the IR pollution that was often present in the shadows with the 4K, particularly when using NDs. I was careful to specifically get ND filters with IR cut buit-in. I suppose it was because they just didn't use a very good IR cut filter.
Basically that’s it, a lot of Blackmagic cameras have leaned towards having an IR cut filter that lets through more Infrared than a lot of other manufacturers cameras. But trust me running it with no IR cut at all is wayyyy more intense 😅
Hi i read somewhere that in Dune they replaced the IR filter with a visible light filter.
Absolutely! So at 16:38 I mention the one I’m using. You have a choice when modding as you could fit a filter for visible light back over the sensor. I opted not to as you can also just put one on the lens. This allows you to choose which filtration you want to use / experiment more easily as there are many different ‘sensitivities’ of filtration measured in nanometers.
beuatiful mustache :D
Thanks ☺️

Hey, not sure I understand correctly, this was the G300. Did you mean the B500?
my eyes are so tired I thought your hand was floating and grew big I thought you were going to grab me
Maybe it has 👋
I love the long, lingering wide shots, and the fact that the vast majority of the series is shot locked off. For me it made the series feel more indulgent and absorbing while also often adding to the tension and drama. It seems a rare approach these days, and is all the more refreshing for it IMO ;-) Thanks for the breakdown Dale!
I got drawn into this series, and reflect that for me, many of these compositions add to the sense of uneasiness, augmenting suspense. Agreed about the grade and sharpness, though I still thoroughly enjoyed Ripley. Thanks for the breakdown Dale.
It would be fascinating to see a version in colour, just for comparisons sake!
@@Dale_Campbell you read my mind! In fact I’ve planned a test shoot tomorrow to play with B&W and colour versions. That said I like the choice of B&W for this series, albeit its lack of texture and grain, and the highlights are sometimes very white.
Great show. Great Cinematography. Great Commentary.
You question, would I get one of these. I'm now thinking to getting the URSA Cine 12K for that 16 stops of DR. It may be as high as 14 at an SNR of 2. This is equal to the old Arri Alexa amd Ameira. ut still less than to awesome Alexa 35. But curiously t may be above the Red VRaptorVV sensor's DR of 13.5 at an SNR of 2. Then have the PYXIS as a B cam. These will fit with my current canon cn-e full frame Lenses. I'm interested in seeing how much DR Cine D will achieve. I suspect 14 stops at an SNR of 2.
Dale your spoton right saying that second screen on the new Ursa Cine 12K not making sense. Mostly because the camera moves. Dose BMD think we're going to strap the AC to the camera or something crazy like that. It's been many decades since the AC has pulled focus remotely. I don't think anybody will be returning to the 50's using static camera shot because the AC is attached to the lens. I think have a more comprehensive amount of in and out sockets similar to the Alexa 35 would be a better use of the camera real estate than the second screen.
@11:00, do you think they relied heavily on actual sunlight, or did they use an extra light to shine through the window? @15:45, If you looked at that scene w/ a scope in a video editor, would that hot light be above the 100% limit? @26:15 - Beautiful bokeh! @34:35, By putting a brighter light near the inspector, in real life that might have further blinded him from seeing crucial details on Ripley's face!
Is part of the aesthetic w/ light done w/ hard light? Because it doesn't seem soft to me in some scenes. Also, I'm wondering why they chose to do it in B&W. What did that B&W do that color can't do? BTW, lighting also seemed quite natural, especially on indoor scenes.
Another comment - It felt like an homage to film noir, almost as if the director thought of that genre as the best quality and wanted to emulate it. Certainly, B&W requires expert lighting. And the fact that there weren't digital effects and such brought out the story so much more.
I always enjoy your commentary and shot breakdown. Maybe, someday, you could look at the tv series "The patriot". It is somewhat particular, yet calming.
Thanks for sharing this! Do you know if it has picture cache pre-record ?
