Husqvarna 592xp vs Stihl ms500i - Saw Off Fun

We have a prototype Husqvarna 5??, which at this juncture no one knew what the displacement was. Or the model designation. Also, we have one of the early prototype 5ooi Max-Flow rain covers.
So, lots of R&D testing in this "strip".
    Providing a little history -
My buddy Dave in Ireland had sent me his 5ooi late in February of 2020. While "checking under the hood", I had immediately noticed all the debris that made it past the HD2. I called my other buddy Joseph, Mr. Holeshot, or Mr. Max-Flow for all the "youngins". I told him straight up. "If there was ever a saw that needed one of his air filtration systems it was the 5ooi." Not that it was a "collaborative effort" as I was only providing pointers, suggestions, and observations. I did request the roof get added on to the 1st gen "summer" rendition. Early production covers were more open and suitable for dry weather conditions. That cover was replaced with what is now called the winter or rain version. The 1st gen covers utilized a 4 prong system to hold the element & cage against the filter base. I had "squealed" pretty "goodly" about aspect being a detriment. The end result are the raised, oblong rings on the inside that are similar to what is used on the 044 through 661 covers.
I had made arraignments with Joseph for a looksee session in June of 2020.
Actually, met up with him in Grants Pass.
Due to the covid fiasco, it took quite awhile to get anything, or everything, done on a production level. What would have been a few months took well over a year. That is, get the covers into production.
The following videos give a more in-depth discussion on timelines & some of the nuance.
    • Stihl 500i MAX-FLOW Sy...
    • This Is The "WORLD'S F... shows the 1st production cover.
    • Stihl 500i - 1st Look!... shows the 1st brush/rain/West Coast cover.
This Husky, was well received by both Gary and myself. I had used this saw to fell and buck quite a few nice trees that are evident in the following videos -
    • In With the New,,, Yea...
    • 2nd Tree, Impressive F...
    • Husky 592 Xtra Power,,...
    • Husky 592xp, Nice Fir,...
I had immediately noticed that it had great power and made mention of it. I had even gone so far as to call it the new horsepower king below 100cc.
This was filmed ~ 2 PM. Keep in mind that the chain on the 5?? had seen at least ¾ days worth of action. At this point the chain on the 5ooi had only done a little limbing & bucking.
In the 1st run we see the 5?? smoking through the big cut and blowing chips. So much so, that Gary "runs" for cover. Clearly the Husky had a much larger diameter section. As we watch, we see the saws dropping through the cut at the same speed.
We see Gary's assessment of the 5?? after the 2nd round on the 1st small cuts. But then, we take a look at the diameters. 20" inches for the 5?? and 16" for the 5ooi.
As mentioned at the end of the video, the 5ooi is sporting a 32" bar. The 5?? has a short 36".
The Husky didn't win in the 1st small cut while giving up 4" in bar length & 4" in cut diameter.
Once we move down to the small end the times are relatively close. The 5?? starts a little sooner but it is at the same time getting the little bit larger diameter cut. The 5?? took "low ground" every time.
Important to note the fact that a tree is more dense at the base, near the ground. The wood is harder to cut - the reason the old timers would work on boards 10/12/15 feet up the bole. It's no different in this tree.
In the end, we did have some fun on this day.
At the time of your viewing this, I may, or may not, be immediately available for custom saw modifications. I am booked out several months regularly. Sometimes I'm out in the bush - making the world a safer place, one stump at a time.
If you are interested in having a saw zipped, please shoot me an email. That is the best, first point of contact.
I fairly busy and am routinely behind so it may take while for me to respond.

I'm a Stihl guy myself, but I'd still go for the 592 over the 500i without question. Having said that, I'd still prefer to stick with my 661 over both of these. But who am I kidding, I'd be happy to own and run all of them!

    Hi Jack
Nice review my pick would be the 500i.
I know that 592 has more power but heavy to
work with all day general purpose work saw 500i
power to weight ratio with STIHL light bar gets
    my vote.

      Thank you.
I think it depends upon the application. For me anyway.
Choosing between those two only -
Stumping with a 33" or 34.5" (short 36") bar I'd get the 592. They get pretty good fuel economy. A guy might actually accomplished something throughout the day.
5ooi, well super poor fuel economy.
20/25 mins and it's chase your camp again. If the trees are big, you might not even get one on the ground, limbed, and bucked up on one tank.
      Not for me.
I think that everyl arboists should own a 5ooi conversely. Perfect for a lot of the in and around tree work.
      Thanks for watching.

I've run the 395 (mildly ported) and it has left my ownership now and the 592 has replaced it. For bucking big logs and felling larger timber, I just can't find much to fault...maybe if it were a pound lighter out front?..or came with a full wrap handle, out of the box?..skid plate?
I don't know. There's just too much good stuff goin' on with this saw...
Of note, the 592 is just under 93cc (if memory serves).
It's definitely what you'd call a "healthy" beaver.

Well Jack it seems more than a couple of years ago I sent that saw over and due to you and Joseph a whole lot of 500i's have been saved from certain death due to such a poor stock filter !
Having the 585 and 592XP I have to say I like the feel the pair of them have that ability to just feather away at the throttle as opposed to the more on - off feel of the 500i, however we must all agree that the 500i and 585 / 592 are saws at the top of the two company's game ?

It's toooooo bad more people don't read the description area of the videos. Might save some face.
Reiterating, this was filmed in January of 2021. Way before anyone outside of engineering and a possibility a few reps knew what the displacement was - of either of the two prototypes being field tested for Husqvarna at this time.
Now, two years and a couple of months later, everyone knows what they displace and the factory nomenclature for the models.
I am running the two latest saw from the big two here. Albeit a little early for the Husky. It is to show the, if there is any, differential. So, absolutely a fair comparison.
I spend a fair amout of time typing, "duel index finger shuffle", qualifying.
I mention it (qualifiers) in the pinned comment (1st one in the comment section) most of the time.

The internet is full of partial truths, ½ truths, complete non truths...
Unfortunately, anyone who is not a dealer with access to the dealer network, software and hardware, etc. CANNOT alter the mapping or set parameters on the 5ooi saws.
It requires being hooked up to diagnostics and then have the setting(s) "tripped" by the technician. At which point the technician would go outside and operate the saw. Then they would have to hook it up again and verify that some/all/any of the parameters were different.
So, if someone ran a 5ooi but didn't like it, only to let it idle a bit,, awhile, an hour, and then all of a sudden do like it,,, well, they are mistaken/outta touch/way off base - because nothing in the operating system changed.
