What Salt Lake City's request for an NHL expansion team means for the Arizona Coyotes

- On Wednesday, Smith Entertainment Group, owners of the Utah Jazz, asked the NHL to “initiate an expansion process” to bring the team to the state. They also stated that they have an arena that is ready to house a team. From this, many people ran with the idea that this meant the Coyotes could relocate to Salt Lake City. Craig Morgan addressed these rumors as well as the comments by NHLPA director Marty Walsh regarding the Coyotes' search for a home for a permanent arena.

As a fan, this whole debacle with the Desert Dogs has gone on WAY TOO LONG! It's time to relocate them. It's been Some Time so let's move them. Salt Lake, Houston and Quebec all want them AND HAVE ARENAS TO DO SO. NHL, JUST GET IT DONE, PERIOD!!!
KC also has a ready arena
Go watch your previous videos, you said if we don't have any arena info by the Allstar break you would be concerned....
Tempe still has a landfill that has had nothing done to it.
@@ElmerFudd16 The only dumpster fire that truly exists is that your life exists on this planet. The fact you keep trolling the PHNX Sports CZcams channel and spreading hatred of a team as this one speaks volumes of whom you really are. Keep it up, Ryan Zinnato.
And?
@@lanevalhalla9344 What is your damn point? Looking for a way argue fact somehow into fiction that fits the false narrative about the team?
@@NHLCrazy2007 my damn point is that they should have been moved during the bankruptcy. But this league is run by clowns that know better apparently.

