    I have 2 homes. Live 1/2 year in one and 1/2 year in the other. Is there a way to program the unit so it knows which mapping to use for each home?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 9 měsíci

      Possibly it would think it's on a new "floor", but most likely (especially if you're moving the base station) you'll just need to let it remap.
      The remapping process really isn't a big deal at all though.

  • @azak4243
    @azak4243 Před 11 měsíci

    Odd question here… I just purchased a new robot vacuum to replace one that died on me. I would like to place the docking station for the new one in a more “hidden” location. I would like to place it under a cabinet (kick plate/trim removed so it can drive in). This would leave 5-6 inches on either side of it. Do you see this as being an issue? I’ve read that most of the manufacturers recommend quite a bit of space on either side of the docking station but your channel and others seem to have them set almost right next to furniture or other docking stations. Do you ever have any issues with the robots getting “lost” trying to return to the dock or being unable to dock? Do you think I’ll run into issues with the docking station in a cabinet? Thanks in advance, great video as usual

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 11 měsíci

      It's hard to say for sure...but in theory you should be okay.
      Manufacturers really play it safe with their recommendations.
      In our testing studio I routinely have robot docks jammed in between sofas, desks, tripods, and studio lighting...in the vast majority of cases the robots have no issue leaving the tighter space and making it back.
      More likely than not you'll be perfectly fine with that setup.

    Awesome review. One variable that’s not considered is longevity which plays into cost effective value. Seems like the Roborock S7MaxV Ultra is the best model overall but how long do you think it will last for?

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 11 měsíci

      Nothing about the build quality of any of Roborock's S series has me overly concerned.
      I expect the battery will last 3'ish years (pretty standard for a robot vacuum).
      I would guess the system should last 8-10 years, provided you keep it well maintained.

    • @arcrides6841
      @arcrides6841 Před 11 měsíci

      If it uses Lithium Ion batteries they should last 5 years at a bare minimum. Usually more depending on the cells, application etc. Many last over 15 years.

    • @clevo4040
      @clevo4040 Před 9 měsíci

      @@ModernCastle I suspect many people would find a master table useful, as it allows individuals to focus on scores that matter most to them, such as pet hair removal. Another suggestion I have is to measure suction as scientifically as possible, which would be greatly beneficial to your viewers. Suction measurements are not readily comparable across different brands and models. For example, Roomba's claims of 10x and 40x suction power, compared to the older 670 model, become meaningless when trying to compare these values with the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra's 6000 Pa.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 9 měsíci +2

      @@clevo4040 Sounds good. We'll make a point to build and publish those Google Sheets this year with every best of video we release.
      As far as measuring suction power...it's something we want to do and we're still working on it. As of yet, we haven't found a reliable way to measure it. I know there are various tools and gauges, but getting those implemented in a way that allows you to measure realistic suction on the actual suction at the floor has been difficult to say that least.
      The few methods we've tested just end up feeling more artificial because of all of the extra sealing that's required to create a consistent process.
      All that to say, we're working on it but I don't have anything that feels worth publishing right now.

  • @Justiceinabarrel
    @Justiceinabarrel Před 8 měsíci +2

    Very informative, but I think when It comes to devices like these, durability and longevity is super important but difficult to test. Any one thing goes bad such as in the dock or the unit itself and then parts also like defective battery, brushes and such. Shuts the whole thing down and you are at a loss. Then you find it may be safer to just get a battery hand vac.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Fair point. In the cases of stuff like batteries, brushes, and filters, those are all expected to go bad over time...you will need to replace almost every major part on any robot vacuum as time goes on. Battery every 2-5 years. Small brushes every 6'ish months. Large brushrolls every 1-2 years.
      As far as the dock itself or the robot going bad, it's possible, though I am far less worried about those parts than I am the battery. Over the years of testing when there is a problem with a robot vacuum not moving / not functioning, in the vast majority of cases it just needs a new battery.

    The problem I have with the S8 ultra is that the Chinese version (G20) is only going for around $700 domestically in China. Works with Xiaomi App instead of the US Roborock app (I believe certain models work with both).
    If you can find a solid Chinese shop, shipping shouldn't be that expensive... ($1000 total?) can save a lot of money with the right research and connections if youre willing to sac the 12 month warranty.

    Thats a very good review. I would like to suggest that you should consider adding two more criteria to those reviews:
    1. Security Updates Support
    2. Reparability
    As from what I was able to find in the web only iRobot guarantees 5 years of security updates which is a important thing in IoT (specially when you have robot recording your whole house and sending this footage to the cloud)
    If it comes down to reparability I only have experience with iRobot which is all modular so getting and replacing parts is very easy (just need Phillips screwdriver). I couldn't find any information then few iFixit guides on some older models from other brands. Once again, when one spends over a grand on a vacuum cleaner it would be great to have it working longer than the warranty period. I have my Roomba 500 since new and replaced the battery few times, one time tyres, and one time front brush engine and it still works flawlessly.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 9 měsíci

      Thanks for the suggestions.
      Regarding security updating support - that's not something I've seen many of these brands really ever discuss. Good to know iRobot is 5 years. In any case, I'll look more into it and see what other information we can find.
      Regarding repairability - the vast majority of robots are similar to Roomba in this way...fronts wheels pop in / out, brushrolls easily slot in / out, side brushes screw in, battery replacement just needs a screw driver, etc. On-going repairability is not only allowed, it's expected, as most of these individual parts are only expected to last anywhere from 6-18 months.

    • @ModernCastle
      @ModernCastle  Před 10 měsíci

      @@tammieperrett17 In our testing, we have found tile floors to be just as easy as hardwood floors are for robot vacuums. Since there are no carpet fibers for dirt / debris to hide it it's really easy for the robot to handle it. Tile / hardwood is without question the easiest floor type for any robot vacuum to handle.
      So I really don't think it'll be an issue for you.

    I have recently bought a Roborock S8. The device is good enough but there is a problem with its wall and obstacle detection system. It cannot detect the low height objects close to walls and doors. For example, low height cornice around walls are not detected and the robot keeps hitting them and makes odd movements. This result in:
    - scraches on the device body and cornice
    - mopping/vacuuming takes longer due to the unnecessary movements
    - higher energy usage
    - dirt trails remain on the floor after mopping
    I contacted Roborock support. They said that this has not been reported by anybody else so they will take no action! These kind of problems can be usually resolved by software/firmware updates. Ofcourse, if they want to fix it.
    As a workaround, I edited the map and draw virtual walls manually around the house. Unfortunatly there is also a stupid limit of 10 for virtual walls! so, could not cover all the walls. Besides, this will not work if the walls are not strait.
