The interviewer was desperately trying to get Chavez to disrespect Whitaker. Makes me wonder if they sent a female journalist hoping he's be more inclined to try and Macho things up. To his credit he didn't and was pretty respectful - just the last comment when he compared how much balls they each have, so I guess that was what they'd take out of the interview. He was right about how Whitaker would fight except for two things really: that he'd run - he didn't, he was evasive but didn't run around the ring and that his sparring partners could emulate Whitaker's style. He was correct in that he'd be able to reach Whitaker with his shots but in doing so he struggled to get a lot of power on them. That, plus him not being a natural Welterweight is what cost him. Yeah, I know Whitaker was a small guy at 147 but his style was to minimize contact and that will usually be more successful in terms of moving through the weights. Even a killer like Duran was at Lightweight had to adjust and become more of a counter-puncher at 147 and above, Chavez fought the same way by and large and struggled to impose his style on heavier opponents. For example, Duran was only slightly bigger than Chavez yet was able to box competitively against a peak Hagler at 160. Can anyone imagine Chavez doing the same?
There's a reason why Chavez still holds the record for boxing attendance (136274 in attendance at Azteca stadium ) . he was real...genuine, with a real heart. He proved to be a sore loser later in his career,but he gave everything of himself in the ring and people sensed that, and loved him for it. As talented as he was, there's no way that 136274 would come to see Whitiker fight. He was about self preservation. He was merely a talented fighter, not a warrior. There's a difference.
Later in his career, unfortunately, he was dranking a lot. Even before the fight with Whitaker. After Chavez's victory over Taylor, Chavez started dranking after that much more than before.
