The charge is for writing off and falsifying those payments as something else entirely to formulate them as though they were legal expenses going somewhere else when they simply weren't, which is a federal crime. It's one of those white-collar, fraud-type crimes.

@@C.L.S_90 That in itself isn't what is illegal, Trump was indicted on 34 counts of falsifying business records, based on the fact that his reimbursement payments to Cohen were allegedly disguised as legal payments. As well as campaign finance violations for paying Daniels through Cohen to cover up the story. The Daniels payment was effectively a donation to Trump's campaign that exceeded the legal limit on political contributions.
Trump is a flight risk at this point.
