    It is crazy that one of my favorite Doctor Who stories, Marco Polo, doesn’t even truly exist anymore. For something that’s been shown to me through recreations and reconstructions and telesnaps, even just the audio is enough for me to fall in love with it.
    I recently moved to China for work, a few hours drive from Chengdu. One of the first things I thought of, rather insanely if I’m honest, is that “here’s water, Marco Polo” line. It’s burned into my brain

    Ah yes, William Hartnell, my all time favorite doctor. I never knew much about my actual grandfathers, but he was like one to me as I watched the show growing up. He was the 1st Doctor, is the 1st Doctor, and will always be the 1st Doctor.

  • @Someguyhere111
    @Someguyhere111 Před 4 měsíci +9

    I've heard critiques that Hartnell was a bad or below average actor 'cause he was clearly having trouble with his lines and stumbled over them often, but I understood that most if not all these scenes were one-takes, and to me, the fact that he can stumble over his lines but still keep rolling, and play them off as just quirks of his character, proves what a great actor he is. Honestly, it took me a while to realize that was even what was happening at all, it just seemed like that was part of the Doctor's character.
    I also loved this period where the companions were there to do more than just ask the Doctor questions and marvel at his sheer brilliance. We do still get glimpses of competancy from companions in the modern era, but here it truly felt like each character was an equal member of the team with something to offer.

    If I would personally have done one thing differently, it would have been to focus even more on Hartnell's later years in the role and especially the later companions. Still I understand that the show's inception and earliest days are the most important (and, probably, most interesting). Fantastic work!

      @@cleverdickfilms I have a very conflicted view on Peter Capaldi's era. I love Clara Oswald, Missy, Davros (who only had 2 episodes but by God did he deliver) and the overall story arcs, at least for the first 2 seasons. I even have a soft spot for Danny Pink and Ashildr could give one look from those tired eyes and I'd see a million years contained in an 18 year old body.
      However, I couldn't stand Peter Capaldi himself. I didn't stick around after River Song's story was wrapped up even though, on paper, he should have been my favourite Doctor. Ironically, I actually believed that Davros was more sincere about questioning his morality than Capaldi was. Put John Hurt in Capaldi's place and Series 8 and 9 would be my favourite seasons.
      Capaldi made me feel like I was watching the Valeyard on a redemption arc. And I would have been fine with that if not for one problem. The Valeyard wasn't in the scripts. Michael Jayston was still alive at the time so if the Valeyard's presence was intentional, they should have brought him back. When Clara was about to walk to her death, I half expected Capaldi to break into an evil smile and tell her that he planned it.

    What's crazy about your statement about people knowing about the Daleks, is that I didn't know anything about Doctor Who just a couple years ago but somehow knew that dales were from Doctor Who. I watched the parody "Inspector Spacetime" on Community and immediately knew it was a parody of Doctor who. It was Troy and Abed's love for Inspector Spacetime, that first got me to check the show out. Now I'm hooked. I just wish I could remember how I knew about Doctor Who without ever watching it.

    In retrospect, I wonder if we can explain the First Doctor’s initial rough edges as resulting from his forced regeneration and memory loss as detailed in the Chibnall era. Obviously that wasn’t the original intention, and we all know how controversial the Timeless Child/Division plots are. But it weirdly can fit with a Doctor who, in recent incarnations, had far fewer scruples.

    Hi Richard. Firstly, I thank you for your dedication and superb work on this episode of the DW retrospective.
    I have to say two things. Firstly, while I appreciate that you remade the Hartnell episode with more details and new information that has surfaced since the 60th, but I felt that this episode felt too stuffed with detail. To its detriment. The original focused more on the core characters and people that were envolved on the production of Who, particularly Lambert and Hartnell. So, in a way, some of the expanded detail heavily leaned the episode towards the production rather than the concepts and ideas of the episodes that were analysed.
    Despite this, I have to say that is also the reason I ended up enjoying this episode more. When your original video came out, details and stories about the early years of Doctor Who were scattered on several multimedia sources (f.e. An Adventure in Space in Time and Paul Hayes' book). So in a way, and that is my understanding of your expanded video, you tried to compile all that information and expand on some more details. I also believe that ever since BBC Archive channel was created, more of the archive of the corporation has been made available to the public, allowing for bigger scrutiny in regards to what was said and done during the production of Doctor Who.
    So, to summarise, thank you Richard for this wonderful video and I hope to see and hear more from you soon.

