I remember when my Bears making the playoffs after a long drought in the mid-2000s. The media ask one of the players what is the best part of the playoffs. He replied with the extra checks" that when I learned that players only truly get paid during the season.
Love this topic because it's rarely discussed. The win bonus aspect in the playoffs is very intriguing. In the XFL this past season, players had a $1,000 win bonus during the regular season. But 7,000 for a playoff win and then 11,500 for the championship game. Players and coaches openly talked about the bonuses being added motivation to win.
Imagine being in the the Patriots Staff getting those Playoff Checks on top of your Regular Pay.
SB bonus
For damn near 20 years strait
8:00 I work with the brother of the assistant S&C coach of the Niners and was told he got a $30k bonus for getting to the Superbowl. Would have been more had they won but I can at least confirm the employees also get bonuses. Keep up the great content JT!
He would’ve also gotten a ring too
Go Chiefs!
150K for the players. That’s fucking insane
HEY JT! New to the QB school, and remember watching you and hearing your name growing up alot. It's great to see how you reinvented your self as an Athlete!, with this platform. Can you do a video that walks the viewers through the process of what happens to first round picks after they receive there signing bonus, and also how players today have transitioned into better business men and not end up broke!
He looks like a mix of Alex smith and Kyle shannahan
Unlike Shannahan his videos are good even in the last quarter.
and Rich Gannon
Kyle shannahan
He is their secret love child.
Really interesting, and not as complicated as I thought it might be.
I liked your comment before the video thats how confident I am you're correct
Great video JT. I've always been curious how this works with the players. I also thank you for your time in Detroit.
My first time watching your channel, but I played WR at Davis so I’ll be sticking around. Your name was always thrown around.
I was always curious about how this worked in terms of players getting paid. Good info here.
I’ve always wondered this. Great content bro. Keep it up, learn more from your channel than any other channel.
Love the content as always! Have you done any videos on cadence? I’ve always been curious as to how cadence is called in the huddle especially for qbs who use the “double cadence” for example white 80 white 80 set hut (No snap) blue 80 blue 80 set hut *balls snapped* are there sessions in practice just doing cadence?
Very cool video!
Couple guys in nfl I know there checks are weekly and crazy glad they worked hard and proved many wrong
Very informative.
I wish he would have broke down with numbers so people can see what he's saying if you follow
Very informative good thing
This was a really great video on a topic I'd never dream of learning about. Thanks JT!
Very interesting topic JT ! I was wondering how does it work when you get cut from the 90 person prelimenary squad to the 53 man roster ? Is everybody on a contract and if so is your contract voided, do you get a release fee, how does it work financially for the guys who get cut ?
Love the vids and keep them coming !!
depends on how the contract is for that player. Some may get cut, and the team pays out the rest of his contract. Some get cut, and thats it for there pay.
Good perspective
"Straight cash homie" -Randy Moss
JT rookie contract with the saints was a 3 year 973k contract with a $68,000 signing bonus

This so great damn who woulda thought Mike Shanahan had a wiser son 😂 would u put a explosion effect in the beginning to compliment the BOOM? lol
🤯💥
Pretty much the same in MLB, my friends son was drafted by Detroit in the 5th round. 450k signing bonus was there the next day.
Except in the MLB and the NBA all of the money is guaranteed and they have to pay you even if you get hurt once you are signed.
@@gphillimo very true, minor league pay is a joke unless you can get assigned to the 40 man roster and play AAA
Thank you. That was very well done.
It still amazes me how many Professional athletes, mostly in NBA and NFL, are broke soon after they stop playing. A Budget and Finance class should be mandatory.
They do have classes now, it just depends on if the player takes the classes and puts into action what they learn
@@johnlewis8934 Agree. But since so many come from poverty or lower middle class, they are not used to having the nice lifestyle. It is after that first paycheck is gone does reality set in. But the folks around them don't want to hear that as they want more money. Then when the money dries up, they are gone. It is hard to build wealth when people are so dependent upon one person to be the savior instead of each person getting up doing something to greatly increase the chances that their life will improve and support each other.
there is a guy who did a video like this but on MLB pay . He called the pay they got in the pre season camp pay as " Meal Money " in a nut shell they only get paid for the meals . (roughly $20 per day )
Can you do a video on how you think cam newton will do in the Patriots organization.
