  • The Office of Public Works’ annual Winter Solstice gathering at the Neolithic Passage Tomb of Newgrange on 21 December was cancelled this year, due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions.
The hugely significant Solstice Sunrise event was live-streamed from within the Chamber, on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of December, so that everyone could experience this wonderful phenomenon from any location around the world.
During the closure, an archaeological research project was carried out at the 5,200 year old Newgrange monument where we scientifically measured and monitored the movement of the winter sunlight coming through the roof box into the passage and chamber, to determine how the beam of dawn light interplays with the chamber as we move towards Solstice and then past it.
Results of this research project will be issued in 2021.
Live recording officially commences at 14.10mins on this Video (Please fast-forward)

Just what my Celtic spirt needed this morning as Jupiter and Saturn also align up tomorrow - the Great Conjunction - we are all reminded that our place in the Cosmos , our Cosmic home, is here, now and forever, in time and space.

It's the complete opposite at Carrowkeel in County Sligo. The chamber there captures the light on the longest day of the year. Carrowkeel is several hundred years older than Newgrange.

In the Burren in County Clare there are many unexcavated cairns. Several are at the summits of large hills and mountains. Slieve Carran is spectacular but Turlough Hill has both the large unexcavated cairn and over 100 hut foundations. It's an amazing site to visit and the views are astounding.

People show up on the exact same day as the people who built the alignment into their monument over 5,200 years ago and that alignment will continue 5,200 years into the future on the December Solstice. I hope this information gives some joy for although the technical issues are intricate, the monument itself is a testament to our understanding of the motions of the planet rather than guessing how the Newgrange builders understood the great daily and annual cycles.

Yes, I kept thinking how remarkably similar the sunrise view over the landscape was to everybody else's. While the commentary was interesting, I think a reflective, contemplative silence, with just a single camera view of the chamber, would have captured more of the moment.

The roof box view I'm only seeing at 36:30 ish, we could have a multi cam of the first chamber view, the roof box passage view side by side, and a long view of the top down camera underneath. Split the view into thirds. We do know what the sun looks like, so past the sunrise we don't need it too much. Great stuff

I'm sorry, but I am very disappointed in the coverage. I hope tomorrow's coverage is better. Why did you spend so little time in the chamber and so much time on the sunrise? Everyone knows what a sunrise looks like. Inside is SO important. And where is the triple spiral in the chamber? Please put a camera on the triple spiral! This was very sad... I'm sorry.

Thank you for sharing this 💚 I especially loved the views from inside (though the sunrise was pretty). It would be amazing to see continuous video from each angle. I would watch them all!

It's very straight-forward, in conception. You could use sticks to line up your build with the sunrise. In execution it's remarkable: moving the stones, placing them vertically so that the passage remains open to the light from the box, then closing it all in using corbelling.

Beautifully done, many thanks. I was wondering what the ancients did at this time, were there fires and food and song and dance. I hope so.
