You know what? Good video. I disagree with how harsh it was, but I agree with the points themselves. They didn't quite understand Sonic level design. I recently tried the demo for Sonic Aural, and I was blown away by the level design, especially Auric Isle Act 2. You might want to cover some fan games

You really shouldn't be deciding what Sonic fans wanted. Mania was loved precisely because it was Classic Sonic, not despite it. And any wait between Modern 2D games is nothing compared to the wait between Classic 2D games (prior to Mania, Sonic 3 & Knuckles was the last one (or if you count Game Gear, Sonic Blast)
Sonic fans aren't exactly wanting Classic Sonic to be left in the past, they want all their games to get love. The kind of games Classic Sonic brings cannot be done by Modern Sonic because its drastically different an atmosphere. Modern is more about storytelling working with gameplay as well as more parkour, Classic is about using one or two abilities for your movement only and doing more with much less.
The issue with Forces wasn't Classic Sonic overstaying his welcome in the series. It was shoving him where he didn't belong. Modern Sonic CANNOT do what Classic Sonic does, and vice versa. Classic works for simpler stories bordering on "Stop bad guy from doing bad things" and a much more simplistic approach. Modern is more dynamic and allows for deeper and more methodical gameplay. The two coexist, not one replaces the other. The takeaway from Mania and Forces was not that we don't want Classic Sonic. It was that we don't want Classic Sonic forced (pun not intended) into Modern games where he doesn't belong.
If anything, having the split between the two is perfect for the franchise. One focuses on the bigger and more dynamic games while the other focuses on simpler, much more light-hearted experiences. Just don't shove either into where they don't belong.
Agreed, though I felt "Sonic Generations" balanced the two well, and offering 2 different gameplay styles well.

12:20 not liking Tee Lopes' Speed Jungle Act 1 is crazy... not liking Tee Lopes' Lagoon City Act 2 is also insane... & Tee Lopes' Special Stage music is also amazing... if you thought Act 1 & 2 from the first Zone were the only good tracks, you weren't listening. there's a good reason Tee Lopes' Speed Jungle Act 1 from Superstars gets re-used in Sonic Speed Simulator as the only track representing Superstars OST, its because its the best song on the soundtrack BY FAR & its not even close.
I love speed jungle act one I've heard it on CZcams and its amazing!!

I see a lot of the "controversy" around this game really stems from,
"damn, I _really_ wanted to like this game, but it's not what I wanted, and it hurts"
So a lot of people take it out on the game saying it's bad because of personal preferences. You are allowed to dislike the game, but the reason given isn't the actual one. It's basically what most people say, disappointing. This is a good game but, just not what we wanted. My condolences to all the real onea out there who really wanted to, and tried to like this game, but their expectations held them back. Praying that we get Modern style 2D next year. You guys have been waiting far too long. I personally love the game, but I'm not blind to how different some aspects are to Mania, and akin others are to 1, 4, and CD. I'm fine with it, I understand why others wouldn't.
Here's to another great year of Sonic, and hopefully more acknowledgement of what the fans want.
The game was rushed again (SEGA needs to give the Arzest more time to cook) thus the inconsistent level design quality, lackluster endgame boss, and very mixed OST. It's not a personal thing, it's business--literally.
@@hortinus but there is still a lot to like about this game. Yes the level design is not like Mania, but it doesn't mean it's bad. Yes the OST is wildly inconsistent with style, but not quality (love press factory). While yes, there are flaws, there is a reason why lots of people love this game. I still do think the reason why people dog on this game (supercon didn't do it) is because they wanted something else, expected something else (2D modern leak). So when they tried to like this game, what they wanted just holds them back. You cannot tell me the reason people dislike Superstars game is purely the game itself. You can dislike a game, so many people having the same opinion of "it's absolute garbage" there has to be something else other than the game itself at play. Which is obviously, bias.

im really enjoying the game so far and its just a nice little 2D classic sonic game, and when a fan hates something, its because it isnt utopia on crack or spark the electric jester but official
people judge these games on if its to their standards and honestly, i can't understand why
its a fun 2D classic sonic game that feels fresher than mania and like mania, feels lovingly crafted in a lot of aspects, it isnt perfect but i feel its deserving of some praise at least
@user-mq8mo9zi4q You see. That's the problem. Y'all acting like people hate it because it sucks. No. We didn't say it was bad. It was more disappointing and an big letdown. The game isn't like the worst thing in the world. But there are things about it that kinda ruins the enjoyment of the game. The physics aren't quite as good as the classical titles, the camera is awful, the level designs are hit & miss, the bosses are atrocious and the co-op; which is the main selling point of this game, is awful. Had it not been for those big problems, the game could've been on par with the Genesis titles or Mania as one of the best Sonic games. But as it is, it is an average game at best and unplayable at worst.
@@jaretco6423 I will never understand what people have against the physics. They're perfectly fine as they are, it doesn't need to be 1:1 to the classics to be good. No game has done that, yet physics (except forces) has never been the main criticism.
But everything else I agree with. I personally like the game, but it makes sense why people don't like it. As many have described it, death by a thousand paper cuts. For me, it's objective quality is about 4-6/10.

