    I realize this video is 4 yrs old but I'm at 8400 ft in Colorado, 5 months a yr. I put a new carb on my polaris 500 but it wouldn't work properly, then I saw you adjust for altitude. I did the same, worked like a charm. Thank you.

    Thanks for posting this. Went to take my 500 HO out only to realize that gas was shooting out of the air filter. Had the same problem with that same screw and the only thing that could get it off was vice grips.

    For that way over tight screw…. Use a Dremel with a flat cutting dish and cut a straight line so a standard screwdriver can be used. It’s way easier than fighting with vice grips.

    Thanks I really needed to see this video I have a 2010 polaris sportsman 500 H.O. that I have been having problems with it running lean and acting like it runs out of fuel or just shutting down every now and again changed the fuel pump 2x,carburetor 2x,rebuilt the orginal carb with oem parts and still had the same problem before finally reading that if the air filter has been changed to aftermarket that it needs ti be rejetted, the bike only has 1200 mikes on it and in really good condition and I have been wanting to ride it for months now but couldn't figure out why it was running like it was .Anyways tomorrow my new jet kit will be in and I am going to tear into it once again also I have found the cover over the screw and plan to remove it and clean and reajust it to the 2 turns like you suggested see how it runs after all this hopefully it will be the last time I have to work on it for awhile. Thanks for the video and it will come in handy for the work I have to do and I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future.

      I had the problem with Shutting down when my 2011 was new , Found out that when Turning the KEYCHAIN the dealer installed on the key was just getting Caught LOL! and would turn it off.
      Jetting being off just a little should never cause her to just "die" I would also recommend make sure the Tank vent lines are not pinched off. Or just open your fuel cap when driving to see if you hear pressure or Suction.

    I just removed the carb off my dad's 2012 Sportsman 500 HO for a good cleaning plus I'm trying to fix his hard starting issue when it's cold. Not cold as in the weather but when it sits overnight or roughly 8-10 hours. Well inside the throttle plate area it was bone dry, no dirt or grime what so ever. His machine has around 3,500 miles and the trails we ride can go from really dusty if it doesn't rain to really muddy with deep water crossings if it does rain. Lots of fun either way. He really never rides in the front of the pack so he gets the brunt of the dust.
    So that being said I think you probably should've replaced that oring for the throttle plate cover. Don't want to get that so full of crap it rusts it shut or enough to where your throttle cable snaps. I recall you stating your throttle cable started to feel a little tight which means it's getting enough crap inside there to cause a issue.
    I haven't played with a newer Mikuni carbs, mostly Keihin carbs but man are these carbs cheaply made. It's like nothing but plastic inside them. The slide, where the slide rides in the carb and even the main needle. WTF??? Seeing the parts inside I'm not to feeling these carbs. The Keihin on my Arctic Cat has no plastic and the original needle was aluminum but my DynoJet kit came with a titanium to lighten it up even more then it was. I can see over time the plastic parts inside the Mikuni breaking down and disintegrating. Wonder if any companies make metal replacement parts. I think the DynoJet kits for the Sportsman come with a titanium needle. I'll maybe talk him into a jet kit to get rid of the factory plastic needle.

    That's hose on the bottom of the carb is essential if you ride in water. It has a one way valve inline so water doesn't get inside your carb fuel bowl.

    Cool video bro. I just rejetted my yamaha big bear 350 and found my Main jets and Pilots jets at "Jets R Us". They had a larger selection compared to the other ATV parts stores i visited online. I like to order several so i can dial in the carb just right. I had to rejet after I installed snorkel intake and added a DG slip on exhaust. Quad sounds killer now, but won't stay at idle. It will idle when I first start quad, but will eventually slow the rpms lower and lower and then stop running. 1/4 to WOT it runs great. I guess I still need to rejet my Pilot Jet for idle, right? I also have a 500 polaris sportsman which I installed a snorkel for airbox and cvt and surprisingly didn't have to rejet,

    Ok, iM pretty sire this video helped because my polaris was having really cold starts and bad idles untils its warm, so when I adjusted the screw under the plug I got mini backfires, and then after a while they were going away, is this normal? Think the motor just needs to get used to it.

  • @spooln30
    @spooln30 Před 9 lety

    Oh yeah the PMS or Idle Air screw seemed like it was fully bottomed out or turned all the way in. I tried to tighten it up to check how many turns out it was set from the factory but it didnt want to go any further in. There was a good amount of the needles tip sticking out into the throttles bore. I have to look at my FSM to check how many turns out it should've been from the factory then adjust it from there to hit a sweet spot. I think the hard starting was caused by the PMS not being turned out at all. Weird, I would think from how much this pigs vibrate the PMS would want to unscrew not tighten. Lol.
    I ordered a PMS screw for my Arctic Cat from a Harley Davidson carb parts website a few days ago. It's threaded longer then the stock screw because it has a knob on the end for very easy adjustments. So instead of having to loosen the carbs clamps enough so you can tilt it to make adjustments. This way you can leave the carb all nice and tight then just turn the knob to make changes. Gonna look and see if one is available for the Mikuni carbs. Sorry for going on. Lol. Good video Btw.

    I have done all mods you have shown. Air box, exhaust and jets exactly as you did. Machine starts, runs and sounds awesome. My questions. 1. How rich is to too rich? It will not start on its own. Just a slight bump of throttle. My elevation is just over 1000ft so 2 full turns on idle air. 2. How can I set idle with no tach? Maybe by just listening?
    Thx

    When those screws are tight like that sometimes the easiest way is to use a small sharp flat chisel on the edge and carefully tap it Loose with a hammer once the screw is out you can put it in a vise and hacksaw a flat in it or use a cutting wheel and cut a flat Groove across it so you can reinstall it with a flat blade screwdriver just throwing out my 50 years experience for people I don't even know why I was watching this video I was just bored for the moment I guess I was actually looking for a carb

      your atv is fuel injected it doesn't have a carb its got a thorttle body you might be able to adjust the idle on the throttle cable. one adjuster will be at the top of handle bar near thumb throttle and another will be half way down cable.
