A long time ago a guy I was working with said "I'd rather park on old car in front of my own house than park a new car in front of my apartment." These days I park my 17 year old VW in front of my house.
I agree, I park my 20 year old Buick in front if my mobile home. 🤣🤣
A house is not automatically better than an apartment. It's all about the loan and financing terms. A poorly financed house can be worse than a lot of things. How many people do we hear about that are "house poor" or with unfavorable terms. Right now I'm debt free thanks to living in an apartment! Paid off student loans, car, maximizing 401k and other investments, and will eventually buy a house. At the end of the day, a mortgage is still debt, although it CAN be an investment, it's not automatically. Now living in a luxury apartment where you're not really saving much money over a house, is another story.
I am always befuddled by the new cars I see parked in front of affordable housing units.

It wasn't until I few years ago, I realised not everyone bought a car straight up (with cash, or debt card), my parents are definitely not well off, but they've never bought a car over £5,000 and obviously used. It was recently that I realised that isn't normal.

I paid cash for my car in 2011. But in 2019 it still looks great, but is starting to have some problems and is getting expensive. But yeah there is always a balancing act between new and reliable, and paid off but unreliable

I've been there and done that and I 100 percent agree it is stupid lucky for me I was young and got out of debt when I did.

I work in HVAC and it blows my mind when people don't upgrade their AC when the unit is 20 years old. Yet you go outside and they have 100k worth of cars in the driveway and say they can't afford to upgrade.
Banks are an enabler of this problem. I know people personally who got a $40K auto loan with a $30K salary.

Alan Shearer top ranking football player (during his amazing testimonial he said "I've lived the dream") in the Premiership (British of course) still shops at Tesco's even though he's got tons of money literally will categorically be a millionaire lol he's spoken since retiring from playing about his time as an apprentice with Southampton (then moved to Blackburn and finally his childhood hero club NUFC in Newcastle) about when he was paid just something like £30 a week lol and he'd decide to walk it to the club rather than paying for the bus pass lol.

Dave is 100% Right!! I just bought a SUV and paid cash for it. When you pay cash it causes to spend less. I could have bought one for $15,000 used and it would be worth $15K used. But paying cash made me want to spend under $10K and in the end I spent $7,300 for a 2010 with 65K on it.

It’s easy to get a loan but hard to write a check.
Similar situation, similar budget. The asking price at the dealer was $9000 and they wanted to give me $1000 for my trade in, but I took the time to negotiate. Swung the deal $1000 in my favor. I probably wouldn't have cared enough to do that if it was a loan and I was just looking at the down payment and monthly payments.
Paying cash makes you cut out the non sense quickly. How much do you realllllly want it?

yep, hear ya bro. save even half that payment for the next 5 years and pay cash next time. i did the same thing. buying a nice 4 year old car driving for even 4 years is better than buying new and driving for 8... about half the price and get a nicer car

My buddy has a body shop next to a repo business. When I visit, you should see the daily routine of cars coming in and going out. Coming in on a tow truck and going out on a car hauler. Car haulers that can haul 7-8 cars at once. Again this is daily routine my buddy tells me.

I haven’t had a car payment in over 3 years and I’ve been debt-free for over 3 years. I have a legit amount of money saved as a result of my intentional actions. Debt-free since 8/15/16.

you do have a car payment. it is called auto insurance. it never ends. it's a money pit.
I’m a college student with no debt and a good amount of savings (my parents are very generous and are paying my state school tuition). I see my peers buying 15k cars while making $15 an hour part time thinking they can afford it because they are able to pay the down payment. Thank goodness I found Dave Ramsey before I almost made the same decision myself!

200,000-mile club where we at!?
On my way to the 300,000-mile club! Just about to turn 276K on my 2001 Mercedes E430. I paid $1,600 for it a little over two years and 40K miles ago and am loving it - repairs are manageable because I largely work on it myself.

I’m a 78 year old widow. I told my son that I would only be interested in a man who had a pickup, his own tools and could fix anything! He said I didn’t want a boyfriend, I wanted a handyman! I laughed and told him, exactly!

I always cringe when people post on social media " I worked so hard for this, I deserve this. I made it!" when they buy a new car from a dealer. They do not realize they just put themselves thousands in debt. They are so much worse off now than they were an hour ago before they bought that "God is so good" car.

Just started listening to Dave. I have a $173 car payment. My wife's car is paid off. My only other debt is my house, $2250 a month. Take home pay between me and my wife is $8000 to $9500 a month. We did the math and our total bills without including food is $3400. We have 3 months of emergency funds. Should I pay off the car now? I owe $8400..I just fianced it about a month ago. Wish I would of listened to Dave before I made that decision.
People think their income is their wealth. The more they make, the wealthier they think they are. I fell victim to that mentality when I was younger, too.
I LOVE how the youtube ads for most of Dave's shows are from car companies trying to "flease" or "Finance for 84 months!" The irony!
$18,500 for my escape at $273/month. Got about $9k left on it. Can't wait till it's paid off. Don't plan on ever buying another car.
Just found out today that all the hard work I've been putting in means I'll be paying off my car loan two years early. It has nearly 10% interest rate, so you know how bad things were for me a couple years ago. I'm also going to be completely debt free by Christmas.
My credit rating has been going up and up, but I don't care. I'm not going into debt again unless it's for a house. Even then, I'd like to put at least 50% down or I'm not doing it.