Wow, can't imagine what its like for Cleveland?
Hey JT, great idea for a channel! I have a two-part question for you, what do practice squad players make and what happens (salary wise) if a player goes on and off the practice squad?
They get paid a lot less. Then, they make minimum.
I remember when you played for my Bengals. Who Dey
It seems more and more common to hear of controversies surrounding younger players wanting long term deals (like most recently Dak and Jamal Adams). Doesn't 4 or 5 years seem like too long a time to have to keep star players on cheap rookie contracts? 3 years sounds more reasonable.
I was left with questions.
What percentage do the agents get?
What's an average salary and check in the NFL?
What's the pay for Pro Bowl?
Super Bowl winning team?
Super Bowl losing team?
Super Bowl MVP check?
Season MVP check?
JT, What does the league to do help young players who receive large amounts of money at one time? I always hear stories about how players go through their money so fast without really having anyone to help be a financial advisor and show them how to budget their money. What are your thoughts?
Do A analysis on tate martell or shane buechele
Regardless of the NFL Paycheck, every player should learn how to manage that very hard earned money very wisely. My first suggestion is to not get married or get a woman pregnant. Go get fixed first!😂
And live in a richer teammates guest house/room and ride with them to practice and games so they won't need a car or home.
Former Packer backup Great JT O'Sullivan
Hey JT loving the videos man! Question. Do you pay state taxes when you play an away game (the other team's state)?
I believe they do. I remember seeing somewhere about a player picking a team based on how tax friendly their schedule was as far as home games + divisional games
Yes
why would they pay taxes? delivering the checks?
Yvng Reezy It is considered work when in another state.
you pay the tax in the state you play.
1 question you did not cover : deduction : what kind of taxes and other deduction if any are taken out of a check and are you given a 1099 or W2 ?
I imagine when the owners put players salaries into the escrow account before the season starts is a drop in the bucket
How do taxes work? NFL players must pay state tax in all of the states they play in, correct? How does that work with the player's state of residence? Does that state also expect a cut?
JT, there were two points you didn't cover that would be interesting to know. One, the NFL Player Association fees (if any) as well as how the retirement program works. Two, some of these bi-weekly checks are huge thus Taxes are huge and with the compressed pay for a year over say half year means over paying taxes. How do players learn to handle this?
Seeing that alot of athletes go bankrupt they don't
Really would have benefited from more detail. How much $ for workouts? For camp? Wish that stuff was translated. “A little...”, “A lotta...” money doesn’t convey much.
Thanks J.T.!! Wondering about injuries if your injured and cannot play for X number of games do you still collect the same check? What if you blow out an ACL or something major and get sent to IR? Wondering if that changes your pay? Also is there a change in pay if you move up the depth chart or if you play in a game on the field v. on the bench? I know you mentioned roster bonuses not sure if that was what you meant. Appreciate the content and look forward to more to come.
Dude he said only garanatie is your singing bonus money. If you injured you dont get game check only team paid yours recovery.
I’m watching this and I just get a notification saying the players are getting paid over 36 weeks instead of 17 starting this season
No you didn’t
They're trying to.
Emmanuel Acho and Marcellus Wiley were just talking about it.
Insightful.

Having games in Seattle, Texas or Florida must be circled on everybody's calendar and marked as "Christmas Bonus"....
@3:34 that’s a fine! $2 lol
Great info, the monotone voice literally made me dose off twice, even though I was super interested in the content.
I'm curious how many players invest in 401(k)... probably through their financial advisor.
I wonder if agent fees and things like that are automatically deducted or is that something each player has to do on there own?
Players have to do that on thier own
Lol I remember you from madden
This was a good video. It also explains why Tom Brady is willing to take less money leaving money to sign other players. He knows that by winning not only in the regular season but in the playoffs and super bowl he's going to make his money back. Plus the more he wins the the more endorsements he's going to get.
Doesn't hurt that Giselle's net worth is $400 mil.
Facts...that's why I credit Brady more for the dynasty they had in NE. It's not necessarily what's he's done on the field (though he's no doubt an all-time great) and not to take away from the genius of Belichik. Belichik carried Brady early on with the defenses he fielded but the discounts Brady always took enabled Belichik to construct what he wanted on his terms to be good, year in year out. If Brady asks for his market value every contract, IMO I don't see the yearly SB contention playing out like it did. Then again, people can certainly be justified if they think the opposite.
