  • When playing offball you should ALWAYS point to the wide open man. This helps the player with the ball make the right decision. And this helps you become a better passer.
    Thinking from other player's point of view WILL deepen your understanding of the game.

    I disagree with this video. Some players that called for the ball were really another option and making the ball handler aware by giving him a target. Simply putting your hands up also can make the defense shift to the player, making another player open.

    • @CoachFrikki
      @CoachFrikki  Před 3 lety +180

      Thanks for the reply. They for sure were options. But in both situations there were better passing options.
      Good point that putting your hands up can make other players open. But as the defender commits to you then you should start pointing to your teammate if he is a better option.

    • @yercules
      @yercules Před 2 lety +23

      There are both pros and cons to pointing out the open man. As a compromise a player could use more subtle body language, such as pointing with head and eye movement. Personally I'd say this would also build more trust and chemistry among teammates. But it would be interesting to see statistics if such tactics are more beneficial, or detrimental.

      I read a quote that said "sometimes playing selfish helps u improve" is that true?

    • @CoachFrikki
      @CoachFrikki  Před 3 lety +53

      @@Danny-or4gw Good shots are good shots. Bad shots are bad shots. Learn about shot selection and make your own judgement (rather than simply doing as the bullies tell you to). If you are getting quality shots (shots that you practice a lot on your own) and making them at a good rate (making 50% of your 2pt finishes and 33% of your 3 pointers) then keep shooting. If you're getting tough contested shots and/or miss 2-3 in a row, then you need to chill and make some adjustments.
      I was in basically the same situation as you. What I did was find that middle ground between shooting myself and passing to the selfish players. I got REALLY good at driving and passing out of those drives. Drive past your defender and rack up assists to your teammates. That way you are challenging yourself, improving your quickness/handles/court-vision while keeping your teammates happy, it's a Win/Win situation - no player is gonna scold you for consistently creating open shots for them.
      But at some point you're gonna have to become a 3point and finishing threat to open up those drives and passes. Best way to work on that would be to play a ton of 1v1 vs good defenders. Best thing about 1v1 being that there are no teammates shitting on you when you make mistakes.
      "Sometimes playing selfish helps u improve". If being selfish is out of your comfort zone then that will definitely expand your game and you'll learn things about your game and your self by doing so. But don't take it too literally. Always look for a high quality shot whether it's you or your teammate who's getting it.
      Also you can answer every basketball tips questions by simply getting better. If you start training/playing/lifting/studying for hours every day you will improve very fast and most of your problems will disappear. Those selfish players won't say shit to you when you become better than them and can destroy them 1v1.

      one thing you can do is make good passes to the selfish players when there is an actual opportunity for them to score. if you pass to them just to pass to them, they won't appreciate you. next, find your own openings. if you show that you can score, your teammates may look to pass to you more. run a lot, find openings in defenses, run on fast breaks, etc. this will help a lot in showing that you can play ball rather than just passing to pass. finally, if your teammates are really just that selfish, either find new teammates or improve yourself, dont worry about other people. - my 2 cents

    • @axelgomez7819
      @axelgomez7819 Před 2 lety

      danny you should try faking the pass to selfish players to make the defense react. that should open the lane for you to drive and become the selfish player, but only finish if you have a good look. if the defense collapses on you, that's the time to look for an open teammate 😉

    If you want to give credit to the player that has a little bit more court awareness or understanding of the situation, great. You can say they have a higher IQ but that doesn't mean the other player you are trying to point out is selfish or has a low IQ. There so many variables and different scenarios. There nothing wrong with letting your teammate know where you are on the court as an option. No different than telling the guard that you are trailing the play because he can't see behind him. Which tells him he has another option if he doesn't see anything else.

      In general you're right. But in the 1st clip it doesn't make any sense to ask for the ball. His teammates have a 3v1 situation while he's way behind in the backcourt.

    I don't know. If a player is open and doesn't get the ball, I don't think it's low IQ to call for the ball. Obviously, it's great to point to the open players when guarded if the ball handler doesn't see them. But there are times where it helps the defense if the ball handler can't make the pass right away. Might be better to come up with short code to throw 1 finger in the air for near corner is open 2 for opposite corner and 3 and 4 for the wings and 5 for up top and 100 for open plays or mismatches at the rim. Or even just yell the name of the player that is open

      @RicardoAGuitar Před 2 lety

      I'll say this: if you do have the open shot, you absolutely have to take the shot. The whole point of working the offense is to get a quality shot. Passing out when you're open is just as selfish as shooting while covered.
      Bruce Bowen, no one's idea of a ball-hogging scorer, would shoot his shots if they were open. There's lots of guys like that. If you're out on that floor, be ready to shoot if the shot is yours.

    I would add don't clap your hands to get the passer's attention - its annoying, disrespecful and selfish.

    • @CoachFrikki
      @CoachFrikki  Před 3 lety +5

      Great point. Don't clap, call for the ball, make high pitch sounds or (the worst) scream the ball handler's name.
      Put your hands up if you're the most open guy on the floor. Point to someone else if he's more open than you.
      But other than that shut up and let the ball handler make the right decision!

    I disagree with the first play mate, a fast break situation where everybody is looking for the man handling the ball and not trying to put a set defense. I'm pretty sure the guy asked for the ball because he has clearer view of the whole court rather than just going in to the rim because of a fast break.

  • @WhiteArtemis

    The one who pass the ball also need a high IQ.. if not then they could be confused if all their members are pointing each others and nobody asked for the ball xd

  • @jesse11111
    @jesse11111 Před 2 lety

    Idk why I got recommended this but the play at 0:40 is 100% the wrong play that ended up working due to bad defense. Defender went for steal on the pass and gave up the lane. Ball should have went to 10 then kicked to corner if the defense closed in. Or if the defender played the pass to 13 correctly then it would have been a kick out to 10 with the corner still open if need be. In the NBA 9 times out of 10 this play ends with a 3 being taken. The other 1 is if number 3 on defense played the fast break correctly and cut off the passing lane around the top of the key and didn't quadruple team the ball handler. Just a clip of bad defense, not of selfish play.
