    Generally speaking, they say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. But in a highly competitive industry such as hip-hop where every last shred of your individuality is paramount to your success, the notion of someone stealing your style, cadence, flow or concepts, can be seen as one of the greatest crimes a rapper can commit.

    I think 95% of "copies" are just people who were influenced by the people they grew up listening to. When they set out to make music they're not even thinking about their influences, they're just making something they want to hear. Also Logic made a really good point that a rapper's sound is not just their sound, it's the people who produce the music too. People like Terrace Martin and Thundercat are incredible artists - if I'm trying to make something amazing am I just gonna avoid working with them so people don't say I sound like Kendrick? No way bruh.

    • @Prolificx
      @Prolificx Před rokem +106

      But there is a difference between a copy and being highly influenced. For example you Kendrick is heavily influenced by Eminem and Tupac, but he has his own style and most people don't think about Eminem or Tupac when listening to Kendrick in most cases.

      @@Prolificx I agree. I don't listen to Logic so I can't speak on him. Personally I think Cordae being a copy of J.Cole is the laziest claim out there. He writes very standard 16 bars and picks beats that are modern and safe. With that criteria, if he was copying it could be any mainstream guy from the last 20 years. The only thing left is he writes "woke" bars. People take that and say he's copying Cole...like maybe he's just a smart introspective dude who was influenced by all of the greats?? Idk people like to throw the copy label around but that's a strong claim and I find that people rarely bring strong evidence.

      @CubensisEnjoyer Před rokem +1

      @@flobbyrobbo2889 Yeah I don't listen to him so I'm not sure. From things I've heard it definitely sounds like he did some copying and pretty unapologetically too. 😅 I'm just a huge fan of Terrace Martin and Thundercat so what he said resonated with me a bit. They bring their own distinctive sounds but if I made a song with them, somebody that doesn't listen to them would just hear a wannabe TPAB which would be the furthest from the truth.

But it’s interesting cause him and fantano are obviously people who study music (Anthony arguably has more range) and have valid opinions. But depending on your viewpoint their opinions either hold a lot or very little weight.

      @@ruffprophetproductions Yeah. My issue isnt even the fact that HHM agrees. Its just that they either copy and paste their opinions from these 3 or feel that their support is solid proof. This is especially annoying when one of those 3 don't back up a claim.
      For example, this is the 2nd or 3rd time HHM has said Cordae sounds like Cole, and their only evidence is "Shawn Cee said so." But when you watch Cee's arguments, he provides no evidence. He just says it. So now HHM looks silly for relying on Cee's baseless claim when they could've done their own research and brought their own evidence.
      At the end of the day, these 3 are just sharing their opinions. Their opinions don't weigh more than anyone at HHM.

    While I completely agree with your take on Token's early career (Even Token agrees with this assessment), I do think you guys are really doing him a disservice by not covering, or, at the very least, mentioning his massive growth as an artist over the last few years. He has really come into his own unique, chill, and laid back yet technical style. He has gone on record stating that he has deliberately put in a lot of effort over the last few years to really separate himself from the "lyrical miracle" type of rap style, as well as disassociate himself from that sort of fanbase. I was never a fan or listener of token (mostly because I thought he sounded corny af), but his last project really caught my attention. His track "Amsterdam" with Benny the Butcher really caught my attention, as it demonstrated a ton of improvement/ growth as an artist, and his new flow really sounded smooth and buttery af on that track. Of course, there's still quite a few things he needs to work on in order to help develop past that sort of style, but imo he's actually a great example of an artist actively working to grow past/distance themselves from the corny/cringe "lyrical miracle" style/fanbase in a positive manner.

    • @jbmp1390
      @jbmp1390 Před rokem +26

      You're completely right. I'm not even a Token fan but it's clear from multiple videos that someone at this channel just personally dislikes him/his music and they go out of their way to paint him in a light that just isn't honest. From what I've seen he's pretty self aware, actually cares about the art form and history of Hip Hop, and has steadily progressed as a rapper and artist in general. They do a similar thing to Cordae and that bothers me far more. Has he made a classic album yet, no. But does that mean he's not talented or hasn't made great music? Obviously not! But for some reason they act like he's a blatant J Cole clone when nothing could be further from the truth. Guys like him are the future of Hip Hop. This channel needs more objectivity or they're running the risk of ruining the reputation they've built.

      @jbmp1390 I've been listening to Token sense high school and ya he's definitely grown a lot as an artist. He's greatly expanded the range of sounds he can tap into, and his pen game has consistently improved over the years. He does drop some singles that I'll find a little eh, but he also drops some real bangers. And ya his last album was rly fucking good, definitely a big step forward for him. Really shifts the tone from what ppl think his shit sounds like. I've noticed these guys sly Token a lot, idk what thier deal is with him. Same with NF. I get theres an obvious similarity in style. But with him too, with his latest project I think his penmanship showed serious growth and rly made his own imprint on the style. Maybe they just think the audience will respond well if they rag on artists that public image feels to 2017"gerrr mumble raps not real rap this is real rap".

    It is influence if you acknowledge your idol and try to add your own kick to it but if you use the same flow, delivery, beat selection, lyrics, swag, persona, & overall sound (voice/autotune) and deny you ever heard of that particular artist that’s the definition of copy and paste rappers.

    Boy, I tell you something. They better be glad that this isn’t the 1990’s. I mean if this was going on during that time, must of these copy and paste rappers would’ve had their ass kicked

      nah not really. The 90's if anything was worst about this. There was no room for deviating from what the radio wanted to play. They copied each other a ton or were forced to by labels. The internet has given us way more diversity.