Look at older Buicks, grand marquis, Oldsmobile’s, etc. Often you can find them with 80k miles in great shape for just a few thousand bucks. A lot of older folks take really good care of them and you can get them for under 2k. It’s a great value! And they all ride like butter....

Good advice! Finally own 2 new vehicles. Most of my life drove uncle buck cars that smoked and burnt oil. People never like parking next to me or tailing me because of the smoke. Today debt free.

Bought mine for 2k at 138k miles. Just make sure they have a good reason for selling and ask many questions about it. Follow your gut.

Bought my 2001 Toyota Tundra for 3k with around 200k miles. Still runs like a dream.

Buy a used Toyota, pay it off in 2 or 3 years, drive it for 10. (They also are the brand that maintains it's value the most.)
They also have the cheapest repair parts.
This exactly what I'm doing. I have a five year toyota that I'm planning to drive for 10 years.
Smart Joe not the cheapest repairs by any means. But they are the most economical for the reason they rarely need a repair. And hold value. Parts can be pricey depending on year make and model

I bought cheap used cars for many years and would end up putting THOUSANDS of dollars in repairs. I got so tired of it. I got tired of being stuck on the side of the highway with a major mechanical problem. So this year I bit the bullet and financed a 2012 Honda Civic. It sucks having a payment, but I don't have to worry about being stuck on the side of the freeway anymore and I don't have to worry about my cheap Craigslist car overheating anymore.
I bought my reliable 07 Camry when I lived at home with my parents. Paid it off in less than 2 years ( paid 8k for it). I’ve had it for 5 years so far and I love it!

Mechanic here. You should be able to get over 300,000 miles out of that car with regular maintenance. Spend time on Toyota forums to learn about your machine because you don't need to be a mechanic to choose wisely!

Just purchased a "new car" it was a 2006 Honda Pilot with 160,000 for $5,500 we "upgraded" from our 09 Corolla :)

I work at an insurance agency and its crazy how many people lease & finance brand new cars and they dont even make 50k per year. While i make more snd live 5k cars that ate reliable.
I make $90K a year at the moment. The most expensive car I've ever owned is a $6K Ford Fusion that I picked up from a college kid who wanted to get a better car. Gets me from A to B just fine, handles really well and insurance is dirt cheap.
It’s been almost a year since I graduated from a university and have 0 debt and working as an intern to develop my career. It feels so good not to worry about anything. I’m 22 and drive a 1999 Ford Taurus, feels good 😎

I am learning about financial literacy by watching Dave and others! I never really knew about money and i am 52 years old! The last 4 years I have Been really locking into my finances! I have two sons 25 and 30 and I am always on them and sending them videos like this! The only thing is they really don’t get what I am trying to show they they just brush me off🤦🏿 I tell then you don’t want to be my age and be struggling

When we were paying off all of our debt I rear ended someone on the freeway. I totaled the car. Instead of going back in debt I bought a $1,400 corolla on Craigslist. It had 200,000 miles on it. It lasted the 8 months it took to pay off the remaining debt and never broke down the whole time. I sold it on Craigslist for what I paid for it. Once a car depreciates to a certain point it can’t go down any further.
And if your car survives and becomes old enough, it can actually appreciate in value. Datsun 120y anyone?!
Having been a millionaire and gone broke, I dug my way out by making a decision about looking good versus being good. Looking good is when your broke friends are impressed by what you drive, and being good is having more money than they have.
I don't know about you guys but being broke while working hard breaks my heart...
its sounds like you know what you have to do to make a change about that situation. when an individual notices those things in life its good cause he or she knows what needs to done to remedy the problem, good luck.
I know the feeling, you work your tail off just to pay 2/3rds of your money to debt and struggle to make it until your paid again to start the process over again, almost all my debt is paid back one thing I can say tho is I learned a very valuable lesson (or lessons) about money by getting into debt, what’s one lesson? Don’t get into debt again lol

Patience....what a concept. Everyone wants things now. Mr Ramsey teaches about being Disciplined and Patience. These are two things that adults should be better about, but many of us aren’t.

