Antique Scale Restoration - Laser Engraving, Bluing, Sandblasting

- In this video, I take you through the complete restoration of a beautiful antique kitchen scale. This old scale was in a rough state, but with careful attention and the right techniques, I've brought it back to life.
The restoration process begins with a thorough disassembly of the scale to clean and restore each part individually. I first check if the original paint contains lead-it thankfully does not. The brass components are soaked in a mixture of flour, vinegar, and salt to gently remove dirt and tarnish. The other parts are sandblasted to eliminate rust and grime.
Once all the pieces are cleaned, it’s time for painting. The large parts are sprayed with fresh paint, while the smaller internal components are blued to protect against corrosion. Since the original scale plate was missing, I created a new one from aluminum. The numbers on the scale are engraved using precise laser engraving, giving the scale a stunning, authentic look.
Finally, I add green decorative details to the freshly white-painted scale, completing the restoration. The highlight of this project is undoubtedly the new scale plate brought to life by the laser engraving.

Great job on the restoration! A trick I saw for fine detail painting is to use a toothpick instead of a brush (if you don't have a tiny brush).

Awesome restoration! Precision masking tape might help with the painting as it's meant to be flexible enough to go around the corners while still giving you a crisp line.

Nicely done! Did you coat the laser engraved scale with a clear lacquer? Also, would the depth of the laser engraving permit adding color to the scale?
Thanks, no I didn't put any varnish on it. Since the surface was already rough, I didn't dare put powder on it, otherwise everything might be colored and I didn't want that... 🐢

Yeah, but would the painting have been perfect on an original unit? Probably not, so you made it look authentic. Painting freehand is not easy. Take it from a model builder. it takes quite a while and a lot of practice to get really good.

While I normally love your restoration videos, this is the first time I've nearly turned one off before finishing it. The "shaky cam" segments made me feel sick to my stomach because I get motion sick really easily. All in all, this was a great restoration, but please avoid the shaky camera!