Hmmm I don’t think any previous Blackmagic cameras have, so I’d be inclined to say not…
@@Dale_Campbell Many people requested it from them so i thought they would consider it in their flagship camera. Nothing on the website mentions it. Hopefully with a firmware update it might be possible. That would make it a camera from heaven for wildlife filmmakers!
Have you tried balancing it vertically?
I haven’t yet… will try this afternoon and report back…. I fear it may be too tall…

@@Dale_Campbell lovely!
I'm completely captivated by Ripley, and this analysis, coupled with the frames in frames breakdown, has truly heightened my fascination to boundless levels! 🤯 I eagerly anticipate more videos like this on Ripley. I'm thoroughly enjoying the depth of reflection!
Such a superb example of film as a true visual medium. The Rhetoric of Film. is alive and well, in "Ripley". Kubrick would have loved it.
I wonder if they will leave it at this, or try and adapt the later Ripley books…
@@Dale_Campbell Our sense of sight wants more!
I agree. Only a genius could make a film like this in the digital age.
You profess the know the thoughts and feelings of Stanley Kubrick....?? Not only arrogant, and presumptive, but desperately trying to sound clever and knowledgeable by dropping the well known name Kubrick. Perhaps Toland would've enjoyed the homage, but there's zero Kubrick influence here....Your comment is frankly moronic.
Why did you skip the most pronounced use of the catchlight wherein the scene that Ripley is watching Mina sing "Il cielo in una stanza"?
Fair! When I first started doing the analysis I was only using shots from the trailer to avoid spoilers etc. I did expand that out but didn’t go looking comprehensively on this topic as I’d already recorded this episode.
I think in the scene where Tom is ascending the stairs, the smallest frame is a Caravaggio homage. Same for the Marge in a bathtub scene.
Now its personal!.. :}
was really close to buying a Nanlite F300B, but being able to just put this on a backpack and needing less gear to actually position them is very appealing.
What kinds of shoot are you doing mostly?
@@Dale_Campbell mostly commercial, documentary and corporate. I would absolutely love something in the 500-600w range that can overpower the sun or fake a sunny day, but it's not a problem I have often to justify buying instead of renting. Also I love putting these lights on Super Clamps.
As solo filmmakers we could take some shots to recreate Ripleys style (with budget gear). We need stylish actors and good location, after knowing the secrets of lighting😊
Less is more! Well done!
🙌
I would love an analysis of Caravaggio's influences on the series, I find it fascinating how everything related to his person, his art and his painting and composition techniques are influenced in the series, an analysis like this would be a bomb, greetings from Paraguay
I was planning one more on black and white cinematography, but a Caravaggio analysis is a great idea 🤔
I would want something like this for corporate interviews battling sun lit windows. So just wondering what your thoughts are for this in a typical setting, ie. person sitting at a board room table with the light at max setting. Space is not too cramped, I tend to keep the light probably like 4-6 feet away. Do you think you'd hear the fan in the audio?
I’ve shot a lot of scenarios like this and competing with direct sun is brutal. I’d say you need at least 600w of output and although this can get close the max mode does spin the fans up. They did announce a new ‘B’ series of lights which may be more suitable but I haven’t used them yet.
THANKS MAN! THIS IS THE VIDEO WE NEED TO WATCH, REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE;) Cheers from South America!
🙌 thanks glad you liked it!
you can adjust the full range of colour temp in max mode as well?
You can, but I imagine as with other bi-colour lights the intensity marginally drops as you move away from the ideal range where it is using all of the emitters. But this is to be expected. It does however still feel ‘boosted’ so anecdotally I don’t feel I’m loosing much.
@@Dale_Campbell tyvm for your response! very insterested in this one for the form factor!
I believe it's only 4300 in the max mode .
