Sure, they carried guns and they fought, but in reality, most were not soldiers. They were farmers, ranchers, fur traders, sailors, preachers, clergy, trappers, shopkeepers, barkeeps... There was no unified national army that trained soldiers. Think about the folks drafted for Vietnam. Even as late as the 1970's, they were not soldiers. They had other professions and were picked to fight and die as needed.
Fun Fact: The war in Iraq and Afghanistan was the 1st all-volunteer force for the U.S.

Geography changes with history, not that this applies to these kids being asked about current geography. Names of changing countries, continental shifts, territories etc would be a part of history.

School was never my forte : fact is I was an F student for years BUT I traveled a lot with my folks and I have a natural curiosity for many, things, countries and languages. I'm now proud of the results in geography and I can speak 5 languages fluently. In other words schools and education are not always to blame for one's ignorance in many subjects : one needs to have the WILL TO LEARN.

We’ve all had to go through 5-7 pages of less-than-impartial coverage in order to get to the particulars of something a time or two.
