  • Rob Greenfield’s "How to Grow Garlic in the Subtropics" Blog Post Here - robgreenfield.tv/floridagarlic/
    Many Florida gardeners & farmers have failed at successfully growing bulbed garlic heads. There is undoubtedly an appropriate climate for garlic, which prefers extended low temperatures - so here in this clip, our new friend Rob Greenfield gives us some insight on his vernalization method of refrigerating the seed bulbs in his refrigerator to simulate the weeks of brisk weather needed to reach its full vitality.
    We mention that we learned about Rob’s garlic success & trials through the Tampa Bay Plant Swap group. If you wanted to learn more about the garlic trials in Floria, check it out here -
    If you missed the previous 2 Part Series with Rob Greenfield:
    Growing & Foraging 100% of His Food WITHOUT LAND OF HIS OWN: 1-Year Challenge w/ Rob Greenfield - Part 1 - • Growing & Foraging 100...
    He Has To Grow Or Forage Everything He Eats For 1 Year! - Part 2 - • Growing & Foraging 100...
    As a ‘beginner” gardener, Rob Greenfield has challenged himself to grow & forage 100% of his food without his own land and without any previous experience of growing food. If that’s not impressive enough, Rob Greenfield is also living in a 100 sq ft. A tiny home with minimal storage, growing his daily needs in other people’s front yards & gleaning from the fruit trees he planted around Orlando in the short amount of time he has been there. He does this for a big reason - to inspire the rest of us to put a bit more effort into self-resiliency, community interaction & eco-literacy.
    Rob Greenfield is undoubtedly at the top of the list when it comes to influential people & we know that this 2-part video will be sure to inspire you with it’s “priceless” advice. Best chances are that you’ve already seen his super smart publicity projects that shed light on dire situations & highlight the brilliant solutions to the problems we are facing globally. Trying to describe Rob’s work here in a short bio does him a significant injustice, so to get a better idea of who this environmental activist & humanitarian is & what he’s doing, check it out over at - robgreenfield.tv

      Hello, I hit Rob's link and it came up with a warning about the site, said it wasn't safe! I was trying to find out if Rob is in the same area of Florida, as I am? I'm on the east coast by New Smyrna Bch. I moved to Florida 23 years ago from Ma and Vt area, so I went from one extreme to another! I had a huge garden up north but not so much here in Fl. What part of Florida is Rob in?

    those little garlics at the base of the elephant garlic is called a Corm. You can plant them and next year you'll get a single really large "round" which you can eat, or if you wait and plant it again it will become an elephant garlic head. Elephant garlic is actually a lilly which is why it grows better in warmer climates.

    ROB is a total doll! I am in North Central FL and have grown garlic for years, always chastising myself because the heads were small-ish, had no idea it wasn't that easy for Florida gardeners. I never purchased seed garlic, used only what I bought from Florida organic produce and it always worked fine. Only one year did I get scapes, I think that is more of a cold climate variety??? Anyway I am about to harvest 85 more stalks, I already did 30 and they varied from a few single onion looking thingies (planted late) and nice full smallish heads that I waited too long to harvest, so the cloves are separating. Thanks SO much, visiting your blog Rob, right now!

    I live in central Florida and growing garlic too. I vernalized for 3 months before planting, I also bought from Forever Young farm and got solid bulbs from Red Toch and Shilla varieties. I made garlic pesto with the whole garlic plants that didn’t bulb. I saved the biggest bulbs for planting this fall. Another tip is to plant in fall in full sun and fertilize once a month.

