- A drum & bass mix covering some of my favorite pieces to be released over the last decade, starting with classics from Hybrid Minds, DKay & Marcus Intalex, taking a look back early in the decade with bits from the likes of Grafix, Drifta, Komatic & Calibre, Feint, Blu Mar Ten & Netsky, there's a sprinkling of LSB, Seba & S.P.Y, classics from absolute pillars in the scene like Logistics, BCee, Total Science, Silence Groove & High Contrast. Taking note of who came through and made a real impact with artists like Keeno, Etherwood, Malaky, Dawn Wall, Monrroe & Nelver. This is one of those mixes I can't believe I didn't find sooner. At first glance the good track selection is apparent. There are some tunes which I believe any true drum'n'bass fan can recognize. Hearing them wakes the memories of a point in the journey through music when we first encountered them, or replayed the most. In other words, it's nostalgia evoking. But what stands out is the transitions between the tracks. All I can say is: boldly done. For example the transitions from Under The Sun, to Whisper, to Steady- I wondered how that would sound, or if it can be done without sounding weird. Yet you executed the transitions in a way that I think transcends their sub-genre, and sounds pleasing at the same time. Or how you blended Moon That Never Sets with Major Happy. That you made Laurence and Lotus Symphony sound like a single track is amazing. You're also a don for including two of my favorites, Seba and Blu Mar Ten. I'm half-way through it, and only fairly recently started to look for more old-school tracks again, so the neurofunk in this is a nice addition. Used to be a metal fan, and have always appreciated a bit of heavy-hitting DnB.
That all makes the mix familiar, and at the same time unorthodox. You have some real skill, and people are not wrong when they comment that you're the most hard working DJ on youtube. I only briefly encountered your work on other channels before, but I think this is worth a subscription. And *thank you* for your effort and these mixes. Puts me in an elevated state of mind like almost nothing else I know. That's drum'n'bass. :)
Wow, thank you for the subscription! It's struck me how you mentioned listening to metal previously, it's interesting how many of us dnb lovers also listen to genre's, as a child of the 90's I too grew up with similar influences, though I guess the evolution there makes sense since the genre's mentioned are all relatively fast drum oreintated music :) really appreciate you taking the time to delve in deep and deliver a truly humbling critique!

A fellow 90s sojourn. :) I agree, that was the time when a lot of new types of music started to emerge, music that our parents didn't know. The only other instance of that happening in the past few decades (that I can think of) is the 50s, especially when Chuck Berry and Elvis took the stage. As for us who feel love for DnB, I think it's not surprising that you also have other musical influences. As they say, DnB is a bastard child of dance music, and an underground presence that will definitely never be sold out completely. It's too diverse and stubborn for that to happen. So it's a safe bet that those who manage to find and stick to it are just as diverse, or at least more demanding than the mainstream crowds. They called it "intelligent" in the Bukem era, and I'd say that still reflects upon its producers and fans alike. Seems not many people can comprehend and enjoy this uncommon fast tempo and breakbeat structure. But the similar time signatures made the switch from rock and metal quite natural for me.
You wrote that you were mixing for 15 years. Which tune(s) made you a drum'n'bass fan, if you don't mind me asking? Do you have a favourite sub-genre? I always like to hear this as it oftentimes gives me more venues of DnB to explore.
Absolutely, this genre selling out entirely would be absolutely impossible, there's too many cracks and crevices and plenty of individuals working in their own fields and remits, the internet has exacerbated the ability to share your own work and get exposure on an exponential level, those operating in their own field have more of an opportunity to thrive than ever. This is also true though I believe many dropped the term "intelligent" in the early'ish part of last decade as it comes across as somewhat pretentious to many lol, you're right though it still does exist within the genre, though it's been somewhat redefined in the modern day production through application of engineering processes rather than reforming structures which seemed to be common in the past. As for tunes that got me into D&B, "Take My Life" by Dillinja & "Mistical Dub" by Marcus Intalex & S.T Files are among early memories, "Titan" by the Ram Trilogy is another, for my favorite sub-genre within drum & bass, having uploaded quite literally hundreds of liquid video's I'd be hard pressed to say anything else, though neuro & jungle still heavily tickle those taste buds. How about yourself, any particular tune that grabbed you onto the genre?
@@MrBurntYoghurt You're right, I heard Goldie talking about DnB on a Chicago radio set from '95, and he also said "it's just drum'n'bass". But considering there's not many who know of it, and fewer still who like it, I can't help but be reminded of the adjective that Bukem used. Especially if I think of how many people answered "what music do you listen to?" with "whatever the radio plays", or sometimes even "everything". If I heard that, my next question used to be: "even death metal?" :) It seems like a lot of those younger than 30 didn't really take the time to form their own taste, and I bet it's also why liquid funk and jump-up became so saturated lately. Not many are prepared to dive into the music anymore, and just go with the shallow flow. Back in the 90s and before MTv's demise as a quality music channel that wasn't such a problem, but now that flow is almost completely being directed by the media and record companies. And as can be seen, about 90% of those are not as intent on making quality as they are on making repeat customers. Chase & Status' movie sample from their tune Hitz tells it best. "I make hits, not the public. I tell the DJs what to play".
I was in that rut, but State Of Mind's "Sun King", and then B-Complex's "Beautiful Lies" turned it all around. I'll remember that day for the rest of my life, because it was like awaking in a new world, and with a permanently improved mood as well. It was only 10 years ago, so I'm not as fortunate as you are to have witnessed the beginnings of DnB. But lately I'm making up for that with a vengeance, almost feeling like travelling back in time when I'm sifting thru all the old school, jungle and various other tracks I can find. Neuro (especially Axi and Rregula) and jungle are likewise saving the day for me since lately there's a lot of producers who take the lazy route. Your mixes are an immense help while searching for quality, because as a liquid fan they're like a catalogue of a lot of my favourite artists. I can only express gratitude in that regard. Oh, and my future posts are going to be shorter lol.