Superstars is better than Forces. With Superstars just having more originality and characters, I'm going to be brutally honest. It's more fun.
Sonic Superstars, though can be boring, can be actually fun. With Forces, you don't get orginality, you don't get multi-player, you have Tails being unable to fight a weaker version of Chaos, despite fighting a stronger version of him in Adventure YOU DON'T EVEN GET TO FIGHT CHAOS, the physics are bad, and let's not forget that they brought back auto-scrollers for one of the levels in Forces.
You literally play in 7 different zones or less. Maybe even less than 6 zones. That is less than the likes of Sonic 1, CD, 2, & 3K. SONIC 1, CD, 2, 3K, & other game gear + master system games! Multiple games released during the 1990s.
To say Forces was less of a disappointment than Superstars is a bold-face lie. The literal cause of Forces was because some edgy loser known as Infinite got called a loser by Shadow!
Though Superstars was very, VERY challenging. I'd chose a challenging game over a game I can complete by just mostly holding 1 button. (The Boost Button in Forces).
And Classic Sonic isn't a bad character, I didn't say I wanted him gone, but not to be in a position where it feels forced, so you don't like Classic Sonic, I respect your opinion. But to say that almost all of us fans wanted him gone isn't an opinion nor fact. It's just wrong. THE DLC IN FORCES WAS MADE FREE BECAUSE OF HOW AWFUL IT WAS! How can you ignore that?
I didn't hate "Forces," but I definitely agree, and prefer "Superstars." Also, SS got the classic physics right, while Forces couldn't even get Classic Sonic right, and he just felt forced in for the anniversary.
For some reason you can also Fight Metal Sonic as Super Sonic and he’s the Only boss this happens with because his level isn’t even named Vs. Metal
Good video. This is actually my introduction to this channel. Honestly, this wasn't what I wanted for a new 2D Sonic game, but I was still kind of excited. I thought the price was a bit high, but I still held out hope for it. Then I got it and for a little bit, I was having fun with some of the levels. But as I got through the game, there was just more and more about it that just slowly made me really dislike the game. The auto-scrolling in some areas, the bosses, the level design in the later levels and that final zone and final boss (not THE final boss, but the basic final boss)...they're just awful. The post game stuff and multiplayer stuff are just not worth it either. This was a $40 at most kind of game. I was disappointed to the point where it made me appreciate Mania more than I used to. Mania isn't this masterpiece people make it out to be, but at least it was still good. Superstars was a big letdown. Though I find some justice in the fact that recently, more modern Sonic stuff has been doing better than classic-style stuff, since before that, Classic Sonic has been pushed so much with so many saying "classic Sonic good, modern bad", which I highly disagreed with. So it's great (in some ways) to see Classic Sonic failing recently.
A 2D modern Sonic is something I've only seen people wanting in the past year, this is what we wanted we wanted classic and modern sonic in separate games, sonic superstars had already been in development you can't just start wanting something else during development and be like "dang it Sega never listens to us!"

There was like talks in the fan base and the general consensus is that we just don't want him in modern games anymore they don't mind him as a separate branch
i think classic Sonic needs to stay we shouldn't stick to one Sonic we should appreciate what we have. and not wait 6 years.
It's funny, a lot of what was said in this video is exactly how I felt about Sonic Heroes, especially towards the end of the video.
Seeing how it's come around to being a childhood classic for many people now, it's weird to me. As a result it has me wondering what people will be saying about Superstars in 20 years. Will the young adults of today be looking at the the children who played this and loved it, when they're adults incredulously?
I thought it was alright, kinda fun to Speedrun the levels but it’s not really anything great. The Bosses were Horrendous though, completely ruined my initial experience. Glad I didn’t pay $60 for it.

