Trev, i started watching you during lockdown when I started to save my BMW Mini from the scrapyard, by stripping it to the bare bones to access the rust patches. I watched many different videos on welding and metalwork, but yours were the best by far! The car was saved, and has been on the road for 18 months with plenty of years left. Thank you!! 🤘

I'm an old fart. Dad taught me how to Oxy/Acet weld aluminium when I was about 14. I consider MIG to be used for structural work only.....thick metal. I like TIG. But I really love to use the Oxy/Acet because it can be dressed as you go and there's very little finishing to do. I love your work too.

I converted my Clarke Mig 160TM Turbo to the large euro torch, internal gas solenoid & dinze earth as both were very short. The transformation is incredible! Only problem is the lack of fine settings. 10 years sterling service can't be bad. Another good cheap tool is my B&Q Macallister finger sander. 8 years of utter abuse so far! Who says all cheap tools are trash? Cheers. Leigh.

Glad to see you back doing vids Trev.
One small add to your comment on tig and Aluminium welding.
Recently watched a vid from another welding channel and on thin Al. Up to 12 gage it is possible to tig Al ( non structural) using DC with electrode positive setup on your DC tig using straight Argon.
Again not recommended for any structural members but for Alloy panels and frame bracket repairs can be done.
Often done on alloy pipe fittings.
Love your tips and tricks .
    Tuning in from Australia.

Great explanations as always Trev. On the subject of cheap welders, I tried to research as much as I could when I bought my welder. I went for the Sealey Supermig 150. It was about 10 years ago now, I don't know if RTech were in business then I can't remember. The Sealey welder has been good, the wire feed is not the best, but I think it was definitely value for money. I have done loads of welding on 4 cars now. However, if you compare like for like, there is £100 difference between the Supermig 180 and the Rtech 180A MIG, if I had my time again I would willingly pay the extra £100. Sealey have quite a good name, but are predominately made from Chinese bits.

Trev, if you have to weld outdoors and it is windy, flux core can work better. Also, heavy duty welding is not being performed with dual shield welding which is a special flux core of mainly 0.045" or 1.143 mm and it is welded with gas. I am no encyclopedia nor an expert welder bu I try to learn what I can. I have no experience with Dual Shield.

re: cheap welder at 12:49 you make a valid point. if that cheap welder calls it a day or you cannot get tech support, yes you have to bin it. I've also found there is literally no market value for a cheap welder that still works as I've tried to sell a few. all that being said I have a more expensive welder and its complete crap. so it works both ways.

Top notch video Trev. Should clear up a lot of points people were confused about. Now what about this mythical 3 kW laser for 26 UK pounds? I'd love one, if it was real! (don't turn around when it's on though, or you'll fry the guy bringing you a sandwich and cut through the shop wall.) 8^) Cheers!

Lidl Special discretionary purchase £77-00 novice MIG welder repaired my daughters Freelander sills and rear arch fronts…plus some underside stuff.. flux cored. Welds okay.. but wire feed is pants and slowly getting worse..
Still awaiting R Tech to send me a 180 (numerous hints left on Instagram posts) one can but dream and having the neck to ask etc.

Who does welding - constantly for ten minutes, while repairing or restoring an old car? To me, duty cycle doesn't mean a thing. I've never had ANY problem, even replacing whole rear fenders.
Duty cycle is important, only in high volume, fast delivery production.
