Anxiety Help: "Can You Talk More About ...?" (Podcast Ep 271)

  • If this is all new to you, asking for more information is normal, expected, and healthy! Everyone needs more information and explanation to start.
    But if you are not new to this and you've heard me and others talk about your scariest symptom or stickiest recovery issue over and over, ask yourself what you are hoping to get when you ask us to talk more about it. After multiple books, videos, social media posts, livestreams and podcast episodes on a given topic, it can be helpful to stop and consider what more you think you need to hear, and why you need to hear it.
    Consider that asking for encouragement or cheerleading is likely more productive than getting stuck in the "tell me more" cycle, which can lead to judging yourself negatively because you can't seem to move forward.

    All of the anxiety and panic related books, videos, podcasts, programs, blogs and social media content are what I consider PASSIVE recovery. All these things can do is give you guidance.
    ACTIVE recovery and changing your actual behaviors is where progress is made.

      Nailed it! This information is here (speaking only for the content I produce) to inform your actions. The podcasts and books themselves are not recovery. Thank you for this comment.

    I'm about 50% recovered which is a milestone for me. I did not think I would ever recover. I still like tuning in for nuggets of wisdom. One of my favorites from you is an answer to what if it comes back? The answer of you will be a different you better able to cope was very helpful for me.

    I believe you’re right. I think it’s the fear of going crazy and losing your mind. Anxiety is scary. Even after 12 months, sometimes I’ll still get scared sometimes. The other night I barely slept. My body went anxious out of nowhere and I was so tired. Woke up in the morning anxious and very tired but I kept going through my day. I’m just so used to it by now.

    I stumbled across Drew whilst in the thick of anxiety, but with previous knowledge of Claire Weekes. I have used the podcasts and read the books, and currently, 90% recovered
    Only me can help me take that leap of faith in me. that's the crux, and it does work

      That 90% is all you. YOU get all the credit for making those difficult changes. Well done! 🙂

    It's all about reassurance - it feels like there's no way through

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  Před 11 měsíci +1

      That never ending cycle of reassurance is part of what creates that "no way out" feeling. When you find something that soothes you for an hour or a day, the catastrophic thinking (NOTHING WORKS!) often kicks in when that soothing wears off. You seek reassurance because you feel that there's no way out, then you feel like there's no way out when that strategy doesn't last very long. Its a rough cycle for sure.

    It definitely comes down to wanting more reassurance or wanting that one peice of information that is going to be that "quick fix for someone"
    Like me for example, I came on here to try and find some of your videos regarding medication.
    Now I've been recovered for quite some time now . Recently my doctor wants to put my on Cymbalta due to my chronic pain and my symptoms that resemble MS (im getting tested for) and I'm really having a hard time starting any type of SNRIs because of the work that I've done through acceptance therapy.
    And I know no one can tell me what to do but you're right. There's this hope that we'll find this "new" peice of information that'll give us the answer.

    Well i guess if you're gonna become a therapist you will always have people asking questions , for assurance, not everyone is a success story. Sadly after 5 years of having anxuety disorder basically the answer is : ignore it and it will go away. Its managed , its not gone away. Thats the nature of it , you are never over it.

      Its normal and nessicary to feel anxious sometimes. Everybody feels anxious about some things. Getting stuck on it and hyper focused is the problem. That is easy to change with practice though. Remember; "this too shall pass"

    • @TheAnxiousTruth
      @TheAnxiousTruth  Před 11 měsíci +1

      You are free to declare that this is YOUR truth about recovery. I would vehemently disagree. For clarification, I NEVER EVER tell people "ignore it and it goes away". That's not in any way how this works. Also, I never say that you can only manage anxiety, because that's simply not true. But if you feel I am off base and that what I am saying doesn't apply to you or work for you, then I advise you to adjust your anxiety content consumption accordingly to best serve your needs.

    I have the same question! But i never hear you talk about my question! My question is I hear you talk about alot of people that cant leave the house or drive! I have always been able to leave the house and do things! but i have anxiety 24/7! so can you make a podcast about people like me! i do have other fears though like the food i eat! I feel like some foods will trigger my anxiety!

      I'm really talking about you too. See my other response to your other comment. Also, check out the episode of "Disordered" (its on any podcast app/platform) on "anxiety all day long". Josh and I talked about this there too.

    Drew, this comment doesn’t really have anything to do with this topic but; I’ve struggled with disordered anxiety for years and I’m doing well, my son has been struggling lately with it and I’ve been able to help him to some degree with what I know. He’s says he understands what’s going on but I’m not sure he does. I’m thinking maybe it’s because I’m his mom and he really isn’t listening to me. I suggested therapy to him but he doesn’t want to do that (he’s 18). Do you have any advice on what he should do? Do you do any one on one with people Or know a good anxiety therapist (when he’s ready) in the central New York area. We live in a suburb of Syracuse. Thanks for any advice and I’m sorry I got off the topic here but I know you check these comments.

      Hi Viola. Use the link below. I might be able to help myself starting in February, or I may be able to find a referral to someone that can help. I can't really say "what he should do" beyond making good use of the material I (and others like me) produce that can help him understand the nature of what he's facing.
