It looks like Brad was not trying to get in the way of the shoot- he was demonstrating that his tail looks just like the growing vine. He’s so clever!
Hahaha omg you are so true :D
This whole time I thought his name was Bread.
@@abbyolson60He would make a tasty loaf so it fits.
Very cool plant! I love the *ahem* vivid description of it attaching to it’s support 😅😂
😂
Hahaha :D
Beautiful plant! Looks like birds have been perching above it.
😅😅😅
Haha the cat was in statue mode when you called him, one of my dad's cats does this as well. They know they are something to admire🤩
It is a beautiful plant, for sure. It would be fun to grow, especially with the color of those gorgeous leaves. Thank you for doing a time lapse. It's like when we tell people our Calathea moves toward the light and you can visually see it, they think we're full of shit until it moves and scares it out of them.
Cant tell you how calming this is. Thank you :)
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Can you please do a video on signs of maturity on your plants, like inflos, change in internodial spacing, rooting behavior, change in petiols and so one with a few more closeups?
I think that would be fascinating!
Greetings from Germany ✌🏻
Yes, this! Maybe a difference in the aerial roots as well.
Suppose that really varies between genus & species but I can try :)
@@sydneyplantguy that would be awesome!
Especially the different inflorescence fascinate me, and since I'm not likely to get my plants to flower anytime soon, that would be a great way to enjoy some anyway.
I've propagated my discorea discolor using cuttings a couple times already (in perlite), I found quite easy, but I'll have to try the potato method next 😂
I love that time lapse video! I love any flora time lapse videos. There is a doctors office near me that plays one in the waiting room and I could watch that all day. So satisfying. Thank you!
Yes, when you watch them in time lapse they definitely 'come alive' :)
Absolutely love your humor, ❤️the Giggles!!!!
Thanks :)
To be honest, I just hate it when people doubt your plant growth. Anyway, she is awesome. Calling her "potatoes" is really funny. Little confession, when I'm down, I'll run to your channel to find comfort. You help me a lot in a way 🌿🫣🌿. Thanks Jan
Thank you so much :)
The pole dancer of the plant world!!! 🤣😂🤣
I can listen to you talk all day long. Your voice is so calming
Thank you:)
😻 OMG I need that plant in my life 😭. Yours look so vibrant and beautiful it’s giving me life 😻💞💞💞🙌🏾
It’s a show stopper !!:)
I've seen several utubers try to grow this beautiful plant. They definitely have paled in comparison! GORGEOUS! And little Brad❤
I’m jealous. This plant is growing so slowly for me.
Try more light maybe :)
This is one of your fun plants enjoy seeing it every year
Me too :) thanks !
That was some amazing growth. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful plant, thanks for sharing the care of it!!!
Absolutely beautiful plant Jan! I've been meaning to try it myself. With the difference in our seasons ( I'm Northern hemisphere) I forget to source tubers in spring. Might I suggest a seasonal reminder video, to go back and watch your spring lineup ( especially this ornamental Yam) when it's autumn for you? Time flies when you're having fun😹 Thank you for sharing your plant journey even while I'm only dreaming of spring here.😻
Your time will come :) but for now it’s our turn woohoo :)
Wow…a fast growing and beautiful plant, and cute baby Brad❤️
Pole dancing disco-rea 😊
I just love you! You’re so funny like oh I’m lying! There is growth!
That time lapse was soooo cool!
Thank you :)
Thank you, that was really interesting and educational.
What a beautiful plant! Thanks for sharing its journey with us Jan.
Thanks :)
A beauty front and back. I really appreciate all the effort put into this video. Time lapse was so cooll!!
Thanks :)
I didn’t wake up today thinking I’d watch a yam hump a trellis, but I’m glad I did.
Hahaha :D
That is a beautiful plant 😊
LOL I’m dying as you describe the plant humping the pole 😂🤣
🤣🤣
Brad steals the show again!! Great video and plant!