Belichik AND the Patriot organization were extremely fortunate Brady didn't get top QB value during his prime playing years. He sacrificed some of his personal money to keep OR sign better players AND keep winning. The Pats were competitive during Brady's 20 year run. Giselle's money is great BUT it's not like he was getting paid one million dollars a season. The QB is the highest paid player on MOST NFL teams. He was compensated pretty good. REGARDLESS. He's not hurting. He wants to win. REGARDLESS. This is one reason he is the GOAT!
Are players taxed the same home or road games. I heard depending on what state they play in, at the end of the year, they have file they have to pay taxes in that state.
State dependent
Aren’t signing bonus checks spread out over time? And now they manipulate the cap with voidable years on players contract. Like kicking the can down the road
Some. Not most.
Don't forget when JT changes football teams it's time to change your furnace filter.
jt o sullivan nfl qb 4 years
An example would be more helpful for us math challenged!
Is there like an nfl office job where you aren’t playing in the game but involved with your team
Why are the crazy amounts of money not wired automatically?
If most players get less money for playoff games than regular season games, is it a common theme that players should get paid more in playoff games to better reflect a regular season game? Or would that create too much of an inequality between playoff and non playoff teams?
In MLB we had a lockerroom boy fee. Payed every day or week to each park we played in. Does the NFL have the same
lockerroom dues at the end of the year. Yes, bot really a fee. More like a tip you better give. not for other teams though. Only your staff.
I went to H.S. with a NFL player, somehow he went thru 18.5 Millon and ended up broke!!
I heard from the guys on the I am Athlete Podcast, that around 70% of players lose all their money before they retire. Quite sad really.
@@chm1701 Because its not stable money. Players blow/party away the money and don't save. Next year, they get injured/released and no more pay checks.
@@chm1701 its much higher! watch espn 30/30 BROKE. 80% are broke within 2 years out of the league! no concept!
I thought the NFL brought in former players and/or financial advisors for the rookies so they could get a handle on how to manage their money?
They do. It's part of the rookie symposium. Individual teams will also have sessions for new players and rookies, even to the point of teaching them table manners (so they feel more comfortable and professional at business lunches and team events).
Did you listen to everybody when you were 21, 22? I didn't.
@@TheQBSchool I see your point. Hopefully some of the veterans will add to those pearls of wisdom.
Didn't stretch to 10 minutes.
Good YTer.
I keep seeing things like the net worth of NFL players being like $50 million is that true, do they actually make that much money?
I wish you would have picked an organization and gave some average numbers
do you pay taxes based on who you play for or where the games take place ?
the state on where that game is played that week.
I remember when MTV Cribs was a thing and sport stars will show off their houses. Unless they're Lebron James or Carmelo Anthony in their rookie years, I doubt any of them will maintain the lifestyle of a $6 million dollar mansion, 5 luxury cars, and a million dollar home for their parents.
So when they talk about the guaranteed money, is that additional to the salary or just a guaranteed portion of it and the rest is paid in game checks?
Signing bonus is separate from salary/game checks
@@daveg4236 So if somebody signs a $10 million contract with a $2 million signing bonus, they get $2 million when they sign and then $10 million/17 in game checks?
@@CJFloden 10m deal that includes 2m guaranteed. So now if it's a one year deal then take that 8m and divide by 17. But...looks like these comments are saying the checks are spread out different now. I don't pay attention.
Remember to chop that game check in half for taxes and an escrow that they pay into
@@daveg4236 ok that was my initial question. Thank you!
Bear in mind that owners are just paying their staff, just like an owner of a trade shop paying his foreman and workers. Can you imagine what the owners really have ? Yikes
The bottom line is, it’s not how much money you make. It’s how much money you keep the bottom line is the players do not get paid the enormous amounts that all reported they probably 50% of that maybe less
If JT was a first round pick, I think the 49ers would have stuck with him longer.
It sucks because he played great, but then threw a few picks, and that's all it took for them to give up on him.
JT was far more talented than the other quarterbacks on that team.
Martz should have given him a longer opportunity.