No that name won’t work they should name them salt lake salts or Utah salts
Watching this post as a hockey fan outside your market I hear understandable hope and not a little denial. Having followed the NHL since the 50's and almost losing my home team not so long ago, I think I have at least some limited insight. I want the team to stay. I watch many of your games and enjoy the teams play as well as its devoted fans via Center Ice package. (Love the local coverage). BUT....the current status cannot continue, despite the leagues support.. If they put a shovel in the ground tomorrow, it would take 3 years minimum to complete. The sharks are circling (not San Jose) and it's hard to compete with deep pockets. Unless they let you back in your old digs I fear the worst. Good luck !
What’s your home team
@@Hoovie9596 long suffering Sabres fan. Luckily I remember the good times.
@@johnmcnaught7453 ah yes. I’m from Winnipeg. I saw my beloved Jets leave and thankfully return 15 years later
@@Hoovie9596 congrats on landing Monahan.
I think its simply an inference. You have an ownership group pop up saying they can get a team into their arena immediately while the Coyotes are playing before a couple thousand people, losing a bunch of money and can't put together an arena deal. It doesn't explicitly make the connection but its not hard to connect the dots.
When the Coyotes leave and go to Utah how will everyone at PHNX Sports feel? Look at the bright side you still got the Suns, D Backs and Cardinals.
Yotes are done in AZ. I feel horrible for the fans, they're good hockey fans and the Coyotes are a fun team to watch with, finally, a bright future. But it's gonna be on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Having an NHL team playing in a college arena is a disgrace. Not even a good college arena like the Ralph Engelstad, which seats 12000+, but a tiny one. This team has gone through so much mismanagement, its time to stop the bleeding.
Watching this from afar, I can't help but see the ineptitude of this franchise to get its act together to find a suitable venue. Starting with the acrimonious departure from Glendale, putting all their eggs in one basket in Tempe, and subsequently turning their noses on multiple sites in Mesa, and then pitching a "Hail Mary" in NE PHX almost seems like window dressing at this point. It'd be great for the fans to see this thing settled and they stayed in the valley in perpetuity but I don't think this owner is capable. Alex Murello has spoiled the well there.
Excuse me, explain this unproven claim... "subsequently turning their noses on multiple sites in Mesa". Were you directly involved at the process or are you just running your mouth not knowing a thing about what the team is actually doing in securing a land purchase.
Just a thought...
Salt Lake City gets the Arizona franchise not an expansion team.
The Coyotes get mothballed and yes, give the 5th largest market more time to keep the NHL in Arizona.
I would prefer this option.
When and if the (Coyote) team resolves the arena issue THEN bring in Houton. as a true expansion franchise.
This way Arizona keeps Coyote history, jersey and logo.
I am guessing not probable especially waiving $700 million expansion fee for SLC.or lesser amt for movjng a team while warehousing Coyote legacy.
Thoughts ?
As a person not from AZ. The yokes are gone. The Late Jack Kent Cooke when asked why the Kings could draw fans said. “ there are 700k Canadian living in LA. I just realize that they moved here to get away from hockey.
The citizens of Arizona are never ever going to give money for a hockey arena. The salary cap and floor has doomed them.
And even podcaster can have an agenda
You sound like a fool. You should hear what the actual owner of the Coyotes has to say about relocation.
Gutierrez was on the Burns/Gambo show on 1/6/24 and provided an update on the Arena. I posted the link but CZcams keeps removing it. The NHLPA and Joe Smith could have easily found the information if they wanted it. The Athletic has been slamming the Coyotes ever since Morgan left.
I posted several comments on the Athletic regarding the situation under my name there (Carnac). The Coyotes when asked about the situation should have directed Smith/NHLPA to the radio interview instead of stating no new updates and hanging up them.
The Coyotes need to remember that most people outside the Phoenix area want the Coyotes to move. The court of public opinion outside the area is fading fast.
Move the Coyotes this mess is un fixable. I live in PHX I love hockey but the current owner won’t get a cent of my money and it’s ridiculous to play NHL hockey in a 5,000 seat college arena. Let’s be honest the NEW proposal for a North Phoenix arena is nothing but a stall technique no arena is going to get built. Utah is huge for winter sports, Arizona is not and will never be.
I live in Tucson so i'm a little removed but from where I am it seems obvious the NHL wants to stay in the PHX market but i'm sorry, the scattershot approach to this arena isn't working in the court of public opinion or NHL admin. They need to focus on one location and GO FOR IT.
Coyotes could lose 100 billion dollars and the NHL would still find a way to keep them in Arizona
You guys and reality are miles apart. Who’s going to pay to build the virtual north Phoenix arena? The voters will never approve a sales tax increase to build the Coyotes an arena.
This didnt age well. “Experts”
It is clear that with a proper plan, relocating/expanding to a "non-traditional" market can work. Look at Tampa, Nashville, Dallas, and most recently in Vegas for the most direct example.
Phoenix being granted a team back in 1996 wasn't the issue, it's everything after it - particularly moving all the way out to Glendale rather than finding a more centralized location in Phoenix/Scottsdale/Tempe. The Tempe plan looked good before it got voted down. At this point, I think it's just far too toxic for the NHL to stay in Phoenix. They should bail and look at it again in 10-20 years down the road with a complete fresh start.
Frankly we all know they SHOULD move to Quebec City just as the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg in 2011. Pretty much the identical scenario. But since the division/conference alignment is oh, so important, it looks like Portland (always possible - great market and rink ready), Houston (though for such a huge market the NHL would want the expansion fees to come with it) and most likely Salt Lake City (also ready to accept a team, and a smaller market) are in play.
They should have been gone ten years ago this is ridiculous move the damn team to a city that cares about it
No one knows anything, however, it has become quite aparent that time is ticking and the Yotes need to get their arena figured out or move. Phoenix is the 5th largest metro area in the state, even IF the yotes leave the NHL will be back in the desert.
Yotes to Utes
10:30 It seems the only solution is to sell the team to owners who have the resources to make the franchise respectable and move them to where the resources exist. The Phoenix area is clearly not a hockey town. That’s ok… there are other sports to align with the population.
Driving around AZ as often as I do I see several areas in my opinion that would be perfect for what the coyotes ownership wants to build that the city of Tempe voted against
@@ElmerFudd16 no doubt. Only really want the coyotes to stay in Arizona because I don’t feel like traveling to Los Angeles, Anaheim, San Jose and Vegas when the Bruins come out to visit the west coast
