- On June 17, 1940, in the midst of the collapse of the French armies, Charles De Gaulle, an obscure Brigadier General promoted from June 6 to Under Secretary of State for War, was received by Churchill and learned that Marshal Pétain had just called for stop fighting and ask Hitler for the terms of an armistice. De Gaulle expresses to the English Prime Minister his desire to speak to the BBC, Churchill authorizes it. The day after June 18 at 10 p.m., the general launched his call for resistance.

J'ai 75 ans, mon père et un de mes beaux frères ont suivi de Gaulle dans la résistance. Quel grand homme qui, actuellement, doit se retourner dans sa tombe... Merci pour ce très beau film !!!

This is really an amazing movie. Shows how France fell so quickly under the German Blitzkrieg. However De Gaulle, with the help of the English, kept the spirit of resistance alive. And so... Vive La France!

possibly. the worry, I suspect was that certain French leaders pre-emptively sold out to the Nazi cause, of course, the French thought they were alone, and may have been overwhelmed by the desire to live rather than die in the sort of war Hitler had in mind.

The french people have experimented the horrors of the first world war about 20 years earlier. I think it was perfectly understandable for some French leaders to have their country avoid being involved in another major war. I don't say they were right to do so but it was a normal human reaction to do so.
@@clauderanger375 L'armé Française n'était surtout pas prête pour un conflit majeur. Des carences majeures en aviation et une utilisation tactique de l'arme blindée complètement dépassée. De plus la guerre est un art , pas une science , et il faut aussi de la chance. L'Allemagne fait passer son armée à travers les Ardennes , ce fut un pari des plus risqué , mais ils ont réussi.
J'ai bientôt 68ans et je ne peux m'empêcher de pleurer d'émotions en pensant à la souffrance des miens durant cette guerre

This film is truly wonderful. demonstrates how the German Blitzkrieg caused France to fall so fast. De Gaulle, however, maintained the resistance spirit with the aid of the English.

L'acteur de Churchill, je pense qu'il est le meilleur que j'ai jamais vu. Maintenant, j'apprends qu'il est décédé il y a 2 semaines. Je n'arrête pas de répéter son rôle, parce que c'est mémorable. Reposez en paix!

Par ailleurs ,De Gaulle s'est bien frité avec les troupes allemandes à Montcornet et les a même stoppé un moment avant de devoir se replier pour cause d'encerclement et de repli général ..
Sans être Gaulliste une seconde , ce type est arrivé à London avec sa P...et son couteau et son rôle fût surtout au départ, étant dépourvu de TOUT, de tenter de rameuter les forces restantes disposées à se fighter aux côtés des anglais ,en faisant appel à la marine intacte et les forces aériennes survivantes...
De Gaulle s'est fait choper en 1916 ...Il a donc combattu également .Les frisés ne l'ont pas fait aux pattes dans sa chaumière !!

ce film est effectivement un très bon moovie et correspond ,de fait, aux mémoires du "Général". C'est juste un fait historique !
De Gaulle, qu'on l'aime ou non, n'est pas du tout la question !
Il se montre juste ,dans ces moments de débâcle et de désastre( et il ne faut pas oublier qu'il a été fait prisonnier en 1916 ), très fort moralement et l'interprêtation de l'acteur le campant, fait admirablement transpirer cet effet, voilà tout.
les acteurs sont effectivement très bons et....
La personne , ci dessus, parle exclusivement de l'excellent boulot ...du réalisateur !!

Le personnage qui campe Churchill est époustouflant (Que vient foutre Macron dans cette analyse purement cinématographique ?)
Si on lit objectivement les mémoires de guerre de De Gaulle, cela s'est effectivement passé comme ce film nous le dépeint .
Et par conséquent, historiquement ,lorsqu'on voit ce film , on ne peut qu'être touché par la qualité de la réalisation .
Ce n'est pas une idôlatrie du personnage en question .
Les relations entre de Gaulle et Churchill n'ont pas toujours été faciles.
Churchill disait: " Chaque homme porte sa croix, moi c'est une croix de Lorraine et Dieu qu'elle est lourde".
Relations between de Gaulle and Churchill were not always easy.
Churchill said: “Each man carries his cross, for me it is a cross of Lorraine and God it is heavy”.
Making this into a commercial movie, instead of a documentary, made the subject more relatable and watchable. An amazing part of history that I wasn't aware of - until now.

