This video helped me out quite a bit. I’m working on correcting quite a few of these mistakes. Of the mistakes you mentioned, staying too upright and keeping the arm extended at the top of the swing seem to be the ones I struggle with most.
What I would love to see is a series of videos that breaks down the entire 2 handed style from proper setup, approach, swing, and then all the little nuances like keeping the arm tucked in. There’s a good amount of videos on two handed bowling, but I feel like there’s a lot of information missing. Why does Jason Belmonte and other two handers have a lot of reverse pitch in their finger grips? The best way to change our axis rotation. No thumb drilling layouts (usbc rule change).
If Jason Belmonte did an instructional video with you on the 2 handed style like so many pros have done in the past, I would purchase it in a heartbeat. I’ve watched all the amateur and semi pro two handed videos and even read Joe Slowinski’s articles, but a two handed video like the one norm duke made would be amazing.

100% I'm tired of seeing these two handed bowling tip videos be super short and without much as far as examples go.
I want to see a 10+ minute video that breaks down all the DO'S and DO NOTS! With examples for both each time they
have more information to talk about. I've actually found that I learn way more and even faster by watching all the best
2H bowling pro's play their matches etc. There's also some very helpful super slow motion videos you can watch of the
best 2H bowlers in the world. It'll show you in slow motion their approach, their backswing, their release, their footwork,
their angles etc. Watch those and then compare your own style afterwards and make adjustments. Aside from that of
course the rest is all just practice, practice, practice!

Practice makes perfect. Think less and have fun. Take time and use natural fluid motion. Speed, speed, speed. I have found that if you use an older ball with more use some revs get taken off and less splits and junk. I might get 600-800 revs. Not sure. If you gave me a new ball right now I would hook it off the lane. Best success is old urethane around 1st arrow, 5 board or 1,2,3,4 right on gutter, small easygoing angle, fluid motion follow through. I know what I am talking about because I have 3 300 league games, 1 league 800, tons of 700s, 299, everything. 215 average. Working on next 800 and next 300 and then 900.

I'm a fellow 2 handed bowler myself for the past 4 years. And I still use my one handed release to hit my spares.
I think one key thing when studying your own side view videos is to pay attention to the timing of the last step. Especially when the slide stops in relation to where the ball positioned at that point in the swing.
In the video at 2:34, if you freeze the video at this exact timing. Our fellow 2 handed youth bowler here has what we call the perfect "delayed timing". Which is having the ball positioned around the thigh of his non sliding leg, when his left feet has stopped sliding. This last step timing gives him a large flat spot to impart revs on to the ball, and also gives him great balance. If you picture his center of gravity at frame 2:34, the CG of his whole body and his ball together should be somewhere right in the middle of his body frame.
You can try to compare videos of all good one handed or two handed power bowlers online, most of them have different timings, but the last step timing all looks very similar to our friend at 2:34. Which is called "delayed timing" at the last step. If the ball is still higher up in his swing at this timing, its usually called "late timing" which causes imbalance at the foul line, inconsistency and lack of accuracy at release. If the ball is exactly at his left foot during this timing, we call this "traditional timing". Which is fine for accuracy and balance, but does not give the bowler a good flat spot to impart power and revs on to the bowling ball.
This is why "traditional timing" is often seen during the olden days and for one handed female bowlers. Where they do not need that much power but lots of accuracy as they play close to the right gutter most of the time.
Sorry for the long winded rant, but in summary:
    1) look to have "delayed timing" at your last step when you have stopped sliding
    2) Try to avoid "late timing" as it spells trouble for any bowler
    3) "Traditional timing" is fine but "Delayed timing" is what power bowlers like 2 handers aim for.
Edit: Just realised my rant is basically what Coach Arthur just covered in his earlier video here :D