    WOW! I haven't watched this yet, but thanks so much for this update - over an hour longer than the original Hartnell video! Given that this is now called "Part 1" (instead of the introduction video), I'm guessing you'll be updating the entire series, which is great. I hope you will make it nice and easy for people to find the "first part". I recently recommended your films and I wasn't quite sure which "first video" to link to. Perhaps you can create a playlist? Also, I do still think an introduction video would be nice, so perhaps that could be first in the playlist? Finally, don't forget to re-name the original Hartnell video something like "old version - see new version" or whatever. Cheers! :-)

    Excellent work. A true documentary that emphasizes the history, struggles, triumphs and importance of the series. I look forward to future installments.
    You mentioned that the production was recorded in continuous takes with minimal cuts, when did that stop?

      Thanks very much! Glad you enjoyed! As to your question, the inclusion of more location filming as the Troughton era got underway served to break up the recordings but I believe the studio recording was still undertaken on the Friday evening. I don't think this really changed until well into the seventies after Equity relaxed their rules regarding working hours. Something for me to research in more detail for later revised and expanded edition!

    I am grateful you redone William Hartnell’s era. I felt like he was not given the same treatment as the second and onwards doctors eras. Thanks Dick! (I may or may not have major respect for Hartnell’s contribution to Doctor Who. The man defined the Show. The last Relic of his era then passing on the torch to Patrick Hartnell, and the rest is history.)

And hopefully the algorithm will pick it up soon because I know if any creator deserves the boost its you🙏

    As expected, a brilliantly informative, highly entertaining, and expertly crafted video that's a must watch for any Whovian. A superb remaster if you will that’s even more encompassing than the original video. Truly an impressive labor of love. I can’t sing my praises for Richard higher. This is a masterclass of how to do a documentary-like video.

    My version of the beginning portion would be set in 2005, my nan settling down on the sofa getting ready to watch the new series of Doctor who in April, unaware that her yet unborn grandkid would one day, not long from that day, would watch it alongside her in earnest.

  • @supersecret4390
    @supersecret4390 Před 4 měsíci +1

    I grew up watching the revival series, I always found the classic series to be this alluring hidden world as a child, I would read about it in magazines and watch (but not really understand) the odd episode that I found on daily motion or was given on dvd as a present. Though I've never truly lost interest in the show and have always watched and discussed every episode as it comes out, the announcement of Russel T Davies and David Tennant returning back in 2022 truly reignited my love and fascination with the show and led to me finally starting a watch-through of the original series.
    I was and am really surprised at how much I now love Hartnell's portrayal. The clips of him I had seen previously plus David Bradley's pretty naff portrayal didn't make me excited about him at all, and had always considered him in my bottom 3, I saw him as this obligatory incarnation that you had to get through before the show spread its wings properly and we got a much more familiar version of the character with Troughton. but now I do really love him, especially his more heroic characterisation alongside Vicky and Steven (Who I also really love as companions), and have found his era very exciting and experimental. I've just finished The Dalek's Masterplan which you didn't hold to high praise here but I found extremely exciting, although yes it does drop a bit once they first return to the Tardis, but I found it really landed in the end. It all felt very urgent and high stakes which kept me truly captivated - which I wasn't expecting to see at all until at least the 70s.
    Really great video, I've watched your original one a few times, I often find myself binge watching all of your era reviews when I am unwell or working on a project, but it's really interesting seeing this now after seeing most of the episodes you're referring to, and seeing how much my perception has changed on the era. Very much looking forward to the next one - whether it's another expansion, a Capaldi era review or something else entirely

    Ive never seen the first 2 doctors at all but im fascinated to learn. Something about Dr Who and Quatermass always gave me a tingle of fear and excitment other scifi shows didnt quite hit.. the incredible music, the storylines, they were that bit darker and scarier, something i enjoy returning to as an adult with these great videos, thanks for your hard work!
