How Strong Was Genma? (Minato's Strongest Bodyguard)

- Genma is one of those Naruto characters that everybody recoginzes but people usually don't remember him. But how strong was Genma? What were Genma's true powers? He was Minato's bodyguard and certainly the strongest Hokage guard the Leaf Village has had.
Genma knew the Flying Thunder God taught to him by Minato and was the proctor of the finals of the Chunin Exams where we had the Genma vs Baki fight. Sure, it was off screen but it was something. In the War Arc he pursued Muu and fought alongside Mei to protect the Feudal Lords. There was also the Genma vs Sound 4 fight in the Sasuke retrieval arc. Mostly off-screen too.

Since the very beginning… I’ve just assumed that Genma was chewing on a piece of *wheat/straw,* similar to what farmers and southern people do in movies, cartoons, etc. 🌾👋🤠 I guess it would’ve been far more practical to “chew” on a senbon needle, rather than a toothpick. I mean, who woulda’ ever thought, right!? 😅🫴

Its not just even what he did its who he did it to because baki is the strongest jonin in sand village at this time and arguably the only people who ever surpassed him are gaara and his family but lets say something happened baki is so strong he would be kazekage material

Genma was always my favorite member of team “Those two guys in Naruto, but not those two guys” The durag, the spiky hair, the Senbon in his mouth like the cool dude in an old 90s flick. He just gave off a cool vibe, easily my favorite background character, so I was happy to see him get more development.

Gemna and Raidio's biggest contribution is forcing the Sound Four to go Course Mark level 2 to beat them (and this is with Genma and Raido having just gotten back from another mission and being tired themselves), which left them weakened for their fights against the Sasuke Retrieval Squad.

That's not true. Ninjutsu literally means Ninja Art or Technique. Kunai are tools. There is an entirely different category.

That’s my biggest pet peeve with naruto, all the really cool and interesting side characters who get no development despite their potential.
If Genma was apart of Minatos personal squad that means he was chosen at age 15 that is wild. My all time favorite background characters are Kotetsu and Izumo I wish they got more screen time .

kishimoto missed a lot of potentials. on genma and also on raido. raido was also well known for his black sword and assasination skills. the manga and anime only focused on some kids with godlike powers that they got out of nowhere and forgot the real ninjas

I think the series attempts to imply a lot of these background Jonin are actually really powerful but just aren’t important to the story. Like Genma, Aoba, the aburame, Ibbiki, and probably many more im forgetting. That’s just how many underutilized characters there are.

his special ability is probably senbon needle or flying raijin (low level). do you remember shizune use senbon needle when fight against kabuto, when tsunade first appear? i think she learned it from genma. and some people ship those two together, because of their interaction when shizune was worried too much when genma was down after against 4 sound ninjas. His also good at speed, so with his fighting ability kunai and senbon with speed, it's similar to minato. in anime, war arc, you can see how genma fight against black zetsu and use kunai only but with flexible movement and speed.

About where Genma was during the 9 Tails attack:
I forget where it's mentioned, but when the 9 Tails attacked, younger shinobi were prevented from helping defend the village to protect them. Specifically, the generation of Kurenai, Asuma, Might Guy and Kakashi. Since Genma was Might Guy's teammate and found Kakashi's team in their chunin exams, he's around their age. So its likely he was also prevented from participating in the attack and helping Minato w Obito.

I would say Genma is between Low to Mid-Jonin comparable to Asuma. I really dislike the many plot conveniences during the War Arc especially how Genma and his team has a convenient Jutsu (Flying Raijin) to teleport Mei to the 5 Kages location for their Madara fight. Had Mei ran, it would have taken her hours to get there but Kishimoto got lazy and decided to give Genma and his team the Flying Raijin for plot convenience.
How is this plot convinience you act like this is such a big deal having 3 people need to know the flying raijin they were minatos guards so it makes sense they have it 😂
@@RedditGuy_1 Yes, “Minato’s Personal Guards” which is actually the first time Genma and his team relationship to Minato was mentioned right within the same panel they asspulled this jutsu at a highly convenient time. Had Mei been with some other platoon, then 3 nobodies would have this same jutsu.

Genma first debuted as the replacement proctor after Hayate was killed and his teammates (Raido and Iwashi) were mostly nobodies in the background. There were no mentions of them serving as personal guards to Minato or any prior Hokages. You can look it up yourself.
A good foreshadowing would be had Genma talked to Kakashi about Minato, who was his student, or to Naruto after the Pain Arc saying along the lines of “I knew your father, Lord 4th, I was one of his personal guards” in some small talk. Kishimoto failed to set it up making the whole scene an asspull.

One of my Favorite side characters is Gari! As a kid I always thought the Idea of having explosive punches as a jutsu would be cool, and when the Resurrection Arc came about and they introduced Gari, I was amazed! He's a famed shinobi from the stone Village and a member of the Explosion Corps, and is able to use Explosion Release, a kekkei genkai which allowed him to combine earth and lightning chakra natures to utilize explosive chakra like Deidara, except he mixes his explosions with taijutsu. Defiantly an underrated character!

Don't overthink this y'all, just cuz you do tricks doesn't mean you up in ranks, and just cuz you have a rank doesn't mean your actually at that power level, the system is weird. He wasn't a fodder character but not enough to be considered a main character, the commentary guy explains it all well, every reason he isn't a fodder character no matter how odd it was. Also don't waste time comparing to other characters which then leads to overthinking that character, no, Asuma with depleted chakra would not defeat the sound four if they even had curse mark mode on or not.

Genma & Raido, along with the Sound 4 are underrated. People conflate ranking with power & skill too much. People also have a tendency to overrate or underrate Jonin power levels.
I like to see it as this: Jonin is literally a village's elite shinobi. While it's easy to see most shinobi as fodder in late Naruto, it should also be noted that the attention in late Naruto is given to many kage+ threats.
An average shinobi in Naruto would be a chunin level threat. Based on Genma's assessment of Sasuke in the Chunin exams, and the strength increase of Sasuke up to the final valley, I'd say that by the end of PTS, Sasuke is probably high Chunin to low Jonin. I use that as like a baseline assessment for any jonin level fighter, with occasional exceptions.
As a baseline, it of course doesn't apply to fighters that are far beyond that. Kakashi for example is no doubt above most Jonin level fighters even before becoming a kage.
Lastly, it's important to remember that each village has different standards. I personally believe that the Sand is vastly weaker over all to Konoha, and thus have vastly weaker Jonin. Certain Leaf Jonin could body child Gaara who was untouchable in the Sand.

Low-Jonin is someone like Ebisu, who easily lost to the Naraka Path, which was relatively weak. KN0 VOTE1 Naruto was much more impressive with his clones and chakra pool. In canon and filler, it was strong enough to put mid to high-Jonin level guys on notice with its power output alone.
Land of Waves Sasuke had low-mid-Chunin feats, like doing decent against the Demon Brothers, defeating Zabuza's weak water clones, and outmaneuvering a suppressed Haku for a bit. He then gets 2 and 3-Tomoe Sharingan (which allowed him to react to transformed Gaara and KN1 Naruto a bit, respectively), Chidori (which gives Jonin-level damage at base), the Curse Mark (which gets a boost and a new transformation on top of its already good boost, and it seems to amp his base even when inactive), and more experience. He was able to low-mid diff KN0 VOTE1 Naruto with just the CM amp on his base (not even a proper usage of a stage) and 3T.
Itachi at 8 and with a 2T was able to low-diff an ANBU. Sasuke was less talented, but he had much more going for him at VOTE1 than that Itachi.
