    Fair play to ye Philip, at least these poor calves will have a chance now you have them, shiver to think where they would have ended up if you didn't step up for them, best of luck hopefully they'll all make around 550 kgs,

    Hi Phil, would you do a video on the economics of the bulls you sold recently? Purchase price, cost of meal, bedding, grass, fixed costs etc? Would be interesting to see. Maybe take a good example and bad example ?

    Your animal videos are criminally underappreciated / underviewed Phil!! Very interesting video and agree with you on the potential for Jersey beef to generate similar profit per kg (or atleast not a loss) vs an Angus or BB that might make more at sale but probably costs a lot more in long term too! Too many fellas get caught up in the end price, not overall cost of production. Interesting too your take on economy of scale for ye that ye can make it work due to being such a large operation and also having equipment for silage and tillage etc, had never considered that and neither does IFJ or Agriland when they're advising the pros and cons of Dairy to beef.

    Good on you Phil, as you say the fresian calves might not be picasso's, but someone has to rear them. And better they be reared here in ireland than in God only knows what in another country. And the fresian can be every bit as good to finish as a continental. So good on you for giving them the chance. And I wish you the best of luck with the pb jersey's. 👍

    My grandfather was an old time dairy farmer. His cows were all registered Jerseys. By the time I came along, he no longer had a bull for breeding, but always said Jersey bulls were mean. I know he always was happy with a baby heifer, but not so if a cow had a bull calf. He never kept the bull calves. They never told me what happened to the bull calves, but I finally figured it out. So sad. The cows we had were so sweet and intelligent. I do know in later years he would breed his Jerseys to Angus. But, I no longer eat beef.

    At the moment I'm selling British friesan bull calves for 50 euro , sold some for 35 at 3 weeks old at the mart.... The same type of animal ten years ago at the same age was making 200. Have the same customers coming to me for years looking for fr bull calves. What is happening with some of the dairy bull calves is disgraceful.
    My neighbour bought Whitehead bull and freisin bull calves from me a few years ago... They were slaughtered at the same age , weighed the same and were priced the same. Some were actually heavier than the whiteheads but didn't grade the same
    The cheap prices are justified for Jersey calves but some of us got screwed for the last few years.... So much so, that I'm using sexed semen from now and a good source of freisin bulls is gone of the market. Sorry for the rant but I'm fed up with the bullshit. Fine calves with the ability to feed a whole family for a year given a bad name and some other lad making all the money at the end along with the factories
    Great to see you making some use for em Phil and not being exported or slaughtered at home in Ireland for veal.

    • @georgedoorley5628
      @georgedoorley5628 Před 3 lety +2

      the more people that convert to the dairy the more calves will be for sale at this time of the year ........ also the grid in the factory hammers the poorer o grade cattle , and as for the p grade its robbery ........... 2 reasons for the decline in calf prices ..........
