  • Coming off one of the most ground-breaking albums of the early 80s in The Hurting, today’s featured duo, Tears for Fears really upped the ante for their 1985 follow-up Songs from the Big Chair. True titans of rock and pop, nobody was bigger that year. And the echoes of today’s featured song still shake us…Shout not only went to #1 it became A key track that would have the arenas chanting along in unison, and the song was intended to be nothing more than an interesting album cut. In fact, it was just a repetitive chorus, and the song’s composer, singer Roland Orzabal was reluctant to even finish it. But his bandmates including his other half Curt Smith, knew it would be a worldwide hit It took some convincing, and a whole lot of time to finish: The longest process of the band’s career. and it’s a good thing too because it led to another #1 hit called Everybody Wants to Rule the World and an inside joke inside the song about a music exec bullying the band to cut 5 seconds off of it to make it radio-friendly. The story is coming up. Next on the Professor of Rock.

Today we will once again celebrate one of the greatest duos in rock history: Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith, otherwise known as Tears for Fears…. We will also talk about their talented supporting cast… and give you an inside look into songs from their exceptional catalog. To my ears what the Beatles might’ve sounded like with synths… These guys are truly special.
Today We’re going back to Songs From the Big Chair and covering TFF’s anthemic protest piece Shout. But before there was Songs From the Big Chair, there was Tears For Fears’ debut, The Hurting. This masterful album was released on March 7, 1983, and featured a trio of angst-ridden singles: Mad World, Pale Shelter, and Change.
According to Roland, the whole thrust of who Tears for Fears were came out in The Hurting. That thrust was a fearless confrontation of childhood trauma and pain, guided by one Arthur Janov… who’s primal therapy book Prisoners of Pain inspired the band’s name. Prisoners of Pain posited that emotionally scarred adults could find healing by dredging up their repressed adolescent pain and giving it a voice. So in a sense, The Hurting was a 41-minute-plus new wave primal scream session. Raw and intensely vulnerable, the album was a hauntingly candid look into the souls of Smith and Orzabal… and, as many listeners would discover… themselves.
However, once the dust had settled and the pair had spoken their piece, they wanted to take the band in a new direction. Said Roland, “When we finished that album, it was almost like, ‘OK

In 1985, I was 11 years old and obsessed with pop music. I listened to Casey Kasem's Top 40 religiously every Sunday and wrote down the top 10 in my diary. "Shout" was my favorite song that summer as it climbed the charts, so those 3 weeks it spent at #1 were very memorable. I was an only child living in an unhealthy emotional environment, spending yet another long, hot summer with my stereo and stacks of library books. The song's success - especially that August - felt like a personal victory for me. Plus, it's just a banger!

This album has a special place in my heart. My father was an audiophile and music fan who had worked in the industry and owned a vintage high-quality stereo system that I wasn't allowed to touch (Macintosh, Thoren, Teaac). Speakers that were part of the furniture and a vinyl, reel to reel and 8-track music collection that included everything from the Moody blues, to Dave Brubeck, to the Dubliners, and Herbie Hancock.
He was also a car guy and had owned several classic and interesting cars throughout the years that I wasn't allowed to drive.
I knew my father loved me, but he was a reserved man and so we didn't communicate much. I gave him this album on cassette because I thought he might like it and I hoped it would foster a shared interest despite the generational difference. Years went by and I didn't hear anything about it. He died when I was 32. One night after his passing while visiting my mom I went and sat in his 86 Corvette, fired up the engine, the digital gauges lit up and Songs From the Big Chair was in the tape deck. I broke down immediately. I drove around my childhood stomping grounds listening and crying. This album represents a connection I had with my father that I didn't realize I had until it was too late.

While your father may have been uncomfortable being close and having good communication with you while he was alive, he came through loud and clear from the other side. I'm not being trite--"better late than never" can certainly be true. I don't believe in coincidences so I'm sure he wanted you to know the two of you were still connected, even after death.

I have always found that when other bands try to cover and reimagine their tunes your points about the makeup of their music gets lost on the other musicians and bands. As nice as the song was it Gary Jules's version of "Mad World" comes across hollow and I always feel frustratingly sorry for the younger folks who prefer that cover over the original. Everyone has their own tastes in music, so who am I to criticize? Still, it seems the potency of what TFF created deserves more respect.

Explains so well exactly why those of us with the heavy, overwhelming past and growing up why we automatically feel the deepest emotions whenever we hear and listen to the song. Even if we've struggled to hear the lyrics beyond the chorus - its the energy, emotions and projection that brings out our most deep and primal cries of expression and releasing of so much pain we've endured. And for some of us, likely guys, also brings out a really strong, somewhat aggressive power with a little angry determination of either vengeance, or in my personal case, a aggression that shows and proves even through it all, we have and will continue to power through and never waiver of buckle in.

The same can be said about Def Leppard's Hysteria. When someone mentions Def Leppard, the first thing we think of are the classic Hysteria songs. When someone mentions Tears For Fears, we think of Songs From The Big Chair. The world around us is too busy with life to dig deep into what Def Leppard and Tears For Fears has been up to. If Def Leppard and TFF don't put out new material, then there is no marketing. No marketing means no public knowledge. It cost money to market. These guys clicked with me the first time I heard them. They had rock sensibilities and a groove that was irresistible. I still love listening to these guys. Thanks, professor.

I absolutely love the fact that you know and name the actual gear used in songs. Being a keyboard player/ gear whore myself, big respect buddy! This is my favorite channel! Being 52, I relate 100% to everything you put out! ❤😉

Not who you are asking, but survival sampler put out by rough trade- it was a cassette tape that came in a can like an army ration- so many great songs and groups- know it is a weird request, but so ‘80’s staple!

SFTBC is a masterpiece. Really feel that The Working Hour would have been a hit too. Love that song. Their latest album, The Tipping Point is absolutely fantastic!

Incredible album! Everybody Wants To Rule The World is - hands down - my favorite song of all time.

  • @darthmeow1370

That's funny, as that line really ties together the song's theme for me and gives it the punch that brings it home. When I hear "Everybody Wants to Rule the World", it tells me a bittersweet story of ambition denied in either a "so close but not quite" way or a "greatness couldn't last forever" way. Viewed with that line as the kicker, "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" means everybody has huge dreams but they're always disappointed in the end. The world will fight to keep you from the heights you dream if and even if you somehow manage to beat the odds and make it to the top your moment in the sun will be temporary. Sooner or later, you have to let it go.

Yes. Absolutely go into depth on Elemental, Raoul and the Kings of Spain and Tomcats Screaming Outside. Roland displays his melodic genius and stellar songwriting in a way completely apart from his work with Curt Smith. My wife and I just recently saw them in Ridgefield WA and it was incredible how good they still are and continue to be. Long live TFF!!!
