I saw Callisto yesterday through my telescope. Wasn't anything more than a point of light beside the gas giant along with other moons. But still fascinating to think about it, the light reflected from the surface of another world travelled millions of kilometres only to enter my telescope and go inside my eye. Surreal.
Indeed, very surreal!
I wonder about her surface looking so similar to our moon. Our moon rings like a bell.
What type of a telescope woud you need to have to see anything in space and how much woud it be?
@@KING-ef2wm Get a small telescope if you want to dive into amateur astronomy. Celestron has one called the "first scope" with some bigger analogs as well. These newtonians will make you able you be able to watch the moon, planets like jupiter and it's galilean moons, venus, mars, and the rings of saturn.
@@arjenbij thank you for the info frend, hope you have a nice day.
I've always thought Calisto looks like it's filled with the bright lights of cities (in reality the impact craters). It is one of the most beautiful moons in our solar system!
It is! To me it looks like it's bejeweled with precious stones...
Reminds me of Coruscant
It might be one day
Earth at night. That was my first though, too. lol
It's that Coruscant action
2:57 I see what you did there 😂😉
"Cratering is perhaps the only process that is vastly been IMPACTING callisto's apperance"
Literally telling this should be a documentary in national geographic . So much high production quality.
Yes it would be nice if there would be more information and facts and less comparisons and analogies in the mainstream documentaries.
That's why I like Astrum so much, you don't feel like you're at the age of 5 when watching his videos.
@@vomm that is correct man .

*Fun **-Fact-** Myth:* Callisto was a nymph who was seduced by Zeus, when he took the form of Artemis, whom she was in love with. They had a son, Arcus, who became a great hunter. Artemis kicked her to the curb, and Hera also found out and asked to speak to her manager. Irate, Hera transformed Callisto into a bear. Many years later, Arcus was hunting a bear, not kowing it was his mother. Seeing this all play out from Mount Olympus, Zeus blew Arcas and Callisto far away from each other and they each became constellations. Callisto became Ursa Major (the bear), and her son became Boötes (the herdsman).
I dunno man, you might have crossed out "fun". That's harsh! XD
Fun fact: Callisto literally means "the most beautiful" in ancient Greek. No wonder Zeus decided to do something about it
*They had a son, Arceus, the God of all Pokemon...
Bootes seems empty inside
Classic Zeus
I still remember when at age of 10, my dad gave me an Encyclopaedia where I first time knew that other planets of our solar system have moons too. And out of which I found Callisto to be the most beautiful and fascinating to me as it had so much spots on its surface. I literally thought Callisto as a gem stone moon as it looked like all the spots are as if shining like gem.❤️
do you remember the name of the encyclopedia?
i wanna see the picture of Callisto in there
Talking about forgotten moons, I know plenty about Saturn's largest moons, but know basically nothing about Rhea, despite it being the second largest after Titan
Good to know, many people including me want to explore more about Rhea
Do you know about Iapetus , Hyperion , and Dione?
@@iapetus6110 a lot about Iapetus. Patrick Moore's favourite and looks like a death star......the rest? I dont know! They are pretty small except Titan
@@jorgepeterbarton but Iapetus has 2 craters ,the death star has 1
The perfect death star like body you are talking about is Mimas and Tethys ,they have 1 giant crater like the death star does
@Oberon hey bestie!
I want to live in a world where this channel has a larger audience than Love Island. Alex, your style and outright ability is up there amongst those rocks you rep 👌
Well said mate👍
Don't let it bother you. Although I agree with you, I have found that what is truly wonderful is enjoyed by the few, and needs a degree of serendipity to discover, which is the reward of those who seek. Let the masses enjoy love island.
I want to live in a world where Love Island doesn't exist!

So true, Callisto is always forgotten. Yet do i still think its the prettiest and most fantastic galilean moon
I don't know, do you?
Prettier than Io?
@@jeffbenton6183 i think so
@@jeffbenton6183 For some reasons they call Uo in German documentaries 'the little Io', in the female form, as you would say about a cute little girl. 'The little Io'. I like that.
