Mr Sunak has today declared UK inflation is “back to normal” in a “major milestone” for the country, as it hit its lowest level in nearly three years despite falling by less than economists were expecting.
Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation slowed to 2.3 per cent in April, down from 3.2 per cent in March, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
It is the lowest level since July 2021 when inflation was recorded at 2 per cent - the Bank of England’s target level.
But the decline was smaller than expected as economists had predicted CPI would fall to 2.1 per cent in April, within a whisker of the Bank’s target.
Speaking in Downing Street, the prime minister said the fall in inflation is a “major milestone”, but he admitted there is “more work to do”.
“That is an important moment for our country, for the economy, and shows that our plan is working,” Mr Sunak said.

@@SafWho Yeah that's my point, either the CPI won't fall in the coming months with inflation, or the CPI does fall but the prices still remain the same. Either way the corporations greed will continue
Throughout history prices just kept rising this is why the penny has no value for a single product now yet 50yrs ago you could purchase a bunch of sweets for less than a penny. Income has also risen so is what needs to rise not prices fall back to what they were before

Graig is my local MP. I used to live behind his home in Ramsgate and saw him and his family often. He is a lovely man and a great MP. He would always stop and speak about the most mundane to important matters that were of interest to me. I am so sad to see him in this condition but his upbeat mood is a testament to who he is and the vigour he brought to his constituents. Wishing him and his family all the best for the future.