I read everything I could as a kid in the late 60's on WW II. Mother lived thru Hitler Era in Germany & Poland. Came to America in 1953. Just passed at 96. She had many stories and photos. Should be required class in school.

I liked a lot Mr. Samuel Labarthe impersonating le GENERAL DE GAULLE for his entire career....I also enjoy watching this very good french actor!
A very well done movie with solid acting that tells the tale of a very difficult time for France. While I was aware of the Vichy government, I had no idea General DeGaulle was held in such contempt by Marshall Petain. This film delves into these relationships in a way that makes me want to learn more about the early days of WWII in Europe.
Pre WW2 years was the beginning of a collision between fascism and communism mostly caused by the conservatives of society being rightfully afraid that the upheaval of societal balance in Russia would be exported to their countries which in fact the soviets planned on doing. So when the fascists came along it was an easy appeal to anyone who rightfully recognized the dangers of communism. In truth both system were horrible and involved murderous tyranny willing to hinder their plans
De Gaulle and Petain used to be ok with each other but Petain for some reason made a focus around defense (can be good in some way) but did not fully prepare the attack, was against the idea of a full division of tanks ( i think france had only 3 of them, the rest was with the infantry and often holding a position). De Gaulle and some general did not understand why and oposed this vision, but De Gaulle was know to not back down event if Petain was a Marechal or a highly decorated soldier. Because of this vision and the idea of preparing a war vs not wanting another war.
Petain had probably some "ptsd" of the ww1 like a lot of people, he was getting old but still being a prone figure for soldier and citizen of France and a Marechal it's not acceptable to not continue the war.

This followed a reduction in credits by the government (which Pétain warned about in 1922). Because basically, Pétain wanted to reorganize the army by asking the government for 6,000 light tanks and 435 heavy tanks “constituted into an autonomous weapon” (December 1918).

De Gaulle aspired to play a political role in France in June 1940 but the horizon was blocked by Pétain with whom he had been confused for years, so that he had nothing to hope for in France, hence his decision to leave her. De Gaulle later privately admitted that Pétain had no choice but to ask for the armistice after Chuchill’s decision to withdraw the English air force from France leaving the Germans control of the sky and Churchill’s refusal to send back to France, the troops evacuated to Dunkirk to hold on to the Aisne-Somme line set up initially with some success by General Weygand, but for De Gaulle aspiring to secure the future, it is therefore a question of positioning oneself in opposition to the decision of Pétain especially since he is no longer in business and therefore does not have to worry about the fate of the French population. The departure for London is a poker shot by De Gaulle who could have turned to his disadvantage by making him play the puppet role of Churchill if he had not had two lucky shots.
-The rallying in August 1940 of the governor of French equatorial Africa, Felix Eboué allowing free France to have a territory, colonial troops and raw materials essential to the British war effort, whose role will grow after the Japanese conquest of Dutch Indonesia, so that the British become dependent on the raw materials produced by the French Gaullist equatorial Africa and the weight of the Dutch government at first greater than De Gaulle in 1940 will go down while that of De Gaulle .
-Pétain’s decision in November 1942 not to fly to Algiers after the violation of the armistice agreement by the Germans who invaded the unoccupied area of France after the Anglo-American invasion of North Africa. This is the decisive turning point because many French officials and soldiers who previously obeyed Pétain do not understand this decision of Pétain to stay in France and not to resume the fight in North Africa. The French army of North Africa until then faithful to Pétain will gradually join General Giraud then De Gaulle including the generals De Lattre de Tassigny and June. Especially since De Gaulle will murder in December 1942 the "Admiral Darlan dauphin of Marshal Pétain thus depriving the English and Americans of an interlocutor of the Vichy regime which could have thwarted the plans of De Gaulle.Thus, paradoxically from November 1942, Metropolitan France being entirely occupied by the Germans and Italians and the French colonial empire in Africa having completely switched to De Gaulle, it is De Gaulle who de facto becomes the leader of France since he alone now has an independent territory and its resources and population. De Gaulle was well aware of this change of November 1942 because he later confessed to Colonel Rémy "If Pétain had joined Algiers in November 1942, I no longer existed politically and militarily, Roosevelt and Churchill would have dealt with him and he could have triumphed back on his white horse in Paris at liberation in 1944".