I like Ganymede’s goofy graystone aesthetic more, but Callisto’s battered surface is pretty.
Callisto protocol looks like a dope game
No
Yeah it’s a good game😂
How can anyone think Callisto is boring? It looks like a giant space disco-ball! It's awesome!
Your script is very well written. Thank you for taking the time to do it right, so rare these days.
Callisto was the first Galilean moon that I ever wanted to learn about actually!!! Granted, that was because of a sc-fi novel: Anne McCaffrey's wonderful Talent series!
In those books, one of the major characters, a powerful psionic called The Rowan, lives on Callisto Station. In the original short story that predated the novels, her Tower was situated on the moon itself; for years and years I loved to sit and imagine being in that place, in a domed settlement - not terribly large, of course...and being able to just look up and see Jupiter looming "overhead" as it were! The station was indeed used as a waypoint in the world of those books, though the methods of transport were downright fantastical, haha!
This was a great video! I really enjoyed seeing more details about this moon - and you're right, it should not be forgotten. It has too many things to teach us, and too many possibilities that it could open for us!
Centuries from now, when there is a human base on Callisto, hopefully this inspiring video will be remembered and honored by naming the settlement Astrum Base.
humankind won't make it another 50 years at this pace...

@@Max-vr5wb The Chinese are looking to be the least-likely to come out of the coming crisis at even their current standard of living based on how their government is and has been running the place.
How thrilling and fulfilling it would be to work on an outpost station on Callisto! I envy those future explorers.
Did we just finished all the Galilean moons? ✌️✌️✌️
All? Are you sure? You finished all? O.o
Congrats! That was tremendous job to do!
VOLcanism, not volCANism 😉
👍👍 saludos Rafa
Doesn’t Jupiter have 53 named moons already? And that’s not including all of the unnamed ones!
8:04 Callisto has a Tindr account? I might sign up just for the moon.
Joking aside, this is a well-made video and intelligently presented. I honestly didn't even know about Callisto until this video.
You don't want to sign up to Tindr. It has a giant pit in the middle. You don't wanna fall into that. You'll never get out.
I wish I'm alive to see bases being built and used in other moons/planets. What an exciting thought.
Make it to 2040 and we should have something small on the moon.
Ahhh this video makes me happy.
As a 5 year old kid I would never shut up about the planets. So I would be meeting new people and instantly going into why Jupiters moons are so special lol. Thanks BBC and the internet for whatever that was.
Nice! This is my favourite moon in the solar system. I've been hoping you'd do Callisto for some time now. It always gets ignored or forgotten.
I always thought of Callisto as the jewel of the solar system. It is a beautiful world that should be better known. Thankfully, your video has shined a spotlight on this underappreciated world!
A Nice moon that sometimes we forget it but i doesn't means that it isn't interesting.
Thanks for the information Alex greetings and a good weekend for everybody 👋🇲🇽🇪🇸🇮🇪🍀
The Callisto I knew about as a young boy was the green Jovian alien in the Major Matt Mason series of action figure toys. ☺️ But after learning in school that Callisto was also a moon I started asking my folks about the planets & moons. They got me a Rand McNally Atlas of the Solar System, and I was off & running.
Did you know that they call Callisto “The Dead Moon”?
"I Just love that last part gives me chills everytime"
"Attempt a landing there. It's fine. No biggy."
Thank You. We forget that there are many other places besides Venus and Mars to put boots on. Mining maybe?
Callisto is my favourite moon. Its very enigmatic, and does not get the attention it deserves. And if we colonise it, imagine the views we would get.
"Colonize it" spoken like a good little sperm. You know what would make space look good . Human garbage. Floating everywhere and everywhere. After we trash our own moon on our first trial run, we'll look into "populating" the galaxy with other little sperm
@@monolithgeometry3221 Could you shut up? You throw plastic bottles, ride cars while only you being in the car and waste things, space garbage is not even close to the amount of garbage you put in the world through your life. And no, I am not any different.
I'm currently binging so many of these videos over many days.