I don’t regret following Dave’s advice,Paying cash for my 2002 Toyota Tacoma, was a blessing ! No need to deal with interest payments, to deal with full coverage insurance, nothing of that sort !
My truck is a 1995 Nissan, 279,000 miles, 5 spd, crank windows, paid $1650. Drove it til a wheel fell off, put it back on, and it still goes. Will never part with it until the engine dies. No sign of that yet. My car is a 2012 Sonic with 40,000 miles. Has the 5-spd, crank windows and dents in the left side doors. But I paid $5000 cash and climbs mountain roads like a 4x4.
I have been driving 40+ years and admit to buying 3 new cars on loans. I drove them until they were dirt.
Without knowing you existed did most everything you speak of. I own 4 houses, debt free and am a mini multimillionaire (just under 5 million). I now own 4 new cars, and of course with cash.

I used to drive a Chevy Metro. I once had a woman ask me as I was driving her home after we had dinner say "when are you going to buy another car?" She continued "If we are going to continue to date I can't be seen in a Metro." I pulled over to the side of the road and told her to get out. End of story.

I drove a used rental car for a decade. Saved me a ton of money.
But not having to care if you get your car door dinged in the company parking lot is priceless.

I've bought old cars and when I sold them I never lost money.
Exactly get something dirty or with some small issues drive it for a year or two and invest in those fixes and sell it in better condition than you got it for the same price or slightly higher.

What if you were jobless and spent all your savings, but then got a new job with 60k salary that requires a car to get to?
Then you can definitely afford a car payment. Doesn’t mean you need an expensive car.
Saul Slendamann you and I know what Dave would say. Got a 60k job? Great! With that income you should make 900 a week after taxes, and take your first check and buy a 900 dollar Honda. So what if you got a 60k a year job? That means you go out and get a car payment? That's dumb.
@@SLENDAMANN That's quite a specific situation, and one that seems designed to find an exception to a good general principle. And it either means that you didn't have enough savings, or your job standards were too high. So, yeah, if you "find yourself" with zero dollars and no car and need a car to get to the job you just started, you might need to finance a thousand dollar car. But no one over the age of 21 should ever "find themselves" there, especially with these historically low unemployment rates.
@@SLENDAMANN if aliens came to earth and stole everyone's savings that would be another example where you could finance a car but in 90% of situations you shouldn't ever finance a car.
@@greenAbbot Maybe just graduating college? My class had average starting salary $65k but if people just barely made it out of college debt free they might need to borrow a bit for a reliable car.

Make 150k drive a Prius. Ten years from now I will be buying another Prius. Debt free 15 years!

Driving a 2009 Toyota. Spending about $2k in maintenance & inspections + tires every two years (about $85/month). The only additional service we've every needed was for a dead battery (my fault for not changing is sooner). The lack of a car payment was the start line for the debt free life that I'm living now!

Had the same car for 7 years, paid off my car loan in 13 months instead of 24. Best decision I ever made! Now I just gotta get everything else in line!
I had a car payment for one year when I was 23. After a year I woke up and realized my nice(ish) car was a huge waste of money, sold it, and bought a cheap reliable car with the difference. It’s been 8 years and I’ve never had a payment since, despite going through two cars. The key? Automatically set money aside every month into a separate car savings account. Some people say that’s the same as having a payment, but it’s not. For one, I’m not paying interest, I’m making a little. Second, if a financial challenge came up we could temporarily stop saving if we need that cash flow; with a payment you don’t have that option. And third, paying cash has forced us to live within our means. It’s the way to go. I’ll never have a car payment again.
Turn $30,000 into $10,000. That's a pretty lame magic trick.

Remember this people: Auto dealers make their money off getting you into debt for 36-60 months. Why do you think they always say "How much did you want to put down?"
Very true! That's why they always want to focus on the monthly payment as in " only $390.00 @ month".....they don't want you to realize the huge amount the TOTAL payments WITH interest will add up to!

I never understood the appeal of cars beyond transportation until my MX-5 soft top as a second car. It had been discounted because it sat on the lot for nearly a year. Paid cash for it. It was truly a fun driving experience. Then another driver rear-ended and totalled my main car and I bought a new V6 Rav4. That was 13 years ago. I’ve taken fab care of it, and used the original dealer (a great local business) for all servicing. What a reliable workhorse, still going strong. Looks almost brandnew on the outside. Its Blue Book value might be low now, but it’s priceless to me. Hope to get another 10 years at least out of it.
Thanks Dave! I have a 2004 Nissan Maxima that I'm going to drive it until the wheels fall off, then I'll buy some new wheels to put on it.
Watching this now that I paid off my 2016 Hyundai, I wish I were more financially literate at the time I bought this car in 2018. It's good on gas and it was $15k, so now my strategy is to maintain it as best I can and hopefully drive it to 200k miles. Next one will be a used 10 year old Toyota haha.

Most people think they need and deserve a nice car and most can’t afford it. That’s killing their finances. It’s also a big reason why cars are so expensive-artificial demand.
I did the sums... It's cheaper/more convenient for me to catch an uber/public transport.
After car registration costs+car insurance+annual fuel+the random traffic/parking fine you might get once/twice per year, plus actual parking expenses, plus the hassle of finding parking space at work/shopping centres.
