BIRD HOUSE in the Hirschstetten flower gardens: Only native birds will be on display in the 1,200 square meter bird house in the Hirschstetten flower gardens. Goldfinches and greenfinches were the first residents in the largest birdhouse in Austria, which opened in 2019. Birds are also taken in here if they are nursed back to health but could no longer survive in the wild.
The birds in the Hirschstetten bird house feed on, among other things, serviceberry, elderberry, chokeberry, sea buckthorn, blood plants, dwarf peaches and hazelnut bushes that are present here. Lovingly laid out paths with seating and small platforms invite you to linger.
The Hirschstetten flower gardens and the birdhouse are located in the 22nd district of Vienna, Donaustadt, on Quadenstrasse. Plants have been grown for public planting since the 1950s. Since 2002, the facility has been open between mid-March and mid-October and is used as a resort. There is a palm house and a 60,000 m2 florarium with themed show gardens (“Donaustadt Wine Hill”, “Garden of Provence”, “Chinese or TCM Garden”, “Prehistoric Garden”), a modeled traditional farm and several small zoological areas (Wildcat enclosure, goats on the farm, turtle garden, insectarium in the palm house).
