    Hi Everyone, in this video a fellow UK astrophotographer Olly Barrett and I collect data on the Soul Nebula for a collaborative project. We manage to capture 42hrs 26 minutes of SHO data together using the 2600mm pro, the Askar FRA400 and the Skywatcher Esprit 100ED.
    We both edited the data separately and show two edits for you in the video, please let us know which edit you prefer. You can see more of Ollys images on Astrobin here: www.astrobin.c...

    Hi Russell - I know you're expecting a pick of one over the other; but sorry, I'm not going there... Because, I like them both too much!! It really is a great example of how Astrophotography represents a perfect blend of ART, technology and science! ...with special emphasis in yours and Olly's case, on the ART. Keep up the good work!!

      Thank you very much James, really appreciate it. yes, it really does highlight how the editing process plays such a big role in astrophotography. Thanks for watching

    Excellent images by both you and Olly. I'm with Joe... I like them both equally. The beauty of this hobby is that you can give the exact same data set to 5 different people, and you'll get 5 different results from it.

      Thanks Jonny...yes, it really is amazing how the same data produces different images. clear skies mate.

  • @WindyCityAstrophotography

    Great stuff as always, Russell! So tough to choose; I love the blue/gold in yours and the then I also love the green that was left in for Olly's!

    Both amazing images but I prefer your edit Russell. The colours are more striking and you managed to pull out and incredible amount of detail.

      Thanks Jon, I'm torn, I think I'm leaning towards Olly's edit. Thanks again for the comment, really appreciate it 👍

    Great job by both of you. I choose Ollys' because the blue is more transparent, letting me see thru into deeper space. Also, Ollys' has some green and more shadows in the denser clouds giving it more depth. Two thumbs up guy's!!!!!

      Thank you very much. I agree, I think Olly’s edit is better, love the blues in his image. Thank you for watching 👍

    Great capture both of you! I like both versions a lot. At first I thought I liked Russell's better, but then after looking a while longer at Olly's then I thought I preferred that one, but then at the end of the video looking at them both again, I decided I like them the same! 😜

    Nice collab guys Ollie's/Olly's and all variations are always good astrophotographers! I'll actually take the center of Ollys with the surrounds of your image Russell. It's nice to get so much data, makes editing so much easier in terms of signal at least.

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  Před 2 lety

    Great video Russell. I think it's almost impossible to pick a winner if I'm honest.....both are exceptional. I quite like the idea of a strategically placed diffraction spike especially if it covers a halo etc.

    42 hours is a nice haul. Hard to choose which is best. I think overall all I like your edit more but I like Ollys colors more. As you know.. I'm a fan of green in my SHO images. :)

      @RussellsAstrophotography  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks very much James, I do agree, I think the colors in Olly’s edit are better! I need to experiment more with leaving Green in my images. Thanks for watching

  • @starman3088
    @starman3088 Před 2 lety +1

    Hi Russell. Are you REALLY asking us to choose!!?? I have always said your images are just fabulous and on its own I would have said "WOW", but I think Olly's has the edge for me manly because he focused on the OIII more and brought out the blue/green which gives the image a kind of "coldness". The star spikes are also a nice touch. It just goes to show how processing can change things. Still, both are stunning images in their own right. Well done to both of you and will certainly check out Olly's astrobin.

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  Před 2 lety

      Haha,yes I am...I agree, I think Olly's edit was brilliant, he really brought the Oiii out in the image. I also like the star spikes, really adds some interest to the image. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video 👍

    Great stuff! Didn't realize you are in Cirencester, which I visited just before the pandemic. Great place. Many wonderful memories for me and I'm glad that you've provided a wonderful contemporary connection. One day I hope to able to produce my own images along your lines from Ottawa.

    Great collaboration Olly and Russell. Interesting to see two different edits of the same data. I like aspects of both images - I like the blue and the hints of green in Olly's but in your image Russell I like the fact that some of the outer aspects of the nebula are more visible and the image has a "softness" which I also personally really like. Would be interesting to see how you could combine aspects of both images (but don't ask me how 🙃). I also like diffraction spikes (none of my scopes produce them) and as Olly said, they can help with making some brighter stars look nicer. Great job both of you.

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  Před 2 lety

      Thanks very much Logan...haha yes, I am not sure how we would go about combining aspects of each edit. I am sure there is a way, but that is beyond my knowledge I am afraid. Yes I agree, I really like the defraction spikes, adds some interest to the image and can make the bright stars look good. Clear skies 👍

    Which image do I like better? Well, one thing I can say for sure is that I like 42 hours of integration time. The detail you both got out of a faint nebula is outstanding! As for which image - I like Olly's deep blue better. It's just not something I've seen much of in astoimages.

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  Před 2 lety +1

  • @robmailconway
    @robmailconway Před 2 lety +1

    I like them both for different reasons so i cant compare them. A quick question, when you take images over multiple nights do you take flat frames each night and then combine each nights images separately and then join all the nights together?

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you Rob, I usually only take one set of flats for each image. I do not remove or rotate the camera between imaging session, so the flats should work well for multiple nights. I know others will disagree with this approach, but it has always worked well for me. Thanks for watching

  • @astroheartuk4623

    • @RussellsAstrophotography
      @RussellsAstrophotography  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks mate, yes we did both combine all the data and then edited separately. We both stacked our 20 hours then I combined the two stacks in APP and Olly in PI.

    Cracking video Russell, 42 hrs wow! Great setup, if my Askar 400 ever turns up, that’ll be a great target for me😀Truthfully I really like your edit with the Hubble style colours, however, I too really like Ollie’s star diffraction spikes! When I first saw them, I thought, the esprit doesn’t do that! Then you explained 😀 Good work mate! Kept it up! On another note, what camera are you using for your videos? Cheers Russell
    Clear skies!
