A young man raising his niece & nephew after a tragic accident gets a Secret Santa surprise

The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy helping a local Secret Santa give $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho this holiday season.
In July 2019, David Silva's mother passed away in an unexpected tragic accident. As a result, David took over guardianship of his then 8-year-old nephew and 12-year-old niece. Although this wasn't how David saw his future going, he never hesitated to work toward giving those kids the best life he could.
It's been four years and David is still putting in long hours at work to ensure his niece and nephew are able to take advantage of every opportunity presented to them. David takes extreme pride in watching his nephew compete in high level soccer games and has worked hard at helping his niece improve her grades - in fact, she currently has straight A's!
David is always willing to put his own wants and needs aside to care for these children. Because of him, they are living a life that would otherwise be impossible.
Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves if we could pay David a visit and surprise him with some early Christmas gifts. Check out the video above!

Before my nephew and nieces were born, I was all about them having name brand things. Toys, flashiness they wouldn’t even remember as babies. I always said I’d spoil them so much. Now? I just wanna make sure they have a nice winter coat. I’d rather buy them a nice winter coat, and a few cheap toys that they’ll be just as excited over. Or making sure they have quality clothes, over brand names because they can pass them down or donate them, whereas some name brand are..rather cheaply made. Your priorities definitely change when you have any sort of parental role over kids. You worry about if their mittens are warm enough, or if they’ve got enough food in the house. Priorities change. You wanna make them happy, sure, spoil them even. But needs comes first and you’re actually aware and able to see what the needs even are.

He had such a happy, positive smile, and as he opened his gifts, you could see some of his stress bleeding off of him.

His reaction is perfect. It's hard raising your own kids but to raise kids that aren't yours. This man is a special person.
He may not be the biological father, but I would imagine for him and the kids, they are family of the heart, and because of that these kids know they are loved and supported. To me, that’s the best kind of parenting you can give a kid.
It is his niece and nephew it is not like they aren't related. I'm sure he had a deep love for them before the accident.

He learned from his mother, who took these young children in. She was a beautiful mother who taught her son the value of people. Mom did a great job raising this young man.

Not only did he lose his sibling, the parents of the children, but hes taking on their grief too, going from a single man income to guardian of two cannot be easy. This made me tear up he seemed so grateful and deserving 🥹

I cried watching this. I do true crime for a living and as some of you may know that is a world of darkness. It's very hard to hang on to our hope in humanity when everyday we see how awful people can really be. I rarely ever get to report on any good news nor do I hear it that often. When I see things like this it automatically brings me to tears and restores my faith in humanity. Thank you all for doing this to make someone's life a bit brighter! This is amazing! I am a father of 2 and luckily have an amazing wife that we can share our parenting responsibilities. I can't imagine how difficult it is at times to be doing it by yourself. Those two kids will always look at you as their father and you are giving them THE most important thing you can give to a child..... Love and support and stability. Don't be discouraged on the tough days.... remember that it all ebbs and flows.... the good and the bad... the ups and the downs. I am really impressed by your actions and your courage. I hope you can still find some time for yourself to take a break. You're an awesome dude

David, you are a true hero. You yourself are a young man and to take on the responsibility of "dad" for your niece and nephew says a lot about how you were raised. You aren't just raising them you are finding the time to invest in their futures. Caring about their grades and extracurricular activities shows them you are interested in their hobbies. It is rough now but your hard work and sacrifices will be well worth it.

As a mom who raised four kids on my own, I can honestly say these gifts would mean the world when each day brings new needs and the money is already stretched. What a beautiful thing to do and what a beautiful young man who deserves this and so much more. I hope he continues to get the support and help as the children get older. I always like how they don't treat the people like a charity case but let the people know that they're loved and they're appreciated in the community. Just telling someone their good actions are seen will stay longer in someone than all the money will.