Whether one has read Churchill or DeGaulle's memoirs, this film is more than adequate in bringing to us the key events of those dramatic days. Though Churchill has been cast in many films, I really found they nailed his character with this one. In the words of the revered American journalist C.L. Sultzberger; "Churchill had the qualities of a poet and a pirate; I can ask no better mixture. It is men who influence history by their will; and DeGaulle and Churchill have confirmed this view".
It was thrilling to see General Spears cast with them throughout this drama. This man was a vital link through 2 world wars as the Franco-British liason officer and went on to write some great books afterwards. As emphasized in the film, the British demands that DeGaulle show emotional discretion during his vocal appeal on the BBC was met. However if he could have been able to pour forth from the very depths of his soul what he really wanted to say, it would have sounded more like Garibaldi's famous pledge; "I offer hunger, thirst, forced marches, battles and death. Let him who loves his country in his heart and not with his lips only, follow me"
Absolutely, - Christian Rodska is excellant as Churchill,brings his irascible character to life,I did not recognise the actor remembering him from early seventies productions. The actor playing De Gaule is excellant also.
Not an easy character to nail. The General comes across not unlike The Prime Minister irascible on first approach but in reality quite humerous.

Les hommes qui font l’histoire victorieuse : Intuition, courage, résolution et détermination. Même s'il faut parfois mettre un peu d'eau dans la Whisky . Ah si on avait des politiques de cette trempe au gouvernement d'aujourd'hui !
De Gaulle avait la France dans la peau 🇫🇷 lui pensé d abord aux biens être des Françaises et Français d ailleurs aujourd'hui en 2023 nous sommes toujours sous la 5 ÈME République qui à crées avec debret......... Les français était fière d être français c est pour ça que j ai vue dans un autre reportage beaucoup de jeunes de 17-18 ans rejointre le Général De Gaulle après sont apel aux Français de le rejointre à londre.

De Gaulle aimait la France mais les gens ne l’intéressait pas.
Il était humainement mesquin, cassant et imbuvable. Il n'avait pas d'amis et son passe temps était de jouer au "solitaire"... Tellement injuste et méprisant qu'aucun officier qui l'a connu avant et pendant mai-juin40 n'a voulu le rejoindre a Londres.
Un aumônier de la 4eDCr, homme de Dieu qui soulage les âmes recueille la parole et réconforte (donc quelqu'un de sensible et qui pèse ses mots) a même dit qu'il était "inhumain dans sa dureté, presque méchant."
J'ai pris des notes dans 3 ouvrages sur les témoignages rapportés de ses mauvaises relations avec les hommes et j'ai déjà 10 cas précis. Comme humilier un officier supérieur devant ses soldats ou accuser de lâcheté un capitaine qui est allé se faire casser la figure par les allemands sur son ordre et sous ses yeux.
Voila, on peut admirer un grand homme pour son action, mais l'idéaliser c'est falsifier l'Histoire

C'est Passionnant ! De bout en bout !! Je pensais trouver un film, gentil nanard par exemple, mais ce film est une exceptionnelle réussite, et de plus, probablement un des rares qui aborde la WW2 sur se sujet. Bravo, bravo, bravo !