Thanks:)
Yes love this plant, mine went dormant for 2 months and it’s back again, thank you for all the tips.❤
Thanks:)
One leaf cuttings work very well, I took some cuttings before my dioscorea goes dormant and they rooted very fast even in fall.
That’s great to know :)
Beautiful plant👌
your jawline is to die for
Thank you for sharing beautiful and amazing plants lovely collections beautiful houseplants lovely
Thanks for watching :)
Gorgeous! I have an Alocasia Polly that I am still working on finding the happy place for.
A wish list plant for me. 😊
“Bradley what are you doing?”
“Watching over my estate as the king I am! Silence peasant!”
Can’t wait to see that gorgeous plant in a couple years again!! Big potatoes!!
"humps the pole" lmfao this is the commentary that keeps me coming back for more plant guidance.
😂😂
這顆葉子漂亮,好看🎉
“Humps the pole” baahahaaa, just had to pause the video to comment! Lol
So pretty so jealous of your plants
catching up on youtube and i currently have a 2 node cutting in water of this plant. really hope it makes it and will one day look like yours!
I’m sure it will :) mine started as a tiny plant… just stay patient :)
I think that is a wonderful summer vine. I would love to find some tubers
I call them potatoes too! 😅
I love your videos
Thanks :)
Wow i'm never see this plant after. She grow faster than a never see.
You both are beautiful! 👍🏻🥰
Wow I love that plant I need one of those
Where did you buy that from
While watching you pick out the tubers...my mind went to the song "one potato, two potato, three potato four" 😅
جميل جدا ماشاء الله
Can’t believe people think you are lying 😂 Great video as always!
Thanks :)
Hi Youn, I really liked the format of this video, very informative and complete care video! You grow this plant really well. Have you seen it flower? Can you propagate it by cutting. Thanks for sharing and happy growing 😊
Awesome video, I've watched it multiple times now and have just got my hands on one! Do you think you'll repot it with new substrate each year now?
I really love the foliage of your plants! They’re full of lush. Im just curious how you maintain them 😍
Im so shocked at how pretty those leaves are! They look like Anthurium leaves
Absolutely amazing!! I so want to try this but I’m afraid I don’t have the space for that much growth!! Oh who am I kidding. Of course I’ll try it anyways. 😂
haha sounds like a future issue :)
i breed Dioscorea discolor too. but my discolor was very small and not pretty as much as yours. i didn't expect it can grow as much as yours.
Have you tried adding a bit of Seasol to your water Jan? It lessens stress and helps with cellular health. I put 12 squirts per 3 litres with GTFF and now my plants are getting so big I can't lift some of them to water. They stay in situ.
I use GT Rootzone in adding to FF instead :)
Beautiful plants
😮😂 the Timelapse portion. Pounding indeed
🤣🤣
I made the mistake this summer of planting 4 healthy potatoes in a pot about the same size. Even a 2 metre obelisk doesn't know what to do with it - lots and lots of cutting!
Wonder if I can find one of those over here! Beautiful leaves!
Sydney, I absolutely loved the time lapse. Post more like this. Is it possible to buy these tubers and plant just like you did?
Thanks :) yeah you should be able to but obviously depends on availability in your country :)
I read Dioscorea and thought about Elephantipes (because I own one), don't think I've ever seen this one before. Interesting :)
Indeed interesting, mine develops leaves before going further so this grows a bit differently from what I can see. I put it on the list, Now I'll only need to steal 8 lives to be able to own and care for all those plants
This year it was the first time it grew toooo much before inflating leaves , not sure why it did that 🤷🏻♂️
@@sydneyplantguy good to know, gives a better idea of what to expect. The plant looks nice either way, I can really appreciate seeing how a plant tries to establish itself like this
Idk if this is the same as other decorative yams/ sweet potato vines, but I propagate them all the time with no issues.
Very informative, I knew nothing about discorea exept it exists, now I am a little bit wiser 😅 leaves are gorgeous but somehow looks like pooped by birds 🤣 nature is amazing 😍💚
Haha now that you say it :D
amazing grower. i can't go over the fact it looks like a bird took a crap right in the middle of the leaf though.
