The artist of our time. Everyone should watch There Will Be Blood, imho, it is his masterpiece so far. Punch-Drunk Love is unfortunately deeply underrated, deserves more attention, and should be seen.

I was blown away by this film, and especially the performances. PT Anderson's work, like it or not, is always thought-provoking, skillfully made, and original. This movie has stuck with me for days after watching it.
I really didn't care for the questions here, It feels less like a comfortable sit down interview and more like an interrogation filled with fake laughter and BS
This film is foundational for me, but when people say they hate it- that is also warranted! The film is upsetting - but you can't say it's not a masterpiece. It's perfect.
He dropped a huge bomb at 2:43 in, too bad he gets interrupted and never finishes his thought. I will take what he said as corroboration of what I think I know about this movie anyway and let it explain what I think a huge part of it is about
definitely seems like trauma, like family dysfunction and masculinity, is a throughline in much of his work. the idea of a post WW2 spiritual movement is so esoteric and fascinating. The movie always struck me as vaguely Eyes Wide Shut feeling.. Same feeling I got reading Pynchon's V... Turns out V was a huge inspiration on early drafts.. and of course PTA met Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut via Cruise. Then theres the weird shit with Vivian being estranged and joining scientology.
@@shumlina Idk man.. PTA strikes as someone who's seen some shit. Like a kubrick where they seem both young in spirit and aged as fuck by reality at the same time.
I like the way Anderson dances around Scientology, saying the film is "loosely" based on scientology when in actuality (if you know a good deal about scientology) its about L.Ron Hubbard and Scientology not just a little bit but exactly. Also Tom Cruise asked him to change the script and Anderson said no.
I absolutely loved this movie. After seeing some of the deleted scenes, I think that if more of those were put into the final cut, it may have won over some of those critics and people who didn't get it.
Like all art, people are going to get different interpretations and understandings of the meaning behind this film. As for me, it's about how we all have these friendships in which one friend dominates the relationship and almost manipulates you. What keeps you coming back is the fact that despite it all, you find solace and comfort in the person. Think about it. Do you guys have friends or companions that you are drawn to although there is some dysfunction between you two?
EXACTLY! With all PTA movies, the focus is always on the characters and examining their lives rather than any perceived plot. That doesn't mean there isn't a plot 'cause there is but that's never at the forefront. To ask "What the plotline is?" is to not see the point and beauty of his films..
To me, the film touches on a lot of themes (finding the courage to improve one's self, the shackles of society, taking control of one's freedom as a human being etc.) and it's not done in such a way as to explicitly hammer the audience with them. The title of the film itself kind of applies to any of the three leads when you think about it. It's so subtle and has so many little nuances like that which is regretfully what the detractors seem to miss imo.
Fair enough. I can attest to feeling the same way after I first watched it and wasn't sure what to make of it and it wasn't until I thought about it more that I begun to understand. After watching it a second time, everything kinda came full circle and it's now my favorite film of his. It's the kind of film that needs at least a couple of viewings to be fully appreciated I think..
This is an incredible interview and an incredible time capsule for so many reasons. First of all, PTA is a genius. His movie is great. The subject of the film is fascinating. It's a great interview. A woman gushes over Harvey Weinstein. Charlie Rose was also taken down by MeToo. Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead now. But most of all the entire notion of, "Could you answer this in 15 seconds?" is dead. Joe Rogan killed it.
Great to see that he says that it's not about bashing scientology, he said that is not more weird than anything else out there, helps some people and the film is about existence and human, not about criticising comething for the sake of it. The fear of the unknowkn.
This is why I have to agree with Kubrick when he talked openly about not discussing the inner workings of characters and the movies message to people like talk shows hosts, critics, etc. The movie should speak for itself, anything else is just a pathetic plea for people to understand why you made it, the movie should say that on its own.
Not sure about the eye changer thing. I think he just wanted to generate the hypnotic mood of processing. Another example is when Freddie's watching Casper in the theatre at the end. The reason Casper is used is kind of an allegory to how people were talking about ghosts and past lives in the wake of WWII. I completely understand the issues you have with the movie. We'll just have to agree to disagree. To each his own...
Hopefully Charlie Rose will do a proper 30min or 1hour interview with PT Anderson. Those 4-5min interviews are just teasers and can't go in-depth at all.
The way it is loosely based on the upbringing of something large is just like There Will Be Blood. TWBB was based upon upon the boom of the oil industry, but more focused of what became of it for a certain person.
Have you ever seen synecdoche, ny? the master is fine but unless youve been through scientology or some similar cult im not sure it has the same universal resonance as something like synecdoche or magnolia even.
After all things, the movie is a complete study of characters after the second world war. And is full of symbolism also. It's is strangely captivating.
at times i dont like pta's movies and i can see why people would feel put off because there is no real resolution of the film and its characters but i feel the same - the whole thing was an almost captivating dream.
Charlie Rose is a good interviewer but CBS Morning is not the place to sit down and talk. Get him on Rose's show and have a real discussion, don't sit there and give him 20 seconds to half-answer 70 random half-assed questions.
Anderson is more suited to long form interviews, like Rose's old show. These 5 minute fluff "interviews" from multiple hosts on morning news-ertainment shows are always dogshit.
This is a genius! I have seen all 6 of his movies and just read inherent vice, he is the second greatest director of his generation, sorry pt but arnofsky has still got you
Well I'll tell you Freddy, aronofsky has touched me in a way very few directors has, he has the ability to make me cry and feel fear for a character, he grips me like no other director. He is the only director to have two movies in my top ten, the fountain at number 4, and black swan at number 6. I am only 15 and the day I saw the fountain, is the day that I decided I wanted to make films. I wanted to have the ability to touch people the way he touched me and to tell intriguing stories with so many underlying themes, it reminds me of kubrick. I have since started four screenplays and began to save money to some day make films because of him. Now he is not my only influence, PTA also had an influence on me with magnolia, and the movies her and babel also prompted me towards this path.
Aronofsky has made me feel something and have a connection to the film in all his movies, here is my order of his movies 6 the wrestler 5 noah, 4 pi, 3 requiem for a dream, 2 black swan, 1 the fountain
As much as i loved Aronofsky's works, RFAD, Pi, Black Swan, but he's nowhere on the level of Paul Thomas Anderson. Aronofsky's a 8/10 where's Anderson is a 9 or a 10. Even leagues ahead of Tarrintino.
People keep missing the point. Scientology does really have anything to do with the brunt of the film. By constantly asking the question more people are going to think it does. Scientology is part of the setting, a rut for the characters to sink into. It helps shape the problems that they have and accentuate important characterization. The real story is the interaction between two misunderstood men. If more people focused on that they'd realize what a beautiful and striking, personal film it is
I think Rose has talked with PTA a number of times about Altman's influence on and mentorship of PTA early in his career. I agree that it was kind of weird how it was just tossed in like a throwaway but from what I can tell, Rose has a lot of respect for Altman's work and knows PTA does too.

Yeah he's the Kubrick of his generation. Can't wait to see what's next for him.
Coen brothers are the Kubrick of this generation
It is because of Adam Sandler. The audience that PTA goes for don't see Adam Sandler as a respectable actor
For me his masterpiece is The Master.
There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights and The Master are all incredible films. But yes, I think TWBB is the best film of the 21st Century so far.
"Scientology has helped a lot of people." Translation: I am very, very afraid.
You need help!

That Harvey Weinstein praise is a bit cringe-inducing now, isn't it?
