- The prototype robot created by Dr. Light that was supposed to be the turning point in robotics, Protoman is a robot designed for fighting. As a prototype, Protoman is incomplete and has an unstable reactor core in his body that could blow at any minute. He resents the fact that he was activated before being completed and has run off from the rest of his family, watching over them in the shadows and helping out whenever necessary.
... and I hate the way he talks in this game. It's not so much a problem with the voice as it is a problem with the delivery in his lines. Aside from anger, he displays no other emotions and only has two topics he likes to discuss; the fact that he's incomplete and how he is uncertain of his existence. - Hry

He’s the eldest, so he’s trying to be the mature sibling.
If you think about it, Protoman is the closest thing to a reploid, since he always act on his own and stuff.
He is basically the Prototype of a reploid. Only reason he was even "Thrown away" was because he ran away when he was gonna need to get some fixes done to his power supply.

X and Proto Man have no relation to each other, but they fall under the same "conscience" aspect of Reploids. If someone says they'll upgrade X as an order, the reploid has the option to say no. If someone says they'll upgrade Proto Man as an order, he will do as commanded, because he's still not independent enough. But if the upgrade is OPTIONAL, then Proto Man can choose. He's indeed a pre-Reploid in that regard.
I love how Proto Man is willing to help others, but still points out that he's not doing it for his dad, who he's estranged himself from.

I'd say it's a threat *disguised* as a warning. Like saying "Unless you stand aside, you will *definitely* be destroyed no matter what happens to me. So do you want to live, or do you want to guarantee your death?" All from behind those shades that hide if he's bluffing. (Assuming he's even capable, obv.)

Protoman has some really profound dialogue for some of these; he's always given the classic series that hint of the X philosophy of existence, and it really shines here.
Honestly, it's kind of a travesty that the X series never included Proto Man in some way. Imagine if he somehow survived his unstable core and went around playing a mentor role to X and Zero every now and then, knowing he can’t fight any 22nd-century reploid but still administering sage advice as a living relic? Or even just leaving behind his own messages for X to find?
Protoman has WAY to deep of a voice for a game with an artstyle like this.

according to the Acrchie comic, Protoman was created as a prototype for combat robots, because Light needed the money. The army liked the results, but thought he was a bit too sophisticated, so the finished product became the Joe series

For some reason I like how Protoman talks and most of his lines, Sure he likes to talk about himself,but about the incompleteness only when he's around those that are like him. Robots Incomplete with a unstable core or about Sniper Joe though understandable on Sniper Joe but he does worry for robots with unstable cores its a scary thought to think about constantly.
Also I like how he questions about his creation the thought why he was programed for fighting and nothing else.