I just suddenly felt the urge to inform you that your narration/voice is absolutely freaking _PERFECT._
I don't think people think about how hard or seldom it can be to be this original yet soothing and interesting at the same time. Might look like a weird compliment, but I just wanted to say "keep it up" with the excellent narration. Exquisite.
Callisto protocol brought me here
Absolutely love what you do for us! Please keep the videos coming about Jupiter and it’s moons. I recently received original technical drawings for Galileo and will have them framed for my daughters. One of them is 10 feet wide and 1 foot high. My dad was the mission controller for that mission at NASA/JPL.
I quickly glanced at your comment and read: "my daughters... one of them is 10 feet wide and 1 foot high"... Had to do a double take.
@@VideoDotGoogleDotCom
Yes, clearly she's a Jovian Giant of a Lass..!!!
😳😜🤣
So excited for the JUICE mission (great name btw)!
The Astrum logo doesnt get enought love. Looks amazing. Well done
im so thankfull for you to dedicate full videos for single moons, i always think i know alot about space but i never cease to learn something new watching your and other Astronomy channels and im here for it
I say it was a multitude of electrical discharge. Not only on callisto.
Most craters on bodys in our system imply a hit at a right angle to the surface ...
I like how the name sounds. "Callisto"
Agree!! As a kid I kept thinking it was called Castillio. 🤷♂️
Basically all moons of Jupiter ( major and small) are named after ancient Greek female names!
@@thomasfholland calypso i thought
The fact that Callisto is basically a time capsule for the early solar system is very fascinating to me, and something I didn't know. Thank you for the informative and educational videos. I bought a telescope for my sons 14th birthday and we've been spying on Jupiter and Saturn, and eagerly awaiting Orion this fall! He wants to have a career as an astrophysicist, your channel has inspired him quite a bit!
Thanks for nice video Alex!;)
I think Callisto one of the most beautiful moons out there, and even name is charming;)
Thank you so much for the time and care you put into your wonderful videos.
Callisto is by far my favorite moon to learn about, and my favorite moon of ALL time. I even have a pendant of Callisto I wear everywhere I go
Coldplay's Coloratura brought me here when I was searching for the moons/stars/planets mentioned in the song. Awesome! Love your videos! ❤
I appreciate the ad being placed at the end and not in the middle, I was much more inclined to listen to it with that placement
Amazing content and knowledge on display here. Thank you!
AYYYEE new Astrum video lets goooo
Incredible video once again, I swear i cant find any other videos that is so well researched and detail like yours
Anton Petrov is an informed space channel if you didnt already know of him
I love your videos, very well done, keep up the great work! Can't wait for the JUICE mission to find out more about Callisto and the other moons!
Thank you so much for this documentary about Callisto, it was awesome.
This channel is so chill and great. :)
My favorite Galilean moon finally is getting the attention it deserves. Ever since I was a kid the beauty of Callisto has always captivated me. By far it's one of the most beautiful planetary satellites in our solar system. Thanks for the video! Glad that more people can start to appreciate Callisto now after watching this.
Appreciate the informational videos, so many facts and great pictures in a short amount of time.
I am continually amazed by the differences and peculiarities of each celestial body. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thank you, Alex. This was particularly fascinating. She has been forgotten no longer. :)
This is the first video I've seen from your channel. Great quality stuff! will definitely be watching more.
Thank you for the deep dive Alex …. Your cool easy style makes space seem far more interesting than most.
Outstanding video lesson! Thank you so much! More! (He says, selfishly). - Dave Huntsman
Love the videos! You do a fantastic job...keep them coming!
Been a huge fan of yours for a while now. With the production quality and in depth nature of your videos, here are some topics I would love to see:
-The lesser known Saturnian moons (Rhea, Iapetus, Dione, etc)
-full episodic rundowns of other classic missions such as your Opportunity series but with Voyager, Viking, Cassini, etc
-Maybe a timeline series in which you rundown all of the planned missions for the upcoming years
I'll be happy with any video of yours though, just some suggestions :)
I would love to see videos on Titania, Oberon, and Ariel!
Happy to see Callisto getting some love. It’s often overlooked, as you mentioned in the intro.
Sweet, new Astrum vid.