Paused the video at 0:17 to say this is what I've been needing out of a bowling video!
Just recently transitioned from a life long conventional grip (thumb in ball) right handed bowler
into a 2H bowler. Was able to get my 2H average right on par with my usual style of bowling and
it only took me a couple months to do it. I finally went all in a week ago and had all my balls thumbs
plugged and the layouts set for my 2 handed pap. My biggest issue thus far is balance at the line
as well as my ball speed. Ball speed is even more important right now for me. It seems as though
I tend to throw strikes more often when I'm not as balanced at the line. Weird? Yeah I know!
But one thing that happens alot is my balls snapping to the Brooklynn side of the pocket. That
of course is because my balls speed isn't where it needs to be. I'm averaging about 13.5 to 14 MPH
as a two handed bowler. And that's down 4 MPH from my standard (thumb in ball) style I've had
my entire career as a bowler. Ball speed first, balance at the line second. Also.. going down a ball
doesn't seem to help that much with keeping my ball on the right side of the pocket. Even my
Pitch Black Urethane ball now hooks even more than my Hammer Gauntlet Asymmetrical ball
ever did prior to switching my bowling style. My rev rate has easily DOUBLED since I transitioned
    to a 2H bowler.

I have a similar issue, or I bonk the headpin leading to bad results. Watching them throw the ball, I realized that I'm nowhere near to the left side as they are, I have a hunch that I may be too inside, leading to the angle being poor. My theory is that by widening the angle, maybe the ball gets further to the right before beginning its hook.

This video is extremely helpful for exactly what I'm doing. I'm a conventional style bowler with about a 300 rev rate. I've won a total of 4 tournaments and I have 13 sanction 300 games with 3 sanction 800 series. During the lockdown I started practicing the two handed style now for about 9 months. The problem I was running into is I was trying to have the same approach with the two handed game as my conventional game. You are spot on with this as it doesn't work. I recently changed my approach with my two handed game and it made a huge difference.

I only bowled for two years in my early 30’s, so I’m still a novice at this and even though I’m improving, I’m wondering if changing from a single hand throw to the two handed bowling style, would help me improve even more. My current best game was a 252 and best series in league, was 230, 232, & 229, for a 691 total. Both of those happened within the last couple weeks, right after I got my new ball, a Harsh Reality 14lb, with finger tip grip. My league averages in the three nights I am bowling now are 161, 165, & 187 (I bowled too good the first night of the 3rd league). I’ve been watching tons of videos lately, trying to learn how to get more hook and rotations, but seem to be going backwards.

I'm back after previously commenting on this video 8 months ago to say that I basically gave up on 2H bowling.
When the lanes are freshly oiled I'm able to bowl really well two handed. As soon as the pattern starts to break
down I can't stop my ball from overly hooking and either nose diving into the head pin (leaving split after split..)
OR.. hitting the Brooklyn side of the pocket. I was finally able to work out my balance at the foul line throwing
the ball two handed, but was never able to achieve the speed that's necessary to counter my very high rev rate
as a 2 handed bowler. I just couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get my ball speed up. If I could average
16-18 mph two handed instead of the low 13-15 mph then I probably would've never gone back to my typical
thumb in ball style one handed bowling. It was fun while it lasted (aside from all the splits..) but I gave up lol

First thing I will say is that if you are going to become a thumbless 2-hander is that you need to involve your pro shop with your grip because it impacts how you release the ball and can cause all sorts of issues. Using a currently drilled 1-hander setup with a thumb in will almost certainly cause a myriad of release problems for thumbless 2-handers. Most 2-handers have reverse pitch in their fingers in order to necessitate a proper release. This is specific to each bowler's comfort level, but having forward pitch is almost certainly going to cause problems with being able to comfortably put the ball down and develop a consistent, clean release.

