- Long considered the Switzerland of the Middle East, Lebanon is now going through the worst economic crisis in its history. 80% of the population lives below the poverty line. In one year, food prices have jumped 500% due to galloping inflation.
For Riad, who runs a grocery store in the suburbs of Beirut, business has become hellish. Every morning, calculator in hand, he changes the labels of his products according to the day’s exchange rate. An operation all the more complex as his store is plunged into darkness, due to lack of electricity. The Lebanese government no longer provides more than two hours of electricity per day in the country. It is impossible for the population to heat, light or use their refrigerator. Taking advantage of the situation, a network of private generators has emerged.
The Lebanese pound, the local currency, has lost 90% of its value. The only ones to get away with it are those who are paid in dollars. The greenback, which is exchanged for a fortune against the local currency, has given birth to a new privileged social class in the country. A salesman in an international pharmaceutical company, Joseph lives like a king in a ruined Lebanon. Thanks to his new purchasing power, he repaid his house loan in two months, instead of… twenty years!
In a bankrupt state, plagued by corruption, six out of ten Lebanese citizens now dream of leaving the country. In Tripoli, in northern Lebanon, Mohammed and his son left by sea to reach Germany. Although their trip was cut short off the Turkish coast, the young father is still ready to take all the risks to reach the European El Dorado.

Lebanese were working in Israel as late as 1976, but then the Palestinians started the civil war, after trying to dethrone the Jordanian king in 1970.

I met a few Lebanese in Nigeria with Nigerian citizenship. They are loved and respected. One man, a road contractor lived a full 40 yrs in Nigeria and only returned to Lebanon when he was given a grave diagnosis.

In many ways, Lebanon reminds me of my own country, the Czech Republic, in that we are the most mafia country on Earth, with about 10% of the population involved in one or more criminal underground organisations. In some ways, that can actually be a good thing, because most of these are family-based informal organisations operating under free-market principles. The problem in Lebanon is religion. No religion, or any other ideology, political movement, or philosophy has ever benefited humanity. None. Religion is just a social control mechanism that conquers by division, by setting one group aside from the rest of society and thinking itself to be better than everyone else. Anybody (or any country) who believes themselves to be better than somebody else, is mentally defective and highly dangerous.

Well yes people and countries eventually set up economies that work at some level when normal state controlled/regulated ones fail. Clearly Lebanon has issues, and has a two tier system based on the currency used Dollars/Euros vs the Lebanese Lira. The LL collapsed when the bank run ponzi scheme failed, and foreign investors fled to a large extent.Their economy could be fixed with some outside help and strict economic controls until a stable market system emerges. But the factions may not have the patience for that.

Lots of instability with Dollars worth more than their "official exchange rate" inside the country, and the Crown less than the "official exchange rate" outside the country. Many interesting things happened because the Crown was not freely convertible. It was only after convertibility was extablished that the rates were all the same. I could write a whole book on this.

Truly heartbreaking to see so much suffering in this otherwise beautiful country. As an Israeli me and my kids would love to help them, after all they are our neighbors, but any help from us would be their death sentence by the same people who cause this misery.

I visited Beirut Lebanon over 10 years ago and this absolutely breaks my heart 🥺💔 I love that country and its people. I met some of the most amazing people there.
I pray that the Lord Blesses Lebanon and they are able to change everything and start over better. Its sad how they are constantly at war. I pray one day they can finally learn how to live in peace.

So sad to see Lebanon in poverty once it was my dream country to visit and still it's on on my list but politics and war ruining the country let's hope for the peace and stable economy to recover again my prayers are with Lebanon

The Lebanese seem more interested in preserving sectarian dysfunction and getting into it with Israel instead shaping up and minding their own business.

Hezbolla is the problem. The Lebanese people are wonderful. Those terrorists, sponsored by the Iranian government ( not the Iranian people), are so full of violence and hate. They want to make a Muslim caliphate and don’t care about human beings.
