Mini Vise Restoration [Bonus To My Huge Vise]

  • A mini vise restoration is the subject of this video. I saw this little vise on Ebay classifieds and had to have it right away. He's practically the baby of my other vise. Restoring this mini vise was a lot of fun and should only have been just - for - fun.
▬ What is being done?! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
At the beginning of every restoration, including that of the small visr, there is dismantling. Then I clean the components with soap and water. I remove the old paint with paint stripper, then I put all parts in a bath of rust remover. With a file and other utensils I work on the mini vise, all unevenness is removed and the vise jaws are reshaped. I clean the surface again with acetone so that it is free of grease and oil. Before I apply the primer, I mask off all areas that should not be painted. Now I apply all layers of paint. All parts that move mechanically are provided with grease or oil. Now all that's left to do is assemble, the most beautiful part of the mini vise restoration. Now the little one shines in new splendor and can return to his other vise mom. :)
    ▬ Good to know ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I bought this small mini vise on eBay-classifieds (10 €) and just had to have it, it should be the opposite of my other vise, because it is huge and extremely heavy at over 104 lbs (47kg)! I made this small, in the truest sense of the word, restoration out of just-for-fun. I had a lot of fun doing it, as always.
    The dimensions:
    0.5 lbs (249g) in weight
    3.3 inch (85mm) long
    1.9 inch (48mm) wide
    1.7 inch (45mm) high
I used the following tools: cordless screwdriver, wire brush, toothbrush (for washing), tape, foil to cover, knife, rust remover, file, various sanding attachments, sandpaper, primer, top coat, spray paint
It took me about 8 hours to restore, without the paint drying time.
    ▬ Chapter ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

    1:23 Wash components

    8:01 Prepare components for assembly
    9:31 Reassemble the mini vise

The slide surfaces were painted originally, and you left them unpainted after the restoration, plus removed some material in the rust remover and subsequent grinding.
This resulted in so much play (wobble) that the vice can barely be used for anything :) I know it's mostly a decorative piece, but it should be working sensibly...
In case of normal-sized equipment the glide surfaces are always unpainted and precision ground to ensure smooth operation, but in case of this little baby it was different.

Nice little vise. I do wonder why you didn’t paint the bottom of the tool. You primed it but didn’t give it a coat of green.

I wonder, why not use baking soda with boiling water first to loosen up the filth and then clean with dishwashing soap.
Nice job either way, subbed and binge watching your channel.

    • @pehhii
      @pehhii Před 3 lety +1

@@ForgottenShineRestoration I use it quite often, just remember to first sprinkle the baking soda (I just eyeball it) and then pour the boiling water and let it sit for a couple of minutes and after that finish it with the dishwashing soap.

Unimpressed, too much un necessary "work" just to fill time in a video, paint is too thick, black paint on tommy bar looks really bad, should not have been painted at all. You painted the jaws then sanded it off, why? Filing and sanding after painting is never a good idea, should have been done before final painting.