Thanks Alex.
"Cratering is perhaps the only process that has vastly been impacting Callisto's appearance over its lifetime."
I see what you did there.
Really cool to see this channel getting some sponsors! Thank you world of tanks!
I absolutely love your channel! You produce such high quality videos! I learn a tonne from you and I always recommend your channel first to friends and relatives that I hear are interested in space! For real man thanks for your work!
I keep falling asleep to these videos in a good way. So relaxing and soothing.
Great facts, great narration, great editing, great video 👍
Love Callisto. Love your channel.
Excellent as always.
Would love a super cut of all the moons. They’re fantastic to watch and even better to drift off to sleep too which is why I have an Astrum to Sleep playlist! Ha
great video. digging all your videos so far.
Love ur vids man, keep up the epic effort!
An excellent presentation. Congrats
Awesome stuff. Thank you.
I was waiting for this awesome video , Callisto is my favorite moon
imagine if instead of playing a computer game, in the future, if we could pay to fly around drones or drive a rover on various planets & moons in the solar system and explore & see perfect video of every place we go in our vehicle?
Someone is gonna make a killing off of your idea. 👍
thanks, I love your videos!
Knowing how the universe likes to throw curveballs at us, it'd be funny if in the future where we actually start exploring the other moons of the solar system, it turns out Callisto was the one that harbored life.
Thanks for the video
Agreed, Alex: Callisto would be a great place to set up a base in the distant future.
If we ignore all the literal impact craters which could imply our stuff there being in danger of getting damaged or destroyed.
@@moviemaker2011z all moons really get hit by the same amount of craters, its just that callisto has never had its surface change so you see all the craters, but in a world like enceladus, it you'd still be at the same risk, just that you cant see the craters
Hey Astrum, would you consider doing videos on the outer dwarf planets like Quaoar Makemake and Sedna? I feel like they would be interesting to cover, but nobody knows about them.
excellent video and production!
Thank you so much for making this video I yo I found it so interesting and educational
Great job once again. And Thanks 😎👍🍁
I remember playing G-Police on the PS-1 23 years ago, set on a well-colonised mining outpost in Domes on Callisto.
Callisto always reminds me of the BBC documentary series 'The Planets'! Before the internet it was my gateway to the Cosmos, I watched it hundreds of times, the score was so amazing!
space exploration really gets my juices flowing
Interesting video! 1000 thumbs up! Love this channel very much!
fascinating Video. Thank you.
Callisto will be a good Transfer station if humans want to travel to the outer solar syster.
You are a brilliant story teller
Awesome video...Alex (Astrum) is the #1 BEST CZcams channel.
Super neat! Thank you. :)
Out of all the solar system objects, to me Callisto is the second place to visit with Mars being the first. The advantage it is outside the ferocious radiation belt of Jupiter cannot be underestimated. Moreover energy wise, to visit and land on Callisto will take less propellant than Mars. It is just a manned trip will be in the order of 16 years as opposed to a Martin trip of 2.5 years. 16 years is a long time.
I wonder about Callisto being "outside" Jupiter's Magnetic Field. Does not Jupiter have a tail like Earth? Would not Callisto sweep thru that magnetic tail, like the Moon does Earth's?
Thank you, again.
Thanks For Doing My Request! :)
One of my favorite channel, plz make a video on Rhea moon of saturn
Hey mate, I grew up here in Australia fishing all throughout My childhood and into my late teens I used a baitcaster fishing reel called a Shimano CALLISTO, I liked finding out through this video that it is in fact named after a Moon ,AWESOME!!!
Love these videos! 🙂
from before watching most of the video (stopping at the part about being hard-pressed to know anything about it):
-Callisto has some water in it
-It's one of Jupiter's moons
-its around the size of Mercury i think
so yeah i dont really know anything about it
I'm hyped for the Callisto Protocol so I've been watching vids on the satellite lately.
Calisto is my fav galilean moon because of the game G-police, which is set on it, and it's one of the best games I've ever played.
Great video! And I didn't know that Callisto was that... well reasonable for colonisation! Would be good for the sci fi world building project I'm doing!
