  • Welcome to #Ancona,the regional capital of #LeMarche !
Our visit will start from the breathtaking #MonteConero, is 572 metres high and it is the only coastal high point on the Adriatic sea between Trieste and the Gargano (the name Conero comes from the Greek name Κόμαρος and indicates the strawberry tree which is common on the slopes of the mountain). Then following the costal line we'd see the naturally beautiful and unique beaches of the mount till arrive at the foot of the #WarMemorial that links the city and the see. From here, the main street will lead us to #PiazzaCavour before visiting the #ParcodelCardeto and the Ancona's lighthouse on top. Following the edge, we'll arrive to the #RomanAmphitheatre, builded in a stratigic place but forgotten for many centuries. Then moving toward the center, we'll arrive to the Catholic church of #SaintDomenico on top of the main square of the city: #PiazzadelPlebiscito. From here we'll arrive to #PiazzadellaRepubblica where we could admire the #TeatrodelleMuse. At this point, following the port's main road, we'll see another historical landmark: the #PortaPia, just in front of the beautiful #LazzarettoofAncona (also called the #MoleVanvitelliana, is a pentagonal 18th-century building built on an artificial island as a quarantine station and leprosarium for the port town of Ancona), was commissioned by #PopeClementXII, designed by the architect #LuigiVanvitelli, and built from 1733−1743. It originally had no land link to the mainland. Crossing the port, we'll arrive to the #ArcoClementino and the the #ArchofTrajan, a Roman triumphal arch erected by the Senate and people of Rome in the reign of Emperor Trajan. It was built in honour of that Emperor after he expanded the port of the city out of his own pocket, improving the docks and the fortifications. It was from here that Trajan departed for the ultimately successful war against the Dacians, an episode which is commemorated in the bas relief of Trajan's column in Rome. The arch was the work of the Roman, a Greek Syrian architect Apollodorus of Damascus, born in Roman Syria. it was the Rome's greatest Adriatic port. Our visit will end from the incredible view of the Ancona's Cathedral dedicated to #SaintCyriacus of Ancona. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Ancona. The building is an example of mixed Romanesque-Byzantine and Gothic elements, and stands on the site of the former acropolis of the Greek city, the Guasco hill which overlooks Ancona and its gulf.
