      definitely seems like trauma, like family dysfunction and masculinity, is a throughline in much of his work. the idea of a post WW2 spiritual movement is so esoteric and fascinating.
      The movie always struck me as vaguely Eyes Wide Shut feeling.. Same feeling I got reading Pynchon's V...
      Turns out V was a huge inspiration on early drafts.. and of course PTA met Kubrick on Eyes Wide Shut via Cruise. Then theres the weird shit with Vivian being estranged and joining scientology.

    Like all art, people are going to get different interpretations and understandings of the meaning behind this film. As for me, it's about how we all have these friendships in which one friend dominates the relationship and almost manipulates you. What keeps you coming back is the fact that despite it all, you find solace and comfort in the person. Think about it. Do you guys have friends or companions that you are drawn to although there is some dysfunction between you two?

  • @rooneymu8
    @rooneymu8 Před 11 lety +1

    EXACTLY! With all PTA movies, the focus is always on the characters and examining their lives rather than any perceived plot. That doesn't mean there isn't a plot 'cause there is but that's never at the forefront. To ask "What the plotline is?" is to not see the point and beauty of his films..

  • @rooneymu8
    @rooneymu8 Před 11 lety +1

    To me, the film touches on a lot of themes (finding the courage to improve one's self, the shackles of society, taking control of one's freedom as a human being etc.) and it's not done in such a way as to explicitly hammer the audience with them. The title of the film itself kind of applies to any of the three leads when you think about it. It's so subtle and has so many little nuances like that which is regretfully what the detractors seem to miss imo.

It's a great interview. A woman gushes over Harvey Weinstein. Charlie Rose was also taken down by MeToo. Philip Seymour Hoffman is dead now. But most of all the entire notion of, "Could you answer this in 15 seconds?" is dead. Joe Rogan killed it.

The reason Casper is used is kind of an allegory to how people were talking about ghosts and past lives in the wake of WWII.

He is the only director to have two movies in my top ten, the fountain at number 4, and black swan at number 6. I am only 15 and the day I saw the fountain, is the day that I decided I wanted to make films. I wanted to have the ability to touch people the way he touched me and to tell intriguing stories with so many underlying themes, it reminds me of kubrick. I have since started four screenplays and began to save money to some day make films because of him. People keep missing the point. Scientology does really have anything to do with the brunt of the film. By constantly asking the question more people are going to think it does.
    Scientology is part of the setting, a rut for the characters to sink into. It helps shape the problems that they have and accentuate important characterization.
    The real story is the interaction between two misunderstood men. If more people focused on that they'd realize what a beautiful and striking, personal film it is

    I'd love to see a proper sitdown with Charlie Rose about thiis film. Reallly just cause he's done with every other film since Boogie Nights really. Mad seeing PTA in that first interview about Boogie Nights compared to this one.

    I got al that actually, obviously it's a metaphor for scientology it's just like when does ambiguous stop being brilliant and start being lazy and vague. I think my biggest problem was the real lack of story progression though. I just read somewhere that PT came up with Amy Adams eye changer on the spot during filming, which says to me it has no double meaning, it's just there because he thought it was a good idea. a lot of the movie feels that way, but I still liked amazing acting

    I got the sense that PTA is a little remorseful that he put some art out there that not only had a "meh" impact but ruffled a lot of feathers in H'wood. Said simply, the risk wasn't worth the reward.

    You seem to imply PTA passes judgement on The Cause in the film but shifts perspective here. I dont agree. What he does so masterfully in his films is show man for what he really is; complex, neither all good nor all bad; challenging us to look deeper. Rather than condeming he lets us decide. The Cause is not shown without its merits, clearly "it works" for its devotees in many parts of the film. For me his answer here is consistent with his work. Diplomatic it may be but its also sincere.

    the film is about religion or apparent religion trying to tame man and that its a hopeless purpose because man is wild and a slave to his vices and desires , well that's my take on it anyway , however u see it it s a masterpiece .