Haha now that you say it :D it actually looks quite nice and silvery irl
@@sydneyplantguy maybe I’m silly and missed you posting about it on one of the socials, but have you tried the polkadot begonia??!
When you did the side view of the leafs the silvers and emerald greens showed forsure
❤
Bananas, incredibly fast growing! Spring bulbs indoors!
"Smells very organic" LOL
Beautiful. I want one of those! 😊 Where would you suggest I can get one? If you didn’t want it to out grow the trellis, could you cut the top of the vine off? I don’t do a lot of moss poles but the foliage on this plant is gorgeous and I would like to try one since you have such a great tutorial.❤
Yes eventually I just cut off the tops :) last time i checked even bunnings stocked them but maybe a quick google search would give you more certainty :)
You can propagate from cuttings, they'll eventually grow tubers too!
Good to know :) thanks :)
Oh my gosh amazing! I’m going to try!
How do you keep Brad out of all of your beautiful plant pots? My cats will play in the dirt and make a huge mess. Your plants are absolutely gorgeous and make your home look like an Oasis!
Thanks :) I do nothing, he's just not interested :)
Thank you, I need one potato of thees
I wish i could see you having variegated anthorium foliages.. i have hybrids of hokereii and other similar varieties with different varieties. Quite expensive but worth to have in the collection
I have one but it’s not coping well :D haha
@@sydneyplantguyo wow that great to know… am really up for collecting rounded athoriums and anthorium folliages. For the philos/monstera/eppi, i only kept a few like the florida beauty which until now its always awe me.
Beautiful plant and interesting video. I think if you trained the stems horizontally as much as possible from the base, you would get more even growth on the trellis and less spilling over the top. Maybe? Perhaps you have tried this already?
I prefer letting it grow naturally for as long as I can :) it will definitely always spill over the trellis. It just grows way too fast
@@sydneyplantguynaturally? 😍 But fun to see it race to the top! ❤
It came back sooner probably because it's inside and warmer!
It’s always been inside to start off the season … i reckon it was the warm spring in combination with the repot :)
How did you overwinter it? Well I should have watch further before I asked that question just never mind you answered it
Thanks Jan, that was great 🤩😍 Love the sexy timelapse 😇. I only got mine last season, and it's not showing any signs of reshooting. Do you reckon I should scratch around and see what's there, or just fertilise and wait longer, or is it too late?
Thanks :) i’d be too curious … i’d have a sneaky look, maybe some fresh substrate too :)
@@sydneyplantguy me too, on the list for tomorrow. 🙂
Love this plant ! Can we propagate with stems or is it just "the potatoes" ?
Some left comments saying they were able to propagate it via a node :)
Oh that's great News 😃
Oops 🙊 sorry I didn’t actually watch the whole video before I started asking questions about the sweet potata vine 😊❤
What is that plant on the left side of screen? 15:37
Hey Jan!
Currently I am preparing for the spring for the repotting. (I like to make thoughts that early 😂).
But still I can’t decide whether I use Mosspoles or planks. I’ve seen videos that it can work both ways.
Do you mind doing a pro/con video of Mosspoles and Planks? 😊 Pleeeeeaaaase
I have done one already where I compare different types of support :) it’s in my Moss Pole Playlist - spoiler alert: moss poles win :)
@@sydneyplantguy ouh really? Then I guess I didn’t pay enough attention to your playlist. Noooooo I don’t like spoilers 🤣😁
My problem is just, that I am struggling to keep them moist. I know that there is a possible to use plastic sheets on the back, but I don’t know if the difference is that huge.
And I also found a solution for Propagating on planks: Air layering. So propagating wouldn’t be an problem. Argh I just go and watch your video! Thank you for your efforts, I just love your videos!
