MG ZS EV Review | Better Than A Kia Niro EV?
Vložit
- čas přidán 1. 07. 2024
- This week on Buckle Up, Jasper drives the MG ZS EV, and tries to answer some questions about it. Only coming to the market in their current for in 2011, MG quickly redefined themselves as trusty budget brand offering great value for money and a market leading 7 year warranty. They also quickly adopted EVs as a key part of their market strategy, focusing in initially on their core value of good value.
Now however MG have kicked it up a notch with heavy refreshes of this car as well as the MG5 and the MG4 family Hatchback and MG Cybster electric sports car on the way the marque is becoming a force to reckon with and a real disruptor in the segment.
Jasper endeavours to establish if this facelifted MG ZS EV can keep astride of these plans and offer not just great value but a better driving and ownership experience than you might get from a more expensive rival?
Competing in the same segment as the ever-popular Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, BMW X3, Audi Q3, VW T-Cross, Skoda Kodiaq, Seat Arona, Volvo XC 40, Renault Captur and Ford Puma, what makes the MG ZS stand out? And is the EV model actually the one to go for?

There are some really nice bits of attention to detail throughout this car, I think MG's future looks very bright indeed
We can’t wait to see what they bring out next!
From your review seems like you have tested he standard range one and not the long range.
Regarding the charge port the older Version ZS had the charging port in the middle but with flap opening upward that made it hard to charge.
Lots of the comments on it were that it would have been better on/to the side and i guess MG misunderstood placed it on the side and not open the to the side.
I love your review as it is very organized, I love the question then answer format and answers all the questions you might have regarding the car
I like the fact that you review it for what the car is meant to serve and not comparing it to cars 10K+more expensive in price
One of the things I hate about many of the car reviews is that the reviewer expects a 30K car to be like the 80+K car he reviewed a week earlier
Yes, plastics will be cheaper and yes the handling of the car and noise levels different but judge a car for what it is and value for money it’s the best car I tested why I ordered one.
Thanks for watching
I am from HK, well I just ordered the 72Kwh version as well, waiting for delivery in early July this year!
Personally, I don't really like that the charging panel is right next to the MG badge and not located behind the MG badge itself - It's too visible in white and other various colours. To make up for it, I went with the Black Pearl colour and it took away my OCD haha.
Indeed, the offset nature of the badge Vs charging flap really irritated me. JUST MAKE IT CENTRAL!
You should have made it clear you are driving the short range version rather than the long range 273 mile (WTLP) version.
I’ll be clearer next time
I'm at 31 weeks waiting for the LR Trophy Connect and hope to have it soon.
You won’t be disappointed
Thanks, expect to get mine soon...
Thanks for watching
Good review. Thanks. Did you say that the car needs to remain unlocked while charging? So, how can I manage a snack or a comfort break at a public spot?
This is incorrect, in order to open the charging flap the car needs to be unlocked. Once plugged in and charging you can lock the car as normal. The charging cable locks once charging initiates so that this cannot be simply unplugged by some random passer by.
Don't believe I said anything about whether the car needs to be unlocked while charging. As Amrath92 has said, you get into the charging port when the car is unlocked, but you are able to lock the cable to the car and leave it charging.
I don't like the front end but I don't completely hate it either - the off-center charging port bothers me the most.
Weirdly, I think it shows up more on camera. The colour doesn’t help either
Totally agree re the look of the front.
My OCD was kicking in
What's the safe carry weight of the roof bars?
No one cares
@@BuckleUpShowwhat a strange response. I use a roof box a lot so I do care.
1) Mr McCrazyFish is one of the hosts of this channel so we can safely assume he isn't offended and 2) If you're using a roof box "a lot" why didn't you buy a big enough car for your things
are those the alloys or aero wheel covers?
Aero wheel covers alloys underneath
What they said ^
@@ChazWyvern Alloy wheels, (unsprung weight). The covers are aerodynamic, and every little bits helps with range.
i used to using the lamp on the right side..
Pardon?
It’s good if you want a carish car. The colour is this one is great.
A lot of people do want just that, we prefer the blue but it’s pretty good for a ‘crossover’
But can you fit in the boot?
Goes without saying
I was under the impression that the range for the MGZS ev was 273 miles your video says much less than that.(prev should have read Is it long range)
No, the version I had was not the long-range model. The press documents I was provided said a WLTP range of 198 miles. The long range is the 273 you mention.
I have this same car but in Red a get between 4.3 &4.8 kwh and I also got the short range like this one I get around 225/240 miles per charge so for you to say 150 you must of being flooring it and driving it in sports mode,
Even when I travelled back home on my collection day from Burnley back to Birmingham about 120 miles I was still around the 4.0/4.2kwh then.
Overall the car is fantastic and I'm sorry but you really haven't done it justice at all.
Do you drive everywhere at 38 mph?
Looks decent, apart from the bloody off centre charging flap! Why?!?!
To annoy people with OCD. It annoys Jasper and Rob, but Harry doesn’t mind it at all
Is the long-range as I ? your distance traveled.
Huh?
It looks good, but I would still prefer a torquey 2 & 1/2 Litre V6
🤦♂️
I wouldn’t buy one, or any EV simply on the basis that I drive 10k a month. I fully acknowledge that I’m in the minority, but I do wish they’d make the batteries last significantly longer
Well, and even if they did make something that could consistently do 500 - 600 miles (I'm guessing that would cover your daily amount) you would still be looking to do rapid charging daily which really stresses a battery out.
Either someone will figure our how to do long range and constant fast charging with batteries or a competent substitute tech will emerge (Hydrogen, Synthetic fuel made with carbon capture) but you're right that as of right now an EV just wouldn't really work for you.
You might be short, but you fill your clothes out very nicely 😜
Ooh I’m blushing
Never a mg it’s a disgrace
Can anyone smell gammon?
@@BuckleUpShow I think this model is designed by UK team but manufactured in China, this car is built in good synergy of mankind, why a disgrace
