It’s almost like grappling is so much easier when you’re not getting punched in the face

    • @mattyc7
      @mattyc7 Před 3 lety +126

"Easier" isn't quite the right description, but deffintely very different. So all the time spent on in depth counters to counters to counters in grappling is largely wasted when time would have been better spent mastering a single escape/sweep.
If you've ever grappled with good MMA guys they typically have a much smaller library of grappling techniques that they have drilled the shit out of.

@@mattyc7 Karo Parisyan published a book on Judo For MMA, and he absolutely pushes for drilling the crap out of a small number of techniques instead of trying to cast a wide net. When he first started training BJJ submissions for MMA, his coach had him do nothing but triangle chokes for weeks on end. They'd start him standing, on his back, on the other guy's back, etc etc and say, "Find the triangle from here." Better to know a thousand ways to apply one technique than a thousand techniques only applied one way.

Toney hadn't been a 'world class athlete' in about 10 years before he fought Couture, and even in his middleweight prime he was known for drinking coca cola between rounds in sparring and eating burgers in training, bizarre choice, the fat mess who fought Couture wasn't world class athlete Toney

and would retire a fight later, or like Toney had a big weight advantage or anything.
They even started the fight on the ground, which was this kid Couture's favorite place.

Rulon Gardner did well against Yoshida, in a battle of Olympic gold medalists (wrestling vs judo).
He went to Team Quest and they designed a game plan for him: don't use your wrestling fool, and box the judoka! You have longer reach, use that.
An Olympic Judo Gold medalist (In Atlanta in 1996) who did great in MMA is Pawel Nastula.
Well, his record isn't exactly spotless but PRIDE threw him to the lions immediately.
His first MMA bout was against Rodrigo Nogueira, who was the number 2 HW at the time, only second to Fedor.
And Nastula did surprisingly well, it was one of the first events I'd watched live, and the Polish Judoka really got me hooked.
After losing that first fight against Big Nog, since he put on a vailliant effort PRIDE rewarded him by having him fight former UFC HW champ Josh Barnett, and then Sambo world champion Aleksander Emelianenko.
Poor Nastula was outmatched, but still did his best in those fights; he especially did good against Barnett, considering the insane difference in experience.
Nastula then fought another wrestling gold medalist, I forgot his name: time for some google-fu: *Andrzej Wroński*
Andrzej Adam Wroński (born October 8, 1965 in Kartuzy, Pomorskie) is a Polish wrestler (Greco-Roman style) who has won two Olympic gold medals (1988 Seoul, 1996 Atlanta, the same one Nastula won in Judo!)
Anyway, he had only one MMA bout, and that was a loss to Pawel Nastula in Poland back in 2011.
Google him if you must, that guy's accomplishements are insane!
You can also find the fight between him and Nastula on youtube.

You guys should do like a "10 hardest things for non-MMA fans to understand" or "10 hardest things to explain to non-fans". Something along those lines, just generally speaking events and concepts of MMA we find normal but non-fans would find very odd or unnatural or just generally hard to concieve

An extra name I could add, sadly it's an athlete from my country. Egyptian Greco-Roman wrestler and Olympic gold medalist Karam Ibrahim Gaber who had one MMA bout at 2004's K-1 PREMIUM 2004 Dynamite!!, unfortunately his opponent was a prime "Ironhead" Kazuyuki Fujita. Gaber had some decent offense at first but had no defense, which left him open for a punch from Fujita resulting in a RD.1 KO loss.