The compositions I find intriguing in this series, but the hyper sharpness and brilliant whites turn me off. My eye wants to see this as a film on celluloid and I literally got out of my chair while watching the first episode to figure out what was bugging me about the look. And there it was, hyper realistic lens choice, sharpening, and unnaturally white whites. Maybe they think that helps tell the story? Don’t know. All I can say is the grade pulled me right out of the moment and I haven’t watched since.
I had a similar feeling, I suppose I’m used to black & white be played for texture, grain and imperfections a lot of the time. This did have a feel of hyped sharp high resolution photography. My wife thought that maybe it was meant to represent more of how the world feels from Ridley’s perspective, (she didn’t like it). Overall I did find I was too aware of the cinematography in all the different ways I’m looking at in this series of videos to be fully immersed. The last one will be a look at Black & White and a discussion around it.
@@Dale_Campbell It’s like they had a card catalog of classic set-piece compositions from early 20th century European cinema and they tried to shoehorn as many homage versions into the filming as possible. Anyway, always good to know I’m not the only one distracted by the look. Have a fabulous day!
Zhiyun striked again ! How long can you run the light with this anker power station ? Thank you for the vid pal!
I haven’t done a stress test in a controlled way yet. I ran the two lights for over an hour, but I was dancing the levels up and down. At the end it was 50-54% full
im planning on getting two lights, either 2x amaran 300c or these, 2x MOLUS G300 mainly for studio work and weddings as well, which would you recommend ?
Do you need the rgb colour mode?
@@Dale_Campbell I don’t rely on it, I guess it could come in handy but not a necessity
@@DeluxSkater all other things being equal I’d usually opt for more output
This is great! Wow the singer is freaking me out just a little though 😂 But hey, have you run into any difficulties with the ZY Vega app getting confused between the fixtures where after adding a new one a previously paired light stops responding to the app? I couldn’t get the x60 and the x100 fixtures to work in the app at the same time in the same group. Same for the M20C and the g200. It’s weird - they will work in separate groups but not together all at the same time.
Thanks! I haven’t encountered that issue, on this shoot I started everything fresh, Bluetooth reset all the fixtures and then added them all together. I also renamed them to help me quickly work out what was what when needing to adjust levels. Mixing the X60 and G300 in the app didn’t seem to be a problem… was this with the current build of the app? The singer was performing the Queen of the Night aria, as I understand it the character is basically cursing her husband out in the most extreme terms! Telling her daughter to kill him… So thats the ‘intent’ 😮
@@Dale_Campbell I just was able to do a fw update on the G200 and it seems to be operating well on the app now. Just received the G300 and WOW! My travel kit is now those 2 lights plus 2 x100s and 2 Fiveray M20s. All fit in the space of a single 300w type light from Aputure. I do use a ton of Aputure fixtures in the studio or local locations though!
@@wiezyckifamily awesome 🙌 Just working out a packing solution for all of the lights at the moment, what are you using?
@@Dale_Campbell I've been carrying on a Lowepro ProTactic backpack for camera bodies, lenses, laptop, etc. (under the seat) then the PortaBrace rolling carry-on case (overhead) holds batteries, a few lights, gimbal and/or drone (mini pro 3). Then I check a Briggs and Riley Torq 28-inch medium trunk suitcase with lightstands, tripod w/head removed, power bricks for lights, light modifiers and then my clothes go into the top lid portion. If I'm careful I can get it under 50lbs because the suitcase itself is only like 9.5lbs. As far as the actual packing of the lights themselves I've just sorta stacked them together in a couple of the velcro dividers in the PortaBrace. Just FYI I do have to pop the wheels off of that case to fit in the overhead and sometimes it's a bit tight and flight attendants look at me with 'that look.'
I have the G200 and love it. Will definitely pick one of these up soon. Thanks for sharing your experiences, for me, that’s much more useful than just specs
Thanks Matt! Glad to hear the approach was useful for you!
Are the modifier and lightstand clamps metal? The G200's biggest weakness was plastic on the clamps...
The baby pin receiver and articulating mount are metal. The Bowens mount seems to be tough plastic