If a player signs (for example) a 5 year deal worth $60 million. Can a team cut a player for no reason or simply because they aren’t playing well after the 2nd or 3rd year?
Yes. But still may have to pay guaranteed money if I’m contract.
Why do players offen file for bankrupcy? Do players not manage their money properly ?
Sometimes it's not how they manage their money, it's how someone else does. There are stories all the time of financial advisors mismanaging their clients' money. And of course the obvious, people blowing the bag once they get it.
Do you get paid or a bonus for winning the Super Bowl?
Do you still get a check if you get hurt?
Depends
It’s crazy how billon dollar companies pay people minimum wage but the nfl can pay players millions of dollars and that’s an entire league of 32 teams
At least they pay the players for 52 weeks as of this week
So players make less on playoff games than regular season games?
Most do
Did player have to pay for there jerseys
When a player gets fined, is that before or after-tax?
After! IRS and state don’t care about you missing your work out or game or fight. That comes out of your pocket, after state and federal put their hands in there.
@@EuroGuy85 that sucks
I know these guys only play for a certain number of years, and they take a tremendous amount of punishment to their bodies! And they have to deal with those injuries for the rest of their lives, and the shock of now what do I do? But for the average person who gets paid every two weeks, the Friday before you get paid and you have $1.31 left and nothing to eat, can’t understand how NFL players go broke.
U can set up the contract the way u want , some players break it up to be paid all year round
What? I guess. Most don’t.
@@TheQBSchool most don’t ur right ,
New drinking 🍸 🥃🍺game...... Everytime he says a lot of money, drink
a check for $20K would change my life
There are players making 35 million. Is that player got paid every game 2.187 million would be his check roughly before-tax. If that player got paid every other game 4.375 million dollars again before tax . Now imagine getting $20,000 you would have paid more in tax weekly then that check would be worth if it was still 20,000 even if it's $200,000 you get a tenth of what you normally would get and would still be five times higher more than actually then the average American's salary to put that into context if you made minimum wage at $15 how excited would you be if you showed up in the check was $1.5 hour. I don't care how much money you make if you get the big dollars you negotiated correctly and position yourself well and hope and pray you don't get hurt because you're learning window at Max would be 20 years I think that's where Tom is so that is doable but most likely you will see 5 years and never see those numbers unless here in Rogers Russell Wilson Dak Prescott is close to he signed that franchise tag for 31 million for some added context which wasn't really needed but in case somebody wanted to have the numbers crunched for them to something that they would recognize
do nfl players receiving their entire signing bonus immediately?
depends
What is this guy name?
you forgot checks for training camp
Mini camp is a stipend....rookies average about $900/week for mini camp. Your paycheck only starts after Game 1 or Game 2 if your team pays bi-weekly.
He looks like a cross between Matt Ryan and Alex smith

My cousin was drafted by the Titans and parlayed that rookie contract into a big payday with the Bengals as a FA.
That signing bonus with the Bengals though boooooy.......😎
He's been out the league ten years now.
Just like teachers they don’t get paid over the summer
I didn't learn anything from this.
You see mahomes signing $500,000,000 contract over 10 years. That's best case scenario.
What would ge most likely make? Even a player who has a say, $6,000,000 signing bonus..They don't always get all the sudden 6 million just like that. Or average salary of so many million a year.
You see their net worth, it would seem they should have 50 million after so many years, but only worth about 13 mil.
signing bonuses are paid up front. no matter how big or small. except roster bonus, that kicks in the day they make the 52 man roster
Thats because net worth does not equate to the amount you bring home. Your net worth is total amount of your assets minus debt. Just because you make $100K yr does not mean you are worth 100K. you pay bills, spend money on groceries, etc. Your net worth is the value of assets (minus cost/debt).
Except you left out the most important part being that them damn checks are literally THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS and in alot of cases in the NFL with MILLIONS upon MILLIONS for them weeks which is ALL the difference compared uhhh let me think, mostly the rest of us all out here which means it's extremely EASY to LIVE comfortably where you absolutely don't have to worry about damn struggling or LITERALLY with anything for that matter including taxes unless you're just stupid as hell and HORRIBLE with money which is just bad for you and at that point you're screwed either way!
So what if you miss a game due to injury?
You get paid while injured.
What is this gentleman's name?