Besides the obvious missing thumb hole, how different are the ball layouts between on and two handed bowlers? Are the to finger holes in relatively similar position related to the pin and PAP as they are on a ball for a one handed bowler? Reason I ask is, I am a one hander that has a horribly low rev rate, but when practicing two hands I can DRAMATICALLY increase my rev and hook without really losing too much ball speed, but I do wonder if my one handed drilled balls are correctly on axis being that my entire roll is different when using two hands

I would say keeping on the inside of the ball, and also moving your hand further to the side of your ring finger is the key to removing negative axis tilt, not a late release. If you release it too soon you will not be consistent, how ever if you keep your hand on the inside of the ball, and rotate around the back of the ball instead of the side, you can release it 4 feet off the ground and still have good axis tilt. I am a two hander. I have a bizarre style with 6 steps. My two big tips are ball speed must be high with revs, and try the approach where you start like statue and then when you begin walk to lane imagine being a falling statue to naturally fall into approach and generate that speed of course.

I’m in the process of converting to 2 hands. However my 1 handed strike ball is 15 lbs and I find myself struggling getting ball speed. I had a play with some lighter 12 lbs house balls and found the technique a lot more smoother. Is worth considering getting a lighter ball or just work on technique with my current ball? I also found that inserting my fingers in the ball deeper helped a lot.

I haven't heard anyone mention when switching to 2 hands, you don't slide to the line with square shoulders as in the conventional 1 hand swing. But you're on a slight angle as you slide to the line, and you're using a new set of muscles in the glutes above your slide leg. Takes a little time to strengthen those muscles to put some power in your swing.

Solid video. The main issue I see with new 2 handed bowlers is the inability to generate enough ball speed. Any suggestions?

    • @OrigamiBrandon
      @OrigamiBrandon Před 5 lety +4

Most of the time it's simply due to bowlers being unable to utilise their body movements to match their approach, or simply put its not a fluid motion. Starting off with footwork, it is very very different from one hand approach, so considering you don't get much energy from your arms alone, you need to be able to speed up your footwork, creating a skip step. Next would be bending your body forward more, so your already low drawback isn't any closer to a non-existent drawback. Be careful of your arms kicking out, try to keep them closer to you. Last but not least would be the ability to release the ball on time. Most common mistake I've seen one handed bowlers converting to 2 hands is their inability to create the space for their swing due to their body not being able to bend enough, so if they could fix that they're probably going to be a step closer. I'm no coach or a PBA bowler but as a 2 handed myself, I hope this helps. Correct me if anyone might have seen some mistakes I might have included.

Hey Arthur! I switched to 2 handed using mg pinky and ring finger due to an injured middle finger... When i started I was 8 160 and now a season in I'm back to 200... My biggest issue at first was ball speed but that went from 14 to 17.5 as the season progressed... The biggest thing I did was foxus more on staying behind the ball... I find most people, whrn switching, end up focusing too much and rev and hook and end up using the power generated to simply rip the cover off of the ball and xome either around or over the top... I focus on staying behind the ball and allowing nature to create mu revs (still super high even for 2 handers). So my question is, would telling people to stay behind the ball to generate speed be a good rule of thumb to help others or was it simply a personal thing that onlt helped me! And whatever the andwer is I would love to hesr your take!!

There are several good bowlers and watching them should give you an idea of what to do correctly to get the power and speed you want. If you want an even better comparison between your style and theirs, try recording yourself from a side angle and then comparing them side-by-side to a pro 2-hander. Bowling two handed can be more physically taxing, since you’re generating more RPMs and you need a lot more speed to match. So that extra physicality is something to keep in mind. Age is less a factor than whether or not you can get you body into the right positions

2 hands to generate rpm? I just have one thing to say about that. If ej can keep up with the best 2 handers with 1 hand so can you. It's all about learning that yo-yo effect and learning that your legs generate most of your power. 2 handers are not superior by any means. Walter ray won all of his titles with one hand and hes crowned in my eyes as the greatest bowler to ever live at this point in time. Sure belmos the best right now but that usually doesnt last long

My approach sucks apparently. The only reason my swing directions is that way is because of the house ball doesn’t hook as well so I do it to compensate but that’s an adjustment not my actual style so I won’t count that. Just a real shit approach