    Cool. I'm in north east Texas and started putting my garlic in the fridge to vernalize about 5 weeks and it does make a huge difference. The baby cloves on the outside of the bulb are corms. If you replant them, they grow the same way as the bulbils off the top in that they produce a round, like an onion with no cloves the first year and then bulb out into cloves the second year.

    well done! Being raised in S Florida, our growing season is almost reversed from the more northern states. However, I'm now living in S Carolina (the Upstate area), and I too plant my garlic in October, harvest in June. My first 'crop' was garlic from the grocery store. Just separated the cloves, put them in the ground and harvested 8 months later. I was quite pleased with that harvest! I have my 3rd crop in the ground waiting for June to harvest. I didn't realize the greens were useful, so thank you for that! I dry a fair amount of items, and so will be drying the greens this time as well. I'm loving Rob's "year of growing my food" videos. Thank you!

    biologically speaking the elephant garlic isn't an actual garlic. also you aren't supposed to mix different garlic varieties in the same path because that way they turn into one variety, you have to keep them separate. considering planting them in raised beds with better drainage and provide a plastic roofing with open sides for controlling the moisture in your subtropical climate. cheers

    Bro spread the word ( please and thank you) to rob that those small independent bulbs slash cloves are referred to as bulbils basically small bulbs which can act as seed though in actuality its a form of vegetative cloneing but the positive thing is planting the bulbils produces a rejuvenated seed stock which is great to bring about every so often however it is a 2 year process or multiple step process as one will notice the pitiful size of the resulting bulbs grown from the bulbils which is why next planting time for garlic pop those pitiful sized bulbs into the soil to grow another season gaining size so yes after 2 season you shall see full sized garlic ( if grown properly an momma nature doesn't prevent it )

    Some of my favorite ways to preserve garlic are to mince and mix with a bit of preferred oil, then freeze in ice cube trays and transfer to baggies. I do some in olive oil and some in coconut oil for different cuisines. I also love to make black garlic in my old rice cooker. It's shelf stable, so doesn't need refrigeration. Tastes like candy. It didn’t have bulbs. I’m not sure if I wait if they’ll start to bulb. Or hoped at least produce the famous scapes. I never placed it in the refrigerator for nine weeks because I never found information for growing it in the south. I placed it back into the ground, I guess all I can do now is wait.

Tell me, am I wrong to think the UV index is consistently higher than avg this year, if anyone knows about that... but at the same time it has been very moderate otherwise so far this year in 10a west gulfcoast FL. What does the summer hold!

    I always told the kids watch out for elephants around the elephant garlic.......... I actually found it keeps better in heat than ordinary garlic, especially the little chips that form on the side. Save small unsegmented rounds of elephant garlic for replanting, you will get giant cloves.

    storage, try lining a hole in the ground with bricks or cement blocks. Finnish with and a wood top with weights on to keep critters out. i think the braid should not have the bulbs touching, its more of a french braid , but im not sure. i bet there is garlic braiding on you tube. if you hang them in the hole on a dowel i think they'll be fine. i dont even know if animals and insects like them.

  • @quintyoung
    @quintyoung Před 4 lety

    I know this video is 4 months old, but I just thought I'd add that garlic sleeps when it's warm. The hotter it is, the harder it sleeps. Cold actually triggers it to grow. Your garlic is not going to sprout in your hot little house with no AC. You can put it somewhere that it won't dry completely out, it'll sleep there just fine. I live in North Florida, and I keep my garlic in a fairly warm utility room that just gets a little AC from the house. Probably 80°. It sleeps there just fine, sometimes more than 2 years and it's still usable, but at the end of the two years it's getting close to going bad so I tend to plant it if it's lasted that long. I grow soft neck garlic in Florida, I typically get some organic garlic from the grocery store for seed. I like to find the ones that have a little bit of purple on their dried skins, I find they do better.

      We made a all about growing garlic video. He stores it in in the refrigerator...

    • @quintyoung
      @quintyoung Před 4 lety

      @@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL yes I think if you didn't have at least a little bit of air conditioning, to keep it dry, that might be a good idea. I stored it on my carport one time with no AC, and it dried out pretty bad over the summer. I just know that my garlic, typically will start to sprout whenever it cools off. Even whenever it cools off into the sixties, the garlic in my utility room will begin to want to sprout so I'm afraid if I put it in the refrigerator it would really trigger it to sprout. I may throw a few in there just to see for curiosity's sake. Thanks for your reply.

      He says in the video plant in November and harvest when ready, the leaves will let you know. Here in North Central that is what I do, I use garlic from the organic produce dept. but next year I am going to buy seed garlic. Go to his blog listed above under MORE, its amazingly detailed.