At first I thought about getting this game, but after seeing what the reviews showed about it I gave up on that idea. You are so right that it's best to have Jun Senoue be doing rock music instead of music for classic Sonic games. I'm still totally impressed on how well he handeled the rock music for SA1 & SA2, especially when him and Johnny Gioeli as Crush 40, made the theme songs of those 2 games. What a musical genius he can be.
"Live and learn" is in my opinion one of the best songs that I've ever listened to, I absolutely love that one.

Arzest is actually a successor company to Artoon also founded by Naoto Ohshima in 1999.
Your play through was the same as mine. Near the end I played one or two levels then went to Mario or Spiderman. Never finished the game completely either but maybe one day I will come back. Too bad because I am a huge Sonic fan yet this isn't fun

My only gripes were Jun Senoue's music, some of the level design, and the ridiculous bosses.
How does SEGA *NOT* hear how bad Jun's songs are here? They stick out like a sore thumb next to the other composers' contributions, especially Tee Lopes. And when we battle bosses, we wanna be able to hit them repeatedly rather than suffer through this ridiculous waiting time before hits and phases.

Game was like a 7/10 for me. Normal story was super fun and great, and then trips story, and final story really was a let down for me with how tedious and annoying it was. Trips story is essentially just “Slap spikes and bottomless pits everywhere and call it Hard Mode” i just didn’t feel the love and effort put into the level design really. I actually liked Fang a lot more than the other trip bosses just cause it had a REASON to be tedious, given it was the FINAL boss of the hard mode. Other bosses were just sluggish for the sake of being sluggish. Like I swear I thought the Frozen base act 1 and Sky temple bosses were WAY more frustrating than Fang
I understand your critiques of the game. But honestly I found the game to be pretty fun! I mean my biggest complaint, which im surprised you didn't mention. Was that the boss battles were garbage! I mean the first half was alright, but imma say like after lagonn city is when the boss battles start to drag and become not fun!

14:16 Basically my thoughts after playing and dropping Sonic Frontiers after beating the game. Haven’t played Sonic Superstars yet.
I still don’t care for Mario Wonder at all for including elephant garbage. I’m interested in the Peach game though. But if you like Spider-Man games, I recommend the Attack on Titan games. It’s like more Spider-Man games and it works. The physical copies I went after are expensive so just a heads up.
Superstars-... Don't come at me, but it feels like if Sonic Origins and Super Mario Wonder fused together and became one game

I'm really liking this game so far. I bought it a few weeks ago but haven't had much of a chance to play it, from what I did play though I was impressed. Sonic Frontiers is amazing too! SEGA is back!!!!
it was on the level of sonic 3 knuckles for me, but for the modern generation cause spites = bad game to most of them. a few bug fixes it could be great make tells when bosses can be hit and a easier post game for less skilled players.
TLDR You didn’t like Superstars just because it’s a classic sonic game, not because it’s a bad game.

Its like a cut down version of sonic generations with the sonic 4 soundtrack.
Also sorry to point this out but guys if your hating on him I REALLY UNDERSTAND!! But respect that its his opinion and if you agree or don't good for you but don't make a huge deal of it also I do hope I can get the game so I wanna prove to myself that its good so ill try and I hope that one day you will find fun in this game

Wouldn’t call it a massive let down. It’s no Mania or 3&Knuckles, and the bosses are mostly trash but It’s an okay game. Level design & mechanics are pretty good & most of the levels look really great. Soundtrack is a mixed bag but the tracks it gets right are excellent. Overall it’s not the worst classic game to exist but I wouldn’t say it can contend with the best either. It’s top 4 at best.

I saw it on sale and I didn’t want to buy it because it gives me a bad feeling in my stomach. Just the thought of playing it gives me a bad feeling. I bought Super Mario Bros Wonder instead.
I enjoyed it until trip's story, i really like exploration so this was a big plus for me, and after i finished the main story which i really liked, i got into trip's story and... i suffered, i didn't felt like the game was challenging me but that the game hated me, i died so many times and it wasn't my fault and was so rageful (I'M TALKING ABOUT YOU, YOU GODDAMN WEASLE I HOPE YOU'LL DIE FANG THE FRICKING THE HUNTER) and i finally got to the true final boss amd just didn't finished it, it's super punishing and i just don't want to suffer again. I think they should kept only the original story and it would be a 9/10 for me.

I disagree with alot of the points in this video, mainly that we don't want classic sonic. The problem for me is that we DO want classic sonic, but me personally, I want my 2d sonic to be in 16 bit or higher the way mania is. There's just something so good about the spritework in the classic games that I just dont see in the 3d models of stages.

