Graphic at 3:42 - Simple, effective, great stuff.
For all those asking about Noise gate placement in the chain - that is tricky - there isn't just one place it could/should go.
The short answer is “after the point where there’s noise.” But it’s often more complicated, because noise can occur at many points in a signal chain. That’s why some noise gates includes both a main input/output section to plug into an amp and an insert for connecting your noisy effects into a separate loop for reduction at multiple points in your signal chain.
If you are not using a delay or a reverb, go for the end of the chain. If you are, place the noise gate before these effects, otherwise it will interfere with their performance. Some also like to put their noise gate after their high gain pedals such as overdrives or distortions. That way the pedal kicks in to deal with the noise produced by these effects when a lot of gain is pushed into the signal.
In general, if you’re not sure where to best position your noise gate, listen to your signal at different points in the chain; listen to just the pickups on your guitar through a clean amp, then to your amp with no effects, then with one effect at a time, and so on, to determine where the noise is worst. Placing a noise gate after that point is a good bet. And if you find that there’s so much noise that you’re clamping down to the point that it degrades your signal, try using multiple noise gates on mild settings at several points in the chain to tamp down the noise, before it is amplified by other processors and circuits.
Remember in all cases to place any noise reduction processing before delay or reverb effects, as the noise reduction will have a tendency to clamp down on reverb tails and softer echo effects.

Your first 3:59 are hands down the clearest and most logical presentation of conventional pedal board wisdom I've ever seen--and there are plenty of exemplary presentations in print and on CZcams. And nobody did the sequential presentation of visuals like you did--there is a difference between the more abstract, categorical nature of the gradual building of the diagram and the concrete, literal, and specific information given by someone talking about their pedal board which can be seen in its entirety. I find your style reinforces the verbal information much more than the usual point and talk style in, say, another superb video, "Perfect Pedal Order with Steve Vai," which is another brilliant take on conventional pedal wisdom, his personal board, and then, of course, a blend of a plug for the new Waza craft pedals as an update of Vai's board which uses older BOSS pedals. But your first 3:39 are more concise and informative than Vai's 10 minutes or more. And there's no fumbling with real time settings, adjustments, etc. Ba-bim, ba-bam, ba-boom!

Excellent presentation. You didn’t focus on it but did demonstrate light overdrive => heavier overdrive => distortion. Fantastic starting point BUT I suggest keeping an open mind and playing around with order and stacking pedals. I’ve found some really cool sounds accidentally leaving a pedal on and adding another that I thought was “incompatible”.

  • @Beizeiten78
    @Beizeiten78 Před 8 lety +4

I think most people will find a phaser, among other types, before dirt sounds best, because of how it cycles. A boost depends on how you wanna use it; if you want your dirt tone louder, put it after, if you wanna stack or push your dirt harder, place it before. A comp should go after your distortions, because they themselves are compressing, so hitting those already compressed, kills your dynamics. Just my two cents.

Your own board and explanation perfectly exemplify what you said in the first 3:59. Impeccable bartender's logic for your cocktail. Nice sound bytes on the buddy guy wah. never heard it before.
A question I keep forgetting: Many, many writers or video makers insist that a) the tuner should go first because that way it gets the cleanest signal and will be more accurate; b) the wah should go first because it absolutely has to interact directly with your guitar signal; c) a Fuzz Face should go first because, to get classic fuzz tones, nothing can come between it and your guitar signal.
How would you sort these out?
Another question: Wahs often sound, well, execrable after a fuzz face and a wah directly into a fuzz face is a pretty wild ride (the inevitable Jimi Hendrix mention notwithstanding; we don't know what was stock or what was tweaked by Roger Mayer, plus Jimi was playing into triple Marshall stacks that were allegedly dimed). There are many sites and demos devoted to the vexing wah-Fuzz Face interaction. What are your thoughts? Some suggest a buffer between the two.
Of course, follow your ears, but my ears told me to watch your video and ask you these questions. Thanks again!

I realize that there isn't a "set" or "correct" method, but I would like to make sure that I am not destroying my signal or tonal integrity. My chain is as follows: Guitar --> tuner --> whammy --> wah --> noise gate input --> noise gate send --> compressor --> heavy metal --> tube screamer --> boost --> EQ --> flanger --> noise gate return --> noise gate output --> amp. Thank you so much for the help.

Need to jam 5 more noise gates in there. HA!
You have a collection of gates. What are you powering your pedals with? May want a Voodoo power supply or some kind of filtered power. ( I know this gear cost a few bucks! ) Also you may want to get a Hum X for your power out of the wall. Maybe that will control the noise instead of the compressor or gate. I'd try 1 gate/compressor at the end of the chain. May not squish and kill your tones as much.

got a serious question for you.. logic would say.. put the tuner 1st. I have one of the boss tuners. ok. I also have a small red germanium fuzz face pedal.. now, someone said that the fuzz face, for some reason, MUST come 1st, before anything.. is that true? I also have a cry baby classic wah pedal.. what is the right order for these pedals? i also have the same compressor, a fat boost, I have a chorus, phaser, harmonist, and I have an analog delay, and digital delay pedals set up last.. I have reverb in the amp, so I do not need a reverb pedal.. I do NOT have an eq, noise gate or a tremolo pedal, can not afford it yet.. I also have them all in a chain going into the front of the amp..I do not really understand the part about some effects going into the front, and some going into the effects loop in back.. my amp is a Marshall JCM 2000 40 watt combo amp, made in England, not one of the Vietnam specials.. it has great gain, I do not really need any distortion pedals, really, I had a big muff pedal but it was way too big to put on my pedal board.. so I took it off. the only problem is, this amp has good gain, but no thickness, no bass, even if I turn the bass all the way up. and leave the mid and treble like 1/2 way up.. can you help me out here? What is the correct order to put this stuff in, and dos the fuzz face have to go absolutely 1st in the order? I would think that would mess up the tuner..also which goes 1st, fuzz or wah? I have fairly good gear, but cant seem to maximize the potential of it.. I play an American made Fender Stratocaster 2006 year model, stock pickups..so what to do, can you help me out here? thanks!!

Hey hi, uh I have a question...and it's this, I agree with the order that you present in this video but my question is this... from my guitar I go into the tuner... and then the colouring devices... and right after the colouring devices before the motion devices... I put my boost because if I put my boost before the colouring devices it just adds more compression rather than boosting the signal and if I put the boost after the colouring devices than it really gives me more dbs, it boosts the signal rather than simply compresing it...what's your view on this? I'm just curious because I see a lot of guitarists putting the boost before the colouring devices. Thanks. Mike.

How do you remove static, or unwanted noise? That is the mystery some people have, and go to effect boards.

+Jeff Ragencobra It's best to contact Frog directly: frog@elderly.com
Shoot him an email and he'll get back to you with personalized advice.

+Jeff Ragencobra Great question.... what I did (because I usually play a G&L Legacy with single coils)... is purchase and use a Boss NS-1.... one can dial up the noise suppression level to clip above the buzz, hum and static... then will decay gradually as the sound decreases.... very helpful if used properly.