@@MrFreakplayer well if keeping them moist is too much of a hasste for you then go with planks, it´s that easy. You can also decide to just do one or two mosspoles for the beginning and see how you like it. I did that and put my adinsonii on a pole, first I had a diy mesh pole like Jan does, but I didn´t relly like it (might have been how I build it) I know have a pole out of PVC pipe, witch just a wide opening in the front. The moss holds on it´s own and there are no bars in the way if I ever want to take it out and propagate. It´s also quide sturdy and easy to extend, though not the prettiest (grey plastic, but could be spray painted)
I think a closed pole makes a significant difference in how fast it dries out, as does the diameter and the humidity you have. I also have plants like my green monstera which is not on a mosspole, as I don´t think it needs it, it´s growing just fine with a normal support.
@@MrFreakplayer
I was having the same problem when i First started using moss poles last year. I realized the moss I had was "Forest moss" and not "sphagnum moss". It must be Sphagnum moss!! The plastic backs help a TON if you are in low humidity like myself. A friend of mine couldn't find plastic backs and actually tried using "saran wrap/ cling plastic" (the one from the kitchen) which works wonders for her. The serial roots grow through the thin plastic and it retains the moisture Extremely well. Worth a try for some cheap plastic :)
Happy planting 🫶🏻
@@regi985 guess I will try 2 or 3 Mosspoles with plastic backs. I’m still looking for a transparent plastic sheet. The one I purchased broke into half by trying to bend it 😅🤦🏻♂️
My Monstera deliciosa is the only plant which is on a plank, because I don’t want to propagate him.
So, I have an organic yam, in the fruit/veg basket, and have kept it there because of the gorgeous purple leaves that sprouted out.
Then I stumble across your channel, new subscriber! Do you think I can do the same with this yam? It’s about 2 handfuls in size. I’d love to try it, if you think it will work. Bury it all except for what’s sprouted? Idk, but I LOVE your videos!
Please, let me know what your opinion is. Take care 🍃🍂🍁
I suppose you could :) thank you :)
😁😁🤟
You can actually propagate these from a leaf cutting! I have done it both ways personally. 😊
Thanks :) great to know
@@sydneyplantguy you're welcome! Imagine all the props you could get!! 😂😬
Where did you get the yams Jan, did I hear you say you started with one?
Yes :) i got it from a local grower 4 years ago but have seen them at bunnings since then too :)
Love it, what is the common name for that plant? I’m in Canada and wonder if I can buy it!
Ornamental Yam
Sooo do you think your yam 🍠 plant is the same plant as our sweet potata vine in Indiana of the USA I think maybe yes
Where do you get your cache pots?
Various places, most of them came from bunnings though:)
I just got a baby in the mail today. It doesn't have any tubers and no white color on the leaves. Will it get the white lines on the leaves as it matures, or do I have a different variety? My leaves look kind of brownish and camouflage
The silver comes with maturity from my experience
@@sydneyplantguythank you! Keep doing what you are doing, you are great! I have so many plants and moss poles, and anthurium. You have inspired me more than you know. About to do my first chop and extend on my verrucosum, and I'm concerned it may not have enough roots in the pole, but not much else I can do as it's at the top of the 6' pole haha! Thank you again!!
Hi
How long we can keep fertilizer mixed water? For plants to water
I have no idea... I suppose it would also depends on the fertiliser.
@@sydneyplantguy ok.
I wonder how good it would grow in hydroponics
Mmm i feel like it would love it but never tried :)
So pretty plant, what's the name of plant? , so thanks you very much!
Dioscorea discolor
Sensual plant xD
Could your potatoes be called corms just like alocasia has?
I think it's called a tuber :)
How long does it stay "alive" with leaves?
Usually 6-8 months before it goes dormant !!
@@sydneyplantguy Thanks. Love your fast replies.
People who say that plants can't grow that fast have obviously never grown vegetables before.
100% :D problem is that people that know the least are usually the most vocal … dunnings krueger effect :D
It’s very similar to a vegetable called ‘Choco’ not sure of correct spelling. It grows like a beast, probably a foot a day,and every spring you start it off with the Choco.
I really like the trellis that you made for it,it’s so stunning. I actually like the way it grows new stems and leaves every season and the rest I’d put aside and forget basically. 🪴🌿🌿 Natalie
