Alcohol is a friend of every occasion and just like most countries in the world, it is also a huge part of ours.
"Homemade alcohol takes me back to childhood when I used to steal and snack on fermented millet that was supposed to be used for making raksi (alcohol)." Mina
Nepalese make alcohol from grains, rice and even apples. The strength of the alcohol can vary anywhere between 12% to over 40%.
"Bhatti" is a small, cheap bar where you can get homemade alcohol and also side dishes (often fried/grilled meat dishes) that go well with it. Visiting a bhatti is probably the most authentic and traditional bar experience if you ever visit Nepal.

Yes you can make chhyang at your kitchen without any big equipment. Just ferment the rice with yeast and leave it for 2-3 days in a covered pot. Then you'll get the fermented rice (called bhaap) which is then mixed with water, then drink the liquid part like wine (chhyang) or all of them like a beer.

thank you for your comment. No offence taken. We believe it has its origin in many tribes. Meri grew up with and went to a Tibetan school and Mina grew up with Rai, Limbu friends so our sources are pretty solid. In hindsight, we should have elaborated that it's not only limited to the Sherpa community.
@@sinerjistudio5302 Tongba is literally a Limbu word. Other Himalayan communities starting serving Tongba because it became popular. Sherpas started started learning about Tongba after they started migrating towards Eastern Nepal in places where the Kirati community are densely populated aka Limbuwan. Eastern Nepal literally has a Tongba chowk. Your sources are not solid. The Tibetans drink Chhang.
