  • On a mission to plant a seed of curiosity, Leah Ochs discusses the advantages of being a female in the male-dominated industry of aviation, and the relatively overlooked benefits of obtaining a pilot license as a young woman. Leah Ochs is a STEM professional working in the Aerospace and Defense industry as a Manufacturing Engineer. She holds a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Nevada, Reno. An aviation enthusiast, Leah has a private pilot license and is highly active in the community helping to raise money for local flying scholarships and working to build the local general aviation community. A strong advocate for STEM education, Leah founded a nonprofit, Gearing Up 4 STEM, with a mission to create easily accessible resources for STEM educators in Northern Nevada. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    Great talk, Leah! Too many people focus in on why there are so few women... not on why women SHOULD fly! I didn't start flying until right after graduating college with a BFA in graphic design, had no thoughts of a career (there actually weren't ANY female airline pilots then!) but got so hooked, I blew off the art and flew everything I could find (including single-engine Cessna 150's! across the Atlantic!) to build my flight time... fast forward and I retired from Northwest Airlines/Delta after captaining 747's and Airbus A330s all over the globe!
    That mystical euphoria of leaving the ground with your own hands on the stick changed my entire life! Thanks for your words!

    Very inspiring even to a 53 year old male working on a sports pilots lic. And I think it’s great thing for ladies to become pilots! The aviation community is wonderful and I found some of the most encouraging people! Awesome speech!

    I listened to your podcast appearance on Pilot to Pilot. It's crazy how much prep you had to do for the TED Talk. Nice job. I also enjoyed the story about the turbulence and the hot start woes. Being a pilot is a humbling experience a lot of times, but somehow you're always looking forward to your next flight. I think what you're doing to shine a light on women in aviation is a great thing and needed. Keep at it.

    Wow Leah! Thank you SO much for sharing your passion for flying. I was there that weekend at HSF and I am now, more so even than bsck then, itching to get up in the air. As you were talking I felt the "goosebumps" when you talked about freedom! I want that... no, I NEED that freedom. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart for helping me feel confident in taking advantage of my minority status and getting my pilots license!!

    This suggestion was impeccably timed. I watched a movie in January and had to leave the theatre to make a memo to look into flight school because some scenes were overwhelmingly cathartic. Nothing to do with planes, but I realized I wanted to fly- not die. I did, but put it on the back burner to finish some other pending tasks, projects, and obligations before properly pursuing my newer big ones. My soul was already charged with the idea, so I will keep this message in mind. Godspeed & thank you! 🎼 ✈️ 🎻 📝 🧬 ✍🏽

    Great video thanks for highlighting that amazing weekend. I was also on that lakebed that day and remember telling my buddies how cool it is to see women out there racing side by side with the boys. That night around the bonfire when Kevin / Cory Award Nat with $2000 💵 was an awesome moment in aviation to see first hand for women in the aviation gaining respect as a fellow aviator. I shared this Video with my 14 year old daughter so we will see what happens next 👍👍👍

    “Use your minority status to your advantage?” Whatever happened to hiring safe qualified individuals regardless of race, color, or gender? Sounds like discrimination to me. Discriminating men in favor of women who have some advantage because of the fact of being born a woman.

      Big facts, this industry is cyclical. You become a pilot because you want to fly. I'm tired hearing all this "we need more women pilots", pilot shortage". Tell that to the furloughed pilots or about to be who are bitting thier nails on how they're going to pay the bills .Utter bs, what we need is airlines getting thier $hit together when hard times come.

      @@billrussell4832 Take 100% of the turnover away from any company for a prolonged period and see how long it survives - my guess is, not long. No matter how many billions airlines save, no company can reliably prepare for this eventuality. They'd have to save too much and invest too little to remain relevant in the market.

    There is NO SUCH THING as a pilot license.....ITS A CERTIFICATE.

    • @GuruMN
      @GuruMN Před 4 lety

      This is true, but despite how it's called by a regulatory body, it's effectively the same. Both a pilot certificate and driver's license are revocable, have specific privileges, medical requirements (each to a different degree), and a pile of rules. It's similar to holding a sectional chart and calling it a map.
