Ling Ling is finally at peace - at last there is a person who doesn't butcher this marvellous composition and instead combines insane technical skill with beautiful and intuitive flair and expression. Well done!!
This is Stevens technique, the 16ths are played using a stroke type called multiple laterals, other difficult things featured in the piece are triple laterals, fast one-handed octaves, and independent rolls. Looking up any of these techniques should give you good information and/or exercises. Few have perfected this grip the way this guy has.

I would assume it's from lightly pressing the wooden part of the mallet against the vibrating note, the same way you would very lightly touch a vibrating string to produce a harmonic. I don't play marimba though, or any percussion for that matter, so take that for what you will. If you've already tried that and failed, it could be that he's holding the mallet loose and allowing it to vibrate as well and that's the sound we hear.
Buzzing on a percussion instrument is normally made through holding your stick/beater/mallet looser and pressing the head or the beater really hard against the bar and letting it bounce a little bit. It is hard to explain through words but I hope this helps you out, good luck with your playing.

at 1:03, he bounces the sticks, like you would do when playing a roll on the snare drum.
