  • I'm not generally a fan of "American things" and it bugs me that CZcams, presumably because they're an American company don't accommodate videos in the European standard of 576 lines/pixels (625 in old money). So we have to make do with the inferior 480 option for this presentation of a high quality copy of the 1980s HTV Start-up films.
These were given to me over a decade ago by a great chap who worked at HTV, together with a load of other idents and promos which I used as the basis for a website about ITV in Wales and the West.
The West film isn't too bad and has a reasonable spread of locations but the Wales one is awful. Any rhythm that is established at the start fizzles out about half way through and there's a general feeling that whoever put it together just wants to get to the end of it. The pace falters, the last few shots go on forever and the final two images are a freeze frame of a shot that occurred earlier in the film and a badly taken still of a dull statue.
All a bit of a let down really, particularly for a national broadcaster. Neither of the films match the magnificence of the start-up film that tiny Westward broadcast at the start of each day in the 70s. And they used 35mm too.
In comparison, these HTV films feel washed-up, downbeat and downtrodden. A bit like Wales in the 80s I suppose. Thank you Thatcher.
The music is by Robert Howes.
