I would add a tiny fact Hazel wood is renowned as just about the best wood when dry to be used as the drill in a hand drill fire kit. :-)
Wow, this video was do exactly what I needed to get things started. I'm an gardener in the UK, and while out foraging today I took a load of hazelnut/cobnut clusters with plenty of suckers. I came home with 21 that I was able to pot up. Sadly I don't have space to do something large scale like this, but I do now have stock for my future guerilla gardening adventures!
Great video. I liked how the various seasons were shown along with plant progress. Must have taken a lot of waiting to produce this offering.

Wonderful video. My question is when growing hazel trees for nuts, how do you keep the squirrels from getting the nuts before you harvest them? Do you not have a problem, Dale, with squirrels emptying the trees simply because you have so many trees and so much fruit that they can't eat it all? What about when growing small scale? Is it an idea to put 'collars' around the trunks to stop squirrels climbing and plant trees far enough apart to stop squirrels jumping from tree to tree?
For the small grower, once the squirrels, chipmunks, and blue jays find the nuts they will take them all before they are mature enough to pick. Putting a collar around the base tall enough to keep squirrels from climbing is not an option for me as I let them grow multi-stem....not a single trunk. Also the barrier would have to be 40-48" tall. (squirrels can jump that high). My remedy is rat traps for chipmunks and live traps for squirrels, baited with corn.
But that does not prevent the blue jay problem. The blue jays will feed on them from 8 am to 8pm and take them all. I Consider myself a small grower too and for the first few years was disappointed to find my trees stripped bare.
For the blue jay problem I tried putting out a bait pile of corn, peanuts, and sunflower seeds a distance away from my hazels to try to lure them away. But they preferred the hazels. Nets do not work. Chasing with flailing arms does not work. Also fake owls and radios and ribbons and shiny twirling objects hanging from the trees do not work for more than a day. My remedy for the blue jays is a shotgun.
Know that I do not enjoy shooting the blue jays. And I don't want to hear any criticism from anyone reading this and thinking me a monster. Those who would criticize would have no problem trapping (and killing) a mouse in their pantry and also probably enjoy their burgers and chicken wings at the expense of another living thing.

Super video and to the point...not sure why I waited so long to look for information...now going on 70 and wanting to expand the number of hazelnut trees we have on property. We actually have three hazelnut bushes and two filbert trees, but the filbert have never produced. You mention shipping two types for pollination...is this an absolute need? If so, I guess I need to get an order to you....your variety should grow well here in Tennessee as I have heard some are not very cold tolerant.

Hey Dale. How are you? I am from Turkey. Turkey produces 75-80 percent of world hazelnuts (filbert). If you wanna get the quality hazelnuts you should come to Northern Turkey, Ordu and Giresun Provinces. Our hazelnuts are rich in oil(almost 70 percent) and tastier than any other ones. We harvest it on August (probably second week) so our trees are not good for snowy climates. Come see our trees or get some Turkish hazelnuts from online markets

You may be right but North America is developing an industry because Turkey won't be able to supply the demand in the future.
We’ve taken over a property that has lots of hazelnut shrub on it. The shrubs are probably 20-30 years old and 20-odd feet tall. They were never pruned or shaped. The cropping seem to be on alternate years for some reason. A lot of the wood seems very brittle and bent over. Should I be cutting the old-looking wood down, and give the the new growth underneath a chance? How much cutting is recommended ?

In your video of the seed beds the nuts appear to be in the husk, but it's hard to tell - do you actually plant them this way? I would like to plant mine in the husks if it works.
They may be planted with or without the husk. But, either way, they need the cold stratification period before germinating. Here in Michigan, that is not a problem when planted in the fall.

I need to trim a tree and I think it is a hazelnut 99% it is. The previous owner planted it as I believe to be a decorative tree. How can I prune it and when?

Some people trim the suckers to leave one "trunk". This is never-ending and they produce less nuts.
They grow naturally as a multi-stemmed bush and I let them grow that way.
Well 8 years later all my hazelnut bushes are at full getting lot of nuts

I watched a few videos now to find out one piece of information and its never mentioned. For a good yield do you coppice or do you prune out older brances or treat as a tree?
Your choice. I leave some as a bush and trim back others as a tree. Bush produces more

Yes, they would thrive in the UP. Hazels are one of the most cold hardy and soil tolerant plants there are.

great video..I want to grow hazelnut plant from seed I have chilled it for 3 month in refrigerator and then put it for 5 days in room temperature and soaked it n water according to the info I searched on Google but my seed is not gonna grow seedling like stubborn . plz help what should i do with it
If you purchased your hazelnuts in a supermarket or fruit market, they are processed before they are sold to the public for food. That means that the seeds you buy at the store are killed so that they will not germinate in the store.

Why do americas show such contempt for soils by calling it dirt
I have not taken a survey of what we in "the americas" call dirt. I grew up on a farm and called it dirt because that's what it is and feel no contempt for the earth by calling it that. Do you have any meaningful comments?