At first I actually like Sonic superstars but after playing it for a while it was like I haven't even been in the game and it's like this game is not better than any Sonic game when I started I mean Mario Wonder was better I do think Sonic Superstars is one of my favorite games this year but it's not better than Mario Wonder and releasing the game right when Mario Wonder came out that was the dumbest idea I think I could do I hope this game sells better but I don't release that game your Mario again that's the dumbest idea you've ever thought about cuz now Mario's making more money to you if you want us to pass Mario make polish games and don't release Sonic at the time where Mario is you know Mario is a juggernaut no one's bigger than Spider-Man I can't tell when but seriously Spider-Man and Mario were big Sonic you are big but you have a lot of work cut up to you if you want to make the series better than Mario your multi-platform so that's a big Advantage but you need to start making better games and not making buggy messy games and we're talking to you Sega go back with Christian Whitehead he's the best person ever he made Sonic Mania awesome I know a lot of people can agree with me I may be a Mario fan but I'm also a Sonic fan so Sega go back to Christian Whitehead for the 2 games and don't be a jerk and don't rush the game okay
Not as big of a letdown as Forces, at least the people that made Superstars tried to be experimental with the classic formula.

I actually think sonic 4 ep 1&2 are good the music I also do like the sonic superstars music as well like bridge Island act 1&2 heck even the mini boss theme but anyways I think sonic 4 is GOOD!!!

I genuinely agree, this is probably one of if not my least favorite sonic games. It looked really promising before but then after I played it, I genuinely did not have the will to beat it, not only because the level design and the music. I don’t even care that I (totally legally got it), it’s not worth $60
Wow you make some good points about why superstars sucks but then you're biased when it comes to classic Sonic just because its not modern doesn't mean a new sonic game will be bad thats like mariotehplumber logic saying that Forces and frontiers suck because it has modern sonic in it.
Honestly as a long time sonic fan since the 90s im fine with Classic sonic the game sonic superstars however is crap I grew up with the originals on Mega Drive / Genesis so I can honestly say Sonic Superstars is incredibly mediocre compared to mania and past classic games.
And yeah I would rather had preferred a new mania advance or rush game instead as SEGA never seems to get Sonic right as they keep changing their direction with the franchise and that's sad because not even ports of the old beloved games can fix the franchise when SEGA keeps half assing sonic games and rushing them out the door to make quick money.
This year alone has disappointed the Classic era the adventure era and the modern era of fans thus the typical Sonic cycle repeats no one can be happy when the sonic franchise is all over the place.

This game was important for maturation. I've been a Sonic fan since 2018, that is, I've never been disappointed with a Sonic game because not even Sonic games were released, but this year when I saw the trailer for Sonic Superstars I became interested, as my favorite Sonic game it's Sonic 3 & Knuckles and I love Classic Sonic, and the more trailers came out the more hype I was creating for the game, until October 17, 2023 when I finally got to play it, and... like it's not the worst thing in the world but my disappointment was so great that it made me realize things in the Sonic franchise that I had never noticed before, like how Sonic games are fucking poorly made, when I played Sonic Frontiers for the first time I thought it was perfect, but playing it once again I realize how this game isn't even close to being perfect and to make matters worse, 3 days later Super Mario Bros. Wonder was released, and this made me open my mind more, making me notice even more problems in Sonic games, it got to a point where I started to question whether I really like Sonic, but after 2 months of reflection I came to the conclusion that Despite all my disappointment, I don't hate Sonic Superstars, I realized that this game, despite several problems, is still good, but it's clearly not worth 60 dollars. I'm partly happy that this game disappointed me, otherwise I would still be under the illusion that Sonic games are perfect, and I believe that these games are just tests for something bigger to come, in the last 2 years Sonic is coming back with everything .

What is it with people like you coming out of the blue after Unleash's video saying "no one wants classic sonic" or "we shouldn't get anymore classic because it holds us back". What it is the problem with bringing back the past? You acting like his existence means no more or less modern sonic. How come no one complained about Dream team? It has heavy adventure inspiration, yet nobody batted an eye. There is nothing wrong with taking things from the past, as long as it is built upon. Mania did that, Frontiers did that, Dream Team did that, and so did Superstars. Just say "I don't want this, I want Rush/Advance". There is nothing wrong with wanting that, but saying that nobody wanted this, and that it's bad because of such is not fine. People want Classic sonic, and you have to deal with that.

Here's the thing: the game was really targeted to family's. Just look at the promotional material for this game! It's really light hearted and fun. This wasn't really a game for die-hard fans. It was nominated for best family game at TGA and the coop and level design are really watered down. This game is actually fun if you play it with friends!
