When you tap your brake while hitting the ball off the wall, are you still holding down gas at the same time you tap brake?

​@@BriscoeTVrl Something about this whole 'tap brake' thing isn't clicking for me. Can I not just drive up the wall slower when hitting the ball to achieve the same effect to pop the ball out? Or delay my jump off the wall slightly after I hit the ball?
Can I practice this on the ground with a ball rolling slowly towards me for the same effect?
