    Uni Air Filters are the only way to go. Even thought both the Uni and K&N filters both require an oil the K&N is a paper type element and they seem to get dirtier quicker then foam filters. Nice video! Gonna take a look at my father's 2012 Sportsman 500 to see if his air box lid has the same restriction. His lid does look different then the 2011s in this video.

    Good video! Thinking about doing this to mine. When I have the air-box lid on it now the motor bogs way down and runs super rich, not getting nearly enough air, almost as if there is a clog in the pipe but there isn't one.. When i remove the air box lid it runs like a champ, it is just really noisy.

    i would, for sure... just be very sure about telling the viewers to re-jet. Another way to go, is to give the size of the new jet that you will use...
    take care

    I can't believe how much crap and pine needles gets stuck up in your air box. I don't think I've ever found anything but dust in mine.

    What size of jet would you use after doing the exhaust mod?

    I was in the Black Hills with my 02 500 HO and It had no power. It started acting up at home which leads me to believe something wrong was going on mechanically. I took it to the Polaris dealer in Belle Fourche SD who first thought worn camshaft but changed his tune and said it was my clutch advancing to full speed too early after driving it for awhile he asked if he could do a modification to the airbox to fix the problem. He drilled two 1.25" holes side by side in the air snorkel on the underside next to the air box cover and it was a totally different machine. Where I thought I was not getting enough fuel here I was not getting enough air at 6000 ft. I did ask him about my clutch and he said nope it was not getting enough air. I will have to check the space you are talking about. Is it possible you might introduce too much air into this setup?

    you seem very knowledgable on polaris atvs, i have a 2006 polaris sportsman 500 ho completely stock, it idles fine but when u give it gas it bogs and wants to die but if u give it full throttle it will run okay, it has a new air filter, new fuel filter and new plug in it so those cannot be the problem, any suggestions?

    If you ditched that whole lid with that restricted intake tube seems like you'd gain a bunch of performance. As long as you were not running in deep water/mud.

    • @kx519
      @kx519 Před 10 lety +2

      Actually, these quads like to have plenty of vacuum pre carb. If you remove it or make it larger you HAVE to re jet.

    • @htcooley04
      @htcooley04 Před 7 lety

      kx519 correct me if I'm wrong but I believe engines like some plenum volume depending on the type of engine and its application

    • @kx519
      @kx519 Před 7 lety

      Plenum volume being after the throttle blade? If so then yes, intake volume and runner length can do a lot to help performance, but that would all be after the throttle blade, and usually on bigger, multi cylinder engines. Messing with anything before the carb on a small engine drastically changes the effectiveness of the venturi and changes the air/fuel ratio. Luckily it isnt hard to re jet for the increased air flow potential by reading the plug.

    nice video. I have a yamaha dt 200r 1985 dirt bike. it was parked up for about 3 years.i have a problem where the bike would run perfect without air breeder.as soon as I put the air breeder cover it have no acceleration.
    can this be an air box problem or carburetor?

  • @Hammerback0
    @Hammerback0 Před 6 dny

    Its a 2011? And its carburated? Thats kinda odd, as 2006 was the first year of fuel injection on the sportsmans. Unless the fuel injection system involves a carb

    • @starpuss
      @starpuss  Před 5 dny

      EFI Was an "upgrade" / Option.
      I did not want to pay the extra $850 for that upgrade at the time.

    Ive got a 2013 white 500 HO and want a little more growl out of it. If i were to drill 1/4 inch holes not in the bigger part but the smaller pipe that comes down and curves (the one thats about a inch or so in diameter) Would it make it easier for water to get in?

      Hunter Wroten those are dogs they need something done and I think it would wake them right up. I test drove 2012 800 Sportsman it had 700 miles I believe maybe 600. it was a no power steering model that's why I'm not sure on the year but compared to the 2017 that I test drove literally 15 seconds later it's a world of difference that 570 with 1 mile on it felt like it was way snappier it even felt faster all the way to 40 miles per hour or 45 miles per hour that's all the faster I have room to go so I don't know about past that but I went with a brand new 2017 570 and so far with only 10 hours on it I do not regret it and it was a plain Jane model only option was fancy Wheels and power steering. just my two cents. if you're not sure how to get a little more power out of that 800 and you're not text savvy try getting ahold of Lake Mills Motorsports in Iowa. ask for Matt lewerke otherwise just go on the forms and on CZcams obviously good luck brother
